I have many problems w Bioware, but they could have made Kaidan an asshole due to his difficult past to appeal to cishet male gamers, but no, instead, they made him a sensitive, kind, loving man. It’s one of the best shit they’ve done

She thought she was over it. Six fucking years had passed. She never talked about it–there was no need to talk about it. In the days and months right after she had done enough talking about the disaster to last a lifetime. Shepard had passed every psych eval the Alliance threw at her, impressed superiors and subordinates alike with her resilience. “Shepard’s a strong one,” they would say.

When a thresher maw, a fucking  thresher maw tosses the Mako into the air like a tennis ball, Shepard doesn’t feel strong. When her team climbs out after having shot the damn thing to hell, Shepard doesn’t feel resilient. She doesn’t feel like a goddamn hero when she rails at Kaidan–Lieutenant Alenko for telling her to snap out of it and drive. He fucking saved their asses and all she can do is scream at him for being out of line and breaking the chain of command. It’s bullshit and they both know it. It’s not Kaidan’s fault, but he’s there, within range, and a visible target. 

Later they return to the Normandy, and Shepard contains herself in her cabin. She should own up to her behavior, call him up, and apologize like a goddamn adult, but she can’t allow herself to think about it right now. Every time she does she’s back in her makeshift quarters, rolling out her sleeping mat for the night in a creepy-ass abandoned colony when the ground starts to shake. She’s trapped like a rat in a cage, and all she can hear is the screams. All she can taste is the blood in her mouth when she bit her tongue to keep from screaming herself. She can still smell the acid and the stench of it eating away at the corporal who just hit on her five minutes before. She can still feel the throbbing in her legs as she crept on an endless march back to the landing zone to call for help.

Back on Earth, when she had bad days, she would run from one city block to the next until she collapsed next to a dumpster somewhere. On the Normandy, Shepard doesn’t have that luxury. She doesn’t even have a fucking punching bag. Pacing around her cabin just makes her feel worse, so she settles for screaming herself hoarse into her pillow, and punching her mattress. 

Shepard’s not over Akuze. She wonders if she ever will be.

Me, starting Mass Effect 2 for the Nth time: I've seen it all before, I know all the dialogs almost by heart. Nothing, literally nothing, can shake or impress me anymore.
