Mass Effect Alt. Ending - Until The End

I haven’t done a complex edit like this in a while, let alone a whole set. It was an idea I had when I recently played through ME3 again, and wished there was a better conclusion to the romance plot. So here you go, whether you thought you needed it or not. I know I did.

The idea is that when Shepard (female in this case) sends her injured squad-mates back to the Normandy, runs for the beam up to the Citadel and then gets hit by the Reaper laser, the love interest (if they were present, and the interest is Garrus in this case) sprints back out of the Normandy and towards the beam, despite his injuries. Shepard makes it to the beam and is brought up to the Citadel, with Garrus likely following behind.

Once Shepard is in the Citadel, the normal confrontation with the Illusive Man will occur, with him controlling both Shepard and Anderson’s movements. Shepard will inevitably shoot Anderson, but instead of just staying there, Anderson falls dramatically of the edge of the platform. After the usual conversation between Shepard and the Illusive Man about controlling the Reapers and progressing humanity and all that, the Illusive Man tries to make Shepard shoot herself, but before he could, a renegade interrupt becomes available, and if it’s taken, rather than Shepard breaking free and shooting the Illusive Man, it’s revealed that Garrus had snuck up and shot him instead.

As the Illusive Man falls dead, the Crucible attaches to the Citadel and Shepard falls to the floor, critically injured from the Reaper and the trip up the Citadel beam. As she sits up to watch the Citadel arms open, Garrus crawls up and sits next to her, also critically injured from before. A similar conversation to that between Shepard and Anderson in the original ending starts. The conversation will vary depending on the love interest, but they mainly talk about how proud they are of each other and how they finally managed to beat the Reapers. Garrus thinks they’ll die there, but Shepard may remain hopeful that they’ll make it out, only to pass out and pass away right there. Garrus calls Shepard’s name, trying to get her to wake up. He’s visibly upset and tries to aid her, but he finds it hard to move because of his injuries. 

The usual scene then proceeds, but with Garrus taking Shepard’s place in trying to help activate the Crucible, but then passing out and waking up in front of the Catalyst. The edit shows the child as the catalyst, but I thought it could take the form of Shepard, while still saying the same dialogue. It’s then fully revealed that the player controls Garrus, as he’s continuing on from where Shepard can no longer. He is then given the choice of destroy, control, or synthesis, an will die as a result.

This was just a silly but interesting idea I wanted to make for photo editing practice. I thought it’d be a nice and sad ending to the romance, and this would apply to all love interests that are also squad-mates. I like the idea of Shepard finally being beat and unable to continue, and that the love interest’s pure determination and love for Shepard pushes them to finish his/her work. If Shepard doesn’t have a love interest available, it will just be the normal ending with Anderson, perhaps still taking control of him to finish the job.

being a shakarian fan, i’ve never really gotten to see how garrus acts in the extended cut when he’s not the one holding shepard’s plaque, and wow, it hurts how sad he’s meant to look but can’t because turianess (or maybe it just wasn’t adjusted for him) and thAT FUCKING VISOR’S IN THE WAY

but i did notice some ways he does express his greif -

his brow plates lowering, his jaw clenching and his manibles shifting around. that alone hurt too see and i thought that was it, just that expression as he pays tribute, but there’s more

he looks like he’s trying to keep a respectful posture as opposed to everyone else, to stand strong and proud in a moment of greif. my poor baby LET YOURSELF MOURN

but then i looked a little harder, and

LOOK AT HIM CLENCHING HIS FISTS! that’s where it all is! when we try to hide our emotions from our face, its often directed to our hands, instead. he’s trying so hard to keep it all in, but he’s struggling.
