What if I just made tiny little posts about tiny little things I like
youtube
This song slays. Strive never missies.
I especially love the break at around 34 seconds, it’s just, It scratches my brain good.
Also the ending is raw as fuck
“I’m not here to fit in this world, I just want to make a difference” mmmmmmm it’s peak.
I love A.B.A I’m so glad she got in.
(I know Slayer is probably next but please give us venom in season 4)

So I'm generally someone who does not give a fuck about my art does numbers wise, or rather I don't want to. but I still constantly check my notifications after posting anything but I don't really know why? I'm probably just skinner boxed into checking them for the constant dopamine hits. It makes me very cautious about posting.
I just want people to know I make art for myself first, I am not really actively trying to gather an audience of any kind but if one comes I welcome it. Either way to those who have followed me, thank you.

Penny's Big Breakaway
First played on February 21st 2024 https://store.steampowered.com/app/1955230/Pennys_Big_Breakaway/ I have... a lot to say about this game... I love it, I love it so so SO much, BUT it absolutely wrecks me to say that it is a little under baked. I will start off by saying I was extremely excited to play it since the words "from the team behind sonic mania" were uttered on that one Nintendo direct. I followed development closely and consumed every piece of content that was drip fed throughout the months. I was absolutely floored when the game was shadow dropped. Now, I LOVE 3D platformers, and I'm inclined to call them my favorite game genre. Despite all the flaws I do have with the Penny's I would put it firmly in my top 10. I also want to mention that I'm a little freak that plays games I like in weird ways so any strange issues I have with it might not apply to the average person. I want to talk about the movement first as it is the most important thing to me in a 3D platformer. the game is stellar... when it works... Penny's is one of the smoothest platformers I've ever played until your momentum is cut off by some random bit of jank, whether that be the roll move deciding to randomly stop, environmental hazards like water and lava having 0 grace period, and clipping into walls, which happened way more often than id like to admit. Its clear to me that the game needed a good amount of polish time before shipping. Level design in this game is largely fantastic although I think its a bit homogenized if that makes sense. excuse the dreaded act of comparison but, a similar game like super Mario 3D world for example, designs its levels with a central mechanic in mind and then elaborates on it throughout a level. Penny's does this sometimes but a majority of levels feel like a strange blend of ideas that leads them to feel kind of unfocused. this Isn't necessarily a bad thing as I think the game has free enough movement to warrant it. The game never got boring per say, but id be lying if I said it didn't lose some steam towards the end. I think another part of the game that gradually got a little stale is the art direction and environment design. again, never bad, but I noticed areas getting less creative in the last third of the game. I do however want to say, despite my gripe, this games visual direction is OUTSTANDING and like nothing I've ever seen. it starts incredibly strong and despite becoming a little uncreative it is always a treat to look at. An aspect that I can give absolutely nothing but endless praise is the soundtrack of course. Nearly every song is masterfully composed and instantly memorable. As a big fan of Tee Lopes previous work there was no doubt in my mind that this ost would knock it out of the park. although it is not a one man show, Sean Bialo was a more than welcome addition, they are responsible for some of my favorite tracks on Spark the Electric Jester 3 so it was great seeing them here. Some of my favorite tracks on the Penny ost are:
Puppet Pioneer
Jig's Up, Penny
Outside The Eidophusikon
Balearic Birds
Penny in a Pinch and my absolute favorite track in the game:
Refracting Feelings (Pengo Mix)
I want to exclaim once again, I LOVE this game, its currently a frontrunner for my game of the year and I don't want a couple of minor gripes to taint the view of what is otherwise an excellent, beautiful, and just straight up fun game. Play Penny's, listen to its soundtrack, share it around. We need more games like it. I think everyone at Evening Star should be more than proud of what they've created. I can feel this game oozing with love and passion for the medium and I don't think any minor issue I have with it could take away from that. It wants to exist and it wants YOU to play it.

SWOLLEN TO BURSTING UNTIL I AM DISAPPEARING ON PURPOSE
Played on February 2nd 2024 https://1207.itch.io/swollen-to-bursting-until-i-am-disappearing-on-purpose I played this mostly blind and it hit me like nothing ever has. I wholeheartedly recommend it. never has a piece of media seen the pain I've gone through on quite that deep of a level. it feels pointless to talk about the gameplay. the music and visuals are immaculate and raw. (very much anticipating that soundtrack release.) i will just say if you like yume nikki and petscop and feeling things about yourself give this a shot. art is fucking cool.

