Water desalination using a temperature gradient
The research article ‘Water desalination using a temperature gradient’ has been published in Elsevier journal Desalination (Volume 464, 15 August 2019, Pages 1-7).
Abstract
A new concept for reverse osmosis is identified based on the use of a temperature gradient instead of pressure. When the temperature of the permeate-side of the membrane is higher than the feed-side then a significant driving force exists for water transport, which can overcome the osmotic pressure. The thermodynamics for this approach are developed within the paper, and as a result we have developed a single expression for driving force across a membrane for variable temperature, pressure and concentration. The thermodynamic predictions suggest for seawater a temperature difference of less than 1 °C is needed to overcome the osmotic pressure, and less than 3 °C to sustain a water flux equivalent to current reverse osmosis processes. Experimental investigation confirmed the temperature-dependence of water flux and the ability to carry out reverse osmosis at atmospheric pressure. The effect of temperature gradient and salinity on water flux was tested at ambient pressures and found to be in good agreement with the manufacturer-quoted permeability.
The concept identified in this work has the potential to allow reverse osmosis to be carried out without the need for costly high pressure pumps and energy recovery systems, with energy requirements predicted to be lower than 2.0 kWh/m3.

EPA Water Chief Visits Milwaukee on Earth Day and Thanks Water Utility Workers for Protecting the Environment | U.S. EPA News Releases

MILWAUKEE (April 22, 2019) — On Earth Day, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assistant Administrator for the Office of Water David Ross visited Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he toured the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility and recognized its staff for their contributions to protecting public health and the environment.
“Our country’s water utility operators are everyday environmental heroes—tirelessly working on the front lines to provide clean and safe water services to our communities while protecting our environment,” said EPA Assistant Administrator David Ross. “It was a privilege to spend Earth Day with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District staff and thank them for helping to protect the Great Lakes.”
Assistant Administrator Ross began his trip by attending a Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) Commission Meeting, where he highlighted the need to support water sector workforce development and training to ensure the future viability of this critical workforce. Assistant Administrator Ross was joined at the meeting by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer, The Water Council President Dean Amhaus, and Kurt Thiede, chief of staff for EPA Regional Administrator Cathy Stepp.
Roughly one-third of drinking water and wastewater utility operators will be eligible to retire in the next 10 years. In collaboration with its federal and industry partners, EPA is working to promote innovative programs and resources that help utilities attract and maintain a qualified and diverse water sector workforce so that American families and businesses can continue to receive clean, reliable water services. EPA has partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide information on water careers to disabled veterans and with the U.S. Department of Labor to promote tools utilities can use to set up apprentice programs.
Following the MMSD Commission meeting, Assistant Administrator Ross toured the Jones Island Reclamation Facility, where he saw how the facility treats captured wastewater from the metropolitan Milwaukee area and produces a fertilizer composed of heat-dried microbes that have digested the organic matter in wastewater. Assistant Administrator Ross was then given a tour of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Fresh Water Sciences where he was briefed on the cutting-edge freshwater research and science being conducted by its faculty, scientists and students.

