Concept: you’ve been married to your wife for 3 years. You wake up in your bed before she does, your nose cold but your body warm. Careful not to wake her, you get out of bed and your toes curl when your feet hit the cold floor. You brew a pot of coffee and take a cup, making sure to leave enough for her. You pull on a big sweater and walk out onto your deck, sitting in a big wood chair to look out over the forest. The leaves are orange and edged with frost. All is quiet as the sun rises over the trees. You hear the door opening behind you and your wife sits down next to you, wrapping the comforter from your bed around both of you shoulders. You sit there like that until the sun is well up and your coffee cups are empty.

It reminds me that I need to work harder.

I don’t like that her and Holland’s joy for life and each other reminds me that I need to be a better girlfriend. I don’t like that she’s the kind of person that after a long day of flying and fittings will sit in your hotel room after you believe she has nowhere else to go when in fact she is fully aware that you’ve been stood up and she doesn’t want you to be alone. Just like I didn’t like the dozens upon dozens upon roses with little white poppies intermingled in them mere hours after I put my dog to sleep, whose name happens to be Poppy. So if that is the type of person you want for your icon, then I think you have chosen well.”

I just saw a 15-year-old on twitter getting so agitated about people using the word “queer” and how it’s a slur and I just. it just makes me so sad? 

like when I was a kid (like, late-90′s to the early ‘00s) people used gay as a slur way, way more frequently. I remember my fifth grade class getting lectures about how it wasn’t okay to use “gay” to mean “bad” or “stupid” at least once a month because it was the go-to slang insult for kids. on the other hand, I didn’t hear the word “queer” used in a derogatory manner until I was well into my early 20′s. and yes, it is absolutely a cultural/regional/generational difference and yes, people absolutely have the right to not want a term or label applied to them but seeing young lgbtq+ people repeating these talking points that are lifted directly from TERF rhetoric and designed specifically to police trans people and to eliminate all of the fluidity and freedom that makes our community so beautiful is just. it’s really sad

just maybe if you have an intense anger about the word “queer” but you don’t have the same reaction to the word “gay”, maybe just examine where you learned that response and ask yourself if it’s really about protecting people from a harmful word
