Lighter than Air (Spinnetossa)
Spinnerella’s powers have always depended on her emotions. Ever since she was born, she could manipulate the air with the wave of a hand. Seeing Spinnerella fly around her nursery, her parents, King Zephyr and Queen Gale of Breezia, used to joke that she was lighter than air. Unfortunately, Spinnerella’s powers weren’t suited to the mood swings of a child. When she was calm, then so was the weather. But every fussy moment became a windstorm; every tantrum turned into a tornado.
And Spinnerella got angry often. After the war with the Horde began, her feelings seemed to coalesce into an impenetrable fury. Breezia was a small place, and it didn’t survive the war. Spinnerella lost her family and friends, and the Horde swallowed her kingdom. It was though a vast hole had opened up in the earth beneath her feet and devoured everything she knew before closing up again. So much for being lighter than air.
Then she met Netossa. Spinnerella was celebrating her eighteenth birthday as a refugee in the Kingdom of Bright Moon. One day, she received a visit from the princess of Webria, another small kingdom that bordered the Crimson Waste. The princess’ name was Netossa, and she came to Spinnerella with words of hope: Webria was still holding out against the Horde. Netossa told Spinnerella that some of the larger kingdoms were starting a Princess Alliance, and she suggested that they join. At that point, Spinnerella had nothing left to lose, so she agreed.
What she didn’t realize at the time was that she had everything to gain. Netossa became her only friend and fierce defender. What was more, she grounded Spinnerella when her emotions threatened to blow her away. At an Alliance meeting, another princess had criticized Spinnerella for not doing more to protect Breezia from destruction. Spinnerella had been prepared to argue, but Netossa had cut the other woman off so quickly that Spinnerella barely had gotten a moment to breathe.
“What did you do for Breezia?” Netossa had countered. “We’re all together, now.” She had looked back at Spinnerella with determination in her eyes before reaching over and squeezing her hand. “It’s time to think about the future.”
In the moment, Spinnerella had been grateful. Netossa had defended her, cutting off her feelings of guilt when no one else had bothered. But in private, Spinnerella found herself thinking of Netossa at length. Netossa’s kindness. Her determination and skill as a tactician. The way Netossa’s magic echoed that skill: she could create nets that deftly trapped her enemies. Netossa’s cleverness, her beauty. Spinnerella’s mind drifted back to what Netossa had said: “It’s time to think about the future.” What future? The Alliance’s future? Spinnerella’s? She lingered on the memory of Netossa’s hand over hers, warm and encouraging. Could there be a future for them, together?
One day, Spinnerella decided she would confront Netossa about her feelings.
“I have to tell you something,” she’d said, when it was just the two of them in an empty corridor in Castle Bright Moon. Spinnerella had reached for Netossa’s hand, and Netossa had not pulled away.
“W-What?” Spinnerella had asked, a little annoyed.
“You’re in love with me,” Netossa had returned. “I am, too.”
Spinnerella had blinked, and Netossa must have understood how her words came across, because she’d quickly followed them up with:
“I mean, I love you. Not myself. Ugh, that sounded awful.”
Spinnerella had just laughed, relief ballooning in her chest, and kissed Netossa on the cheek. Once more, she felt lighter than air.
That was seventeen years ago. Now, Spinnerella is thirty-five. Some things in her life remain the same: for one, her powers still depend on her emotions. But much has changed. Spinnerella’s anger no longer rules her magic. She no longer needs to feel fury to create a whirlwind; she has control. And what’s more, she knows stability. Spinnerella and Netossa have been married for twelve years. They have a house in the Bright Moon countryside, and they’ve been thinking about having a child. In the meantime, the old Princess Alliance disbanded and was rebuilt, with She-Ra and Queen Glimmer as its leaders. Of course, Spinnerella and Netossa were the first to join. They fought in the new Alliance for three years, winning victories, before everything turned on its head.
In this moment, the Galactic Horde is on Etheria’s doorstep, and once more, war threatens to destroy everything Spinnerella holds close to her heart. Strangely, she feels no fear. No matter what happens to Spinnerella, she won’t be alone. Not only will Netossa be there to fight by her side, but she will also fight for her. Spinnerella knows this because she has found that love is a powerful magic of its own.