Dog Vestibular Disease: What To Do If Your Pet Has A Head Tilt
If your older dog has a sudden loss of balance, he may have a condition called vestibular disease. In this article I will go over the most common signs of dog vestibular disease, and the likely causes. Then I will cover the top 5 remedies that you can do to heal your dog’s vestibular disease at home.
The signs of vestibular disease all relate to loss of balance: stumbling and staggering, a head tilt to one side, an involuntary flickering of the eyes from side to side, circling, falling to one side, and possible droopy eye lids. In people you can liken this to Vertigo – you may lose your balance with a serious ear infection or head cold.
The Vestibular area of your pet is what controls balance. It allows your pet to walk without falling, sends the signals to allow your pet’s limbs and eyes to move correctly. The causes vary – it can be idiopathic (no known cause, only inflammation of the vestibular apparatus), it can be caused by a tumor, an inner ear infection, or an emboli (clot). Idiopathic or Geriatric Vestibular Disease is the most common cause.
If you have an older dog or cat which gets a sudden onset of Vestibular signs, then your pet most likely has Idiopathic Vestibular Disease. This condition will improve in 3 days, and likely fully resolve in 7-14 days. While the inflammation resolves, ensure that your pet is eating and drinking. It is a good idea to have a Veterinary exam. Your vet can rule out an ear infection, and discuss additional diagnostics.
Many dogs with vestibular disease lose their appetite, and can stop drinking. While the disease resolves, you need to support your dog ensuring they keep eating and stay hydrated. For water you can use a needle-less syringe or a Turkey baster. Insert the tip into the center of your pet’s mouth. Tilt his head back, hold his mouth closed and squirt in the fluid. If your dog is not eating, you can stimulate their appetite by warming the food, or force feeding a high calorie liquid nutrition such as ‘Hills Prescription Diet a/d’ or ‘Eukanuba Maximum-Calorie’.
A homeopathic remedy called Rhus Tox may be helpful in this condition. It is useful in geriatric conditions such as skin rashes, arthritis, and in vertigo too. Dose: 30C every 8 hours.
Herbs are often used in brain disorders, and the most important one in Vestibular disorders is called Gingko Bilboa is used for a variety of brain disorders, and may be beneficial here. It increases blood flow to the brain so may help in vestibular disease. The Ginkgo dose is 25 mg per 20 lbs twice daily.
There is a lesser known supplement called Vertigoheel which can also be used. It is useful for senior citizens with vestibular signs. It can be very helpful and has evidence in humans. A typical dog dose is 10 mg twice daily.
You should now have a good understanding of vestibular disease in dogs, and more importantly that it is usually a disease that resolves on its own. Don’t do anything sudden or rash, and give your dog time to heal himself. Consider supportive care, along with some of the holistic remedies such as Rhus Tox and Ginkgo Bilboa.

Understanding Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems
Reverse osmosis water filter systems were originally used in desalination plants. They did a decent job there. Reverse osmosis treatment was also used in the printing industry. They worked well in that arena, as well. But, when reverse osmosis treatment reached the drinking water platform, there were several problems.
In the last 30 years, the popularity of reverse osmosis water filter systems has reduced considering. Reverse osmosis treatment alone is simply not that good, especially, when you compare it to other purification systems on the market, today.
The truth is that reverse osmosis water filter systems do what they are supposed to do. They remove minerals. So, the water is good for printing and film making. It's just not good for people. People need trace minerals in their drinking water. It's better for their health and the water taste fresher. No where on the planet will you find naturally occurring de-mineralized water. In fact, in areas where people are the healthiest, the water has naturally balanced trace minerals that include potassium, calcium, sodium and others.
One thing that reverse osmosis treatment does not do, is remove chlorine. Chlorine removal is the reason that most of us need drinking water filters in the first place.
You see, reverse osmosis water filter systems can not block anything that is lighter than water. A lot of pesticides are lighter than water and so are left behind by reverse osmosis treatment.
So, if we use the system at home for drinking water, we end up with unhealthy de-mineralized water that is contaminated with chlorine and pesticides. Yuck!
Waste water is another problem with reverse osmosis water filter systems. In today's world, when water is in short supply, reverse osmosis treatment wastes about 4 gallons for every one that is cleaned. A dismal record for sure, especially in these times. From an environmental and global stand-point, we simply can not afford to use reverse osmosis water filter systems.
Then there is another disadvantage. When you have a demand for filtered water, you can not count on reverse osmosis treatment. It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to clean a gallon of water. For most of us, time is another thing that is in short supply these days.
When reverse osmosis water filter systems were first converted to home use, they became an instant hit, as nobody knew about the drawbacks. Reverse osmosis treatment was advertised as the one sure way to purer drinking water. But slowly as people learn the truth, reverse osmosis water filter systems are losing their appeal.
Reverse osmosis treatment is like having a dinosaur navigate the freeways. Reverse osmosis water filter systems use old technology. Manufacturers are trying to take advantage of our need for cleaner water, by touting the products as the most "technologically advanced". Do not buy in to the hype.
There are many great water purifiers on the market today. But, let's leave reverse osmosis water filter systems in the past, where they belong.

