when carol and steve were kids they would perform made up plays and dance routines for carol's parents. however, if they looked away, even for a second, carol and steve would pout and complain before insisting on starting all over again. this could go on for hours.

No upside down but they still found each other AU where once they get out of Hawkins and move into a little apartment together in the city, Stobin set up a 'date night' routine once a week.
Obviously not a typical date night cause Platonic with a capital P, but they alternate each week who gets to plan the date night activities meaning they both get to do something fun, interesting, exciting, and potentially ridiculous that they themselves wouldn't have thought of.
One such date night, on Robin's turn to plan, is a relatively cheap art exhibition at a local small time independent gallery, focusing on portraits of people the artist has seen around the city, quickly sketched, then painted afterwards.
Her most recent crush had suggested she attend it as her best friend was the artist and was absolutely shitting it over revealing his work to the public that'd inspired those works, certain that everyone would hate them.
They get dressed up, ready to play the part of Fancy Art Connoisseurs, Steve ready to meet and big up Robin to this cute girl Robin had gushed about endlessly as the best wingman ever
Only for them both to wind up stuck one one particular painting titled and described:
E. Munson Angel Incognito Oil on Canvas, The most beautiful man i've ever seen in my life. I was certain i'd seen an angel.
It's Steve.
Sitting in the park, feeding the birds, painted to look... ethereal. Moles dotted with gold, sunlight hitting his soft hair just so, catching the rim of his glasses.
And Robin is immediately on a mission to be the best wingwoman ever because this is NO LONGER about her crush on Chrissy dammit she MUST find this artist, present Steve to him, and "now KISS" smush them both together like barbie dolls.
Good thing Eddie is nearby.

hc that steve knows he has a great ass and it's why he always puts his hands on his hips or stands with his hips tilted a little; it's a habit he does subconsciously because he used to peacock all the time.

Robin: Damn, man. You need friends that aren’t Dustin.
Steve: I have friends that aren’t Dustin.
Robin: Uh-huh? Like who? Don’t say me.
Steve: You.
Steve: Alright, what friends have you got? Don’t say me.
Robin: You.
Steve: See? Neither of us have friends.

Steve and Eddie sure that their friends are safe to come out to about their relationship but quickly finding that Eddie is not safe. Erica would be immediately on his ass, probably saying something to Steve like "you settled for that?" Absolutely riding for Steve, that's her boy, scoops troop for life.

now that "the duffers wrote eddie bc they were too afraid to kill steve" conspiracies have mostly died down, might I suggest the alternative "the duffers wrote eddie bc they were too afraid to have jonathan accused of murder"
jonathan is called a freak in s1, and the whole byers family are pretty judged by the rest of the town
tommy joked that jonathan killed will, and then later he was the last person to see barb alive
jonathan didn’t like his mom’s new boyfriend and then he died
jonathan and nancy were fired from the paper right before their bosses (and all of one of their family’s) were killed
the seeds have been set for years for something of a satanic panic in hawkins, there was no need to invent a new character to become a scapegoat. jonathan even gained a drug habit right as they introduced eddie the maybe-murderous drug dealer. it’s all connected!

I just really hate the "Reasons I love this character" *inserts 1001 headcanons that completely contradict who the character is in canon.*
It happens to a lot of the ST characters but especially Steve. They like him because Joe Keery is pretty and they like the protector element. But they hate everything else about Steve, so they have to make so many things up to justify why he isn't actually the person he is in canon. They just want a pretty face to project on.
It's happened a lot to Eddie too, which is how he has become what he is in fanon rather than his canon characterization. Oh, he's sweet and kind and caring and would never hurt a fly and is always judged by everyone and would never judge others for anything. But in the show he is a judgemental asshole at times, and there are valid reasons for people to judge him (the conformity speech, dealing, Chrissy's body being found in the trailer.)
Jonathan is an amazing and caring older brother and an amazing boyfriend and he is outcast by all the mean popular people. But he outcasts himself, he's a creep because of the photos. And he's not great to Nancy, but there is a communication issue on both sides there. And he's not as good a brother to Will as he's sometimes made out to be. The way in s2 he basically tells Will that he's wrong for not wanting to feel like a freak. And the way he treats Joyce in s2 over her choice to date Bob.
But so much of this fandom also seems to think that OOC means doesn't reflect widely accepted fanon, so calls Eddie in his first episode OOC. Despite the fact that that is his canon characterization.
your last paragraph is *chefs kiss*. a lot of people really do see the characters solely as their fanon depictions and are jarred when they watch the show and realise that is not the case. especially with characters like eddie. but even with steve, i’ve seen so many posts about rewatching s1 and realising that steve doesn’t actually do all the heinous shit the fandom makes out he did.
i think it’s really… interesting? weird? the way that fanon has formed around eddie and jonathan to erase their worst traits and moments, but it’s formed around steve to exaggerate his worst moments, and even come up with entirely made up ones.
this isn’t to say that steve doesn’t have negative character traits, of course he does. but not the kind that the fandom likes to think he has.
anyway! yeah, a lot, honestly the majority, of fan made content in this fandom is using steve’s name and joe keery’s face and that’s it!!! and it’s fucking annoying lmao.
and i think the worst part is that they don’t even realise they’re doing it. they’ve been so deluded by fanon that they honestly think they’re sticking to his characterisation.

What about bartender!Eddie who hosts a quiz night and develops an infatuation with one of the members of a team named ‘Scoops Troop’. He overhears the guy saying he wishes there’d be questions on something he actually knew like basketball.
The next month, there’s an entire round on the NBA.
See, the thing is, the prize for first place is a $50 gift card for the bar, so naturally Eddie wants this guy’s team to win so that they’ll come back sooner than a month’s time. And better yet, the team captain has to give their contact details, which is how Eddie officially meets ‘Steve Harrington’.

Say it with me gang, Steve Harrington doesn't actually have a guilt complex, y'all just made that up because it fits the type of character he embodies. nothing in canon shows him actually dwelling in guilt. the times we see him expressing guilt at all or feeling bad about things he did/didnt do are when other people bring shit up and then he moves on. It's just weird to me that fandom keeps acting like he's the leader of the group and so somehow responsible for everyone's actions (he's not, it's Nancy) or that he's particularly prone to dwelling on anything when he very much isn't. He's one of the most proactive and emotionally mature people on the show. I'm not saying he never feels guilt, because that's stupid of course he does sometimes their lives are fucked up, but acting like he uniquely blames himself for every bad thing that happens is silly and doesn't make sense from what we know of his character.
