i think the problem with the trolley problem is that people keep trying to equate it to real world issues when obviously real world issues are a shit ton more complicated than a lever and a trolley. the original premise of the trolley problem was “what if you were put in a situation where there was no right answer, where every choice led to suffering? what would you do?”. and in that sense i also don’t think it’s fair to say that there’s a secret third answer to the trolley problem, because that negates the point of it entirely. obviously in real life it’s different, theres almost always a secret third answer that’s better, but the trolley problem is about that little minority in the “almost” where there isn’t a better answer and the choice is between suffering and more suffering, and the question is whether you want to get blood on your hands if it means less people are hurt.

i know how ethical dilemmas work i just think it is a useless framework to apply to politics. if it has hypothetical utility that's a different case
