I’m finally confronting how unfair mental illness is, how much of my childhood and teen hood was taken from me. That my foundation for life was quicksand. How the body stores trauma and forces us to eventually release it. How trauma changes you. The fact I may never be the person I would have been otherwise but I can be better than I’d otherwise be. I have to. Living your whole life in your head is like living your whole life in prison and you have to readjust to the real world once your released. Blame satan, blame demons, blame psychological processes, blame society, I don’t care. I will keep moving forward and I will live.

I know you can feel hopelessly stuck in your unhealthy coping mechanisms and like you’ll never be able to break out of them or stop doing the things that hurt you or others just because you’re trying to kill the pain, but healthy coping mechanisms can be learned.
You wouldn’t believe how unhealthy my coping mechanisms used to be and how destructive, reckless and impulsive I was just to cope. 
You can learn new coping skills. You don’t always have to be stuck in the ones you’re using now. You can replace them over time with healthier ones that don’t hurt you or anyone else. You can make healthier long-term decisions. It is not impossible. No matter how many times you return to the same unhealthy ones. No matter how many times you relapse. It is not impossible.
It may take a long time but it means that you won’t always be stuck in this seeming cycle of unhealthy coping. Over time, like exercising a muscle, it gets easier and easier to access your newer, healthier coping mechanisms, and to leave the old ones behind.
I just want to remind you that there is hope and even the most destructive, addictive coping mechanisms can be replaced with new ones, no matter how hopeless you think it may be, or how hard you’ve been trying. As someone who has replaced their destructive coping habits with new ones, and who never thought they would have been able to, it is possible.