The Long Island Sound Habitat Mapping Initiative is a federal, state and academic partnership using cutting-edge technologies to collect data and develop advanced seafloor maps to make better-informed decisions for managing the sound. The sound’s diverse seafloor topography supports equally diverse habitats, providing environmental and economic benefits such as recreational and commercial fishing, tourism, marine transportation, wildlife habitat, flood and storm mitigation, and water filtration.
“When Earth Day was created in 1970, the oxygen depletion in the Long Island Sound’s waters was drastically diminishing the fish population and that, along with the physical disruption of the tidal wetlands, was destroying one of the most productive ecosystems in the world,” said EPA Region 2 Administrator Pete Lopez. “Today, the Sound has made remarkable improvements through pollution prevention, stormwater control, and water monitoring. Sharing habitat restoration technology advancements through the new Habitat Mapping Initiative website educates and involves the community in the progress of the Sound’s long-term health and recovery.”

Evan Ward, Head of the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut. “The collaborative mapping efforts are providing critically needed data that will allow us to assess, for example, how communities might be negatively impacted by future climate change or recovering as a result of nutrient mitigation initiatives.”
“What is not seen is often as important, if not more important, than what we can see. Understanding all of the life that the Sound supports is crucial to appreciating and managing this national resource and this website places these previously inaccessible areas of the Sound at the fingertips of scientists, managers and the public,” said Katherine Bunting-Howarth, Interim Director, New York Sea Grant.

Report Offers INDA Members Key Metrics to Assist in Decision Making
Cary, NC, April 22, 2019 — INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Fabrics Industry, announces publication of the sixth edition of the annual North American Nonwovens Supply Report for its members.
Based on extensive research, producer surveys and interviews with industry leaders, the report provides an overall view of North American supply, including the key metrics of capacity, production and operating rates, in addition to regional trade. The 65-page report offers 34 figures and 13 tables.
“This report is the benchmark for North American nonwovens supply information, including both rolled goods information and also material produced for internal consumption. It also presents the industry operating rate; the essential element for strategic planning and business investment decisions,” said Dave Rousse, INDA President.
The report — and the quarterly INDA Market Pulse and monthly Price Trends Summary — are provided to the approximately 370 INDA member companies and associates as part of their membership.
New findings include:
In 2018, North American nonwoven capacity increased to 5.17 million tonnes, a net increase of 3.4% (180 thousand tonnes) over 2017. This growth figure accounts for not only the addition of new lines, but also machine productivity increases and line closures to arrive at a net increase growth figure. In the last two years, 43 new lines have come online and 16 lines have been shut-down. The majority of the new lines are making engineered fabrics for the transportation and filtration markets. North American imports and exports, in tonnage, increased 12.8% and 12.1% respectively year-over-year, after both had declined in 2017. However, the trends continue downward in exports and upward in imports, as over the last five years’ exports have declined 5.4% annually and imports have increased 10.8% annually.  Even with the significant shifts in North American trade dynamics, nonwovens tend to stay where they are produced, with the net trade balance (imports less exports) accounting for only 4.6% of the region’s capacity.