Breakpoint
played on 2023-08-01
Delightful, absolutely inspired. I love how Filet Group manages to blow me away with everything they make. When I played Yo Noid 2 back in the day, I realized there was something about that game, some spark that goes beyond the surface level shitpost. This team has a shine of inspiration like I've never seen before. It touches my heart and inspires me greatly.
About the actual game: I've said it once and ill say it again, I LOVE PERSPECTIVE FOCUSED GAMEPLAY. As a mechanic typically seen in puzzle games like monument valley and FEZ it is super interesting seeing it recontextualized in a 3d platformer setting. The sound design is EXCCELENT. The character design courtesy of Harrison Bright (https://twitter.com/HarrisonHBright) who is quickly becoming my favorite character designer is superb as always.
Overall my strongest recommendation on this journey so far. It wont take you more than 20 minutes. An interesting tidbit, on the kickstarter Page for The Big Catch, the team lists FEZ and Shadow of The Colossus as two examples of their inspirations. The FEZ influence in Breakpoint is easy to spot, and a bridge resembling the iconic bridge from Shadow of The Colossus makes an appearance. the game was released in 2017, so that just goes to show me how deep rooted these inspirations really are if they make their way into so much of these wonderful developers work and I have nothing but respect for that.
A trend I’ve noticed with indie games lately is how derivative they can be. A lot of indie devs try to make their own version of a series that already exists but forget the part of actually making it their own. So you end up with a lot of content that doesn't really add anything to the greater gaming landscape. I understand a lot of devs want to revive their favorite dead franchises and hell i don't even think all of them are bad. aside from The Big Catch, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is my most anticipated title because I love jet set radio, but I recognize that Team Reptile has injected enough of their own ideas and innovation to make their game stand apart. All this to say, this is 100% NOT a problem with Filet Group’s games. They bring such a creative inspiring energy with everything they make and I love their work for it. Breakpoint is wonderful, I am BEYOND excited to play The Big Catch whenever its ready, and I wish nothing but the best for these incredible, forever talented developers.
also Harrison if you ever read this please make a portfolio I want to see ALL of your work. :)

Penance

I cant fucking believe I recognized Gianni. anyways this game is pretty sick. If you've played any of New Blood’s Outings you're gonna feel right at home here.
let me get the negatives out of the way first.
I did notice a few flaws, all fairly minor but I think the experience could be improved if they are fixed. firstly i think that guns should get blacklisted if they run out of ammo, it felt pretty bad to run around and scroll through my guns only to see that I'm empty. another thing (more so personal preference) i would of liked if the game used more linear and curated small areas rather than big open ones, running around being chased by a ton of enemies got a little repetitive. i also wish the music was more curated rather than cycling through tracks when you die. those are about all my negatives though.
now for the positives
I found the gameplay in this to be very similar to DUSK. Very fast and chaotic, Its B-hop heavy so thank god for the autojump. the game started off fairly easy but ended up being quite challenging, my fingers still hurt while I'm typing this lol.
the visuals in this game were pretty on point, every object and enemy looks distinct and has a very clear silhouette. I love the use of color to differentiate the levels, extremely effective stuff.
Great character designs too.
The sound was SUPER good, everything felt satisfying as hell. and so was the music, some great stuff.
Penance was a quick and simple boomer shooter that I enjoyed quite a bit as a big fan of the genre.
i think the game could have greatly benefited from some more unique movement or weapons to make it stand out but for what it is, its pretty great.

LUNA

This is a VR game so I recommend playing it in VR if you have the means to ( if not a non vr version exists as well).
So this was wonderful. a beautiful exploration of pain and trauma presented in a gorgeous art style.
I actually was caught fairly off guard by the gameplay of this, i really didn't expect the mechanics to evolve to the degree they did and as a huge fan of perspective puzzles, i had a big smile on my face with every one I finished.
I LOVED the sound design in this game. every single object you touch makes a distinct sound and they always harmonize with the music, which is also fantastic. I almost feel like i was doing the game a disservice by playing it with the kind of crappy quest 2 headphones.
My favorite level was the bear level, some major Psychonauts vibes.
The art in general gave a lot of Psychonauts vibes, but less y’know deformed and more cute if that makes sense. I love the character design in this.
There is a Bo Burnham quote in the credits.
Overall this game was super heartwarming. just an adorable little inspirational story that feels like it was made from a genuine place.