Condensate Corrosion and Protection
Condensate recovery is one of the areas of energy conservation so broadly practiced in industries today. Condensed still still contains about twenty percent of saturated steam, and it is distilled water, almost free of dissolved solids. Therefore, its recovery offers advantages to boilers such as reducing fuel costs, reducing chemical treatment, conserving water, and increasing boiler efficiency. Non-contaminated condensate, which is the product of non-contact steam application, returns to steam boiler's system as feed water. There are two types of condensate receiving system in boilers – the pressurized condensate system and the gravity-vented condensate system. The flash steam from high pressure condensate is recovered by returning this condensate to the deaerator while the gravity-vented condensate returns to the boiler feed tank.
Oxygen Attack
Often people said due to its pureness in nature; steam condensate requires no chemical treatment, but is that so? Condensate is corrosive and can be contaminated by rusts, something that not many people are aware. Sometimes, condensate can be slightly acidic. This is why condensate piping deteriorates faster than steam piping. Oxygen corrosion occurs in condensate piping as pitting, which is the most destructive form of corrosion.
The reaction of oxygen attack is:
4Fe + 6H 2 O + 3O 2 → 4Fe (OH) 3
Carbonic acid thins condensate pipes and causes grooving at the bottom section of the pipes. The output is, if a condensate pipe has predominately pitting, the condensate is high in oxygen, but if the pipe wall is thinning, the condensate pipe suffices from carbonic acid attack. However, where do oxygen and carbon dioxide in condensate piping originate from? Are not all dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide in boiler water arrested mechanically by the deaerator and chemically by sodium sulphite or DEHA in the boiler? Actually, there are two main reasons for this phenomenon. First, when steam condenses, the flow volume shrinks thereby allowing oxygen to infiltrate and dissolve. Secondly, oxygen can also be drawn into condensate system through condensate pumps, leaking heat exchangers, and vents of condensate receiving tanks.
Acid Corrosion
Carbon dioxide can infiltrate in the same way as oxygen, abruptheless, the main source of carbon dioxide in steam is the breakdown of bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity in boiler water to form carbon dioxide.
Here are the reactions that take place:
Carbonate reaction: CO 3 + H 2 O → CO 2 + 2OH
Bicarbonate reaction: 2HCO 3 + heat → CO 2 + 2H 2 O
Carbon dioxide mixes with steam, condenses in condensate to form weak carbonic acid, and lowers the pH. Condensate is so pure that even small amount of weak carbonic acid can drop the pH to 4.5.
The reaction is:
CO 2 + H 2 O → H 2 CO 3
In Malaysia, there was a case in a petrochemical industry where less than twenty percent of the condensate was returned into the boiler because of carbonic acid infiltration. In boiler, acidic condensate lowers pH, erodes metal, increases dissolve iron, and increases the total dissolved solids (TDS) as iron bicarbonate. Iron bicarbonate mixes with boiler water to form iron oxide and carbon dioxide, and inevitably the carbon dioxide mixes with steam again. That is why some people can not maintain a high pH in their boilers despite doubling the dosing of caustic soda. This problem in condensate recovery is disadvantageous to steam boilers and must be prevented.
Protection
Protection of after-boiler condensate lines is required. Corrosion in condensate line can be minimized by volatile amines as corrosion inhibitors. Volatile amines commonly used for condensate line protection today are neutralizing amines and filming amines. Neutralizing amines react with carbonic acid and carbon dioxide to increase condensate pH to 9. One of the commonly used neutralizing amines is cyclohexylamine. Filming amines, on the other hand, form protective films on metal surfaces and protect from oxygen attack, the same way magnetite film does. An example of filming amines is octyldecylamine. Having oil-like property, filming amines coat the metal surface with one-molecule thick. Filming amines have no effect on condensate pH. Carbon dioxide and oxygen are more corrosive in combination. Accordingly, if a system faces both oxygen and acid attacks, a blend of both amines is always recommended.
Beside chemical treatment, condensate quality monitoring should be incorporated on the daily or weekly basis. Take a test of condensate to monitor iron content, hardness, and TDS. Check for color and order. Any change indicates improper treatment or contamination. Condensedate is not enriched to remove contamination, therefore, to prevent iron hydroxide infiltration; magnetic filter can be applied to remove it from condensate. Total iron in boiler feed water for medium pressure boiler should be less than 0.05 ppm, and any increase could mean iron hydroxide infiltration from the condensate line. For boiler operating below 20 bars, a recommended alkalinity rating is 140 to 700 ppm. If the alkalinity level exceeds 700 ppm, bicarbonate and carbonate will break down producing carbon dioxide and entrain in steam, as stated before.
