samdean literally get worse. they start out in an astronomically healthier place than they end. like consider how pilot dean not only has left sam to his devices at stanford for years already but willingly intends to leave him there again by the end of the episode. imagine like, any sam later in the show telling dean he’s leaving him to go to college. dean would lock him in a basement first. s1 sam says they’ll never be brothers the way they were again and that he wants life outside of dean. we don’t even have to imagine what a later season sam would do if dean devalued their brotherhood. canonically he goes crazy. every time. isn’t that beautiful. they started out almost healthy if not estranged and tense then ended like fucked in the mind enmeshed. tl;dr samdean get worse and it’s the best part of the show.

"the narrative is going to kill you!" "the narrative loves you!" have you considered; the narrative loves you so much that it's killing you. you want to escape but it smothers you and swallows you whole.

Supernatural is a show about absence. Everything about the narrative is about who isn’t there. The absence of Mary pushes John into hunting. The absence of Sam caused the rift in the family. The absence of John sends Dean back to Sam. The absence of Jess motivates Sam to hunt the demon. The absence of Sam leads Dean to sell his soul. The absence of Dean sends Sam into Ruby’s bloody arms. Every single important scene in Supernatural contains a hole, a negative space that another character would fit perfectly into.

I think the problem the writers have is thinking that sam is the cool calm and collected one and dean is the one going off doing crazy girl shit. did yall even see s1. every 30 seconds sam is like "someone died in my brain, let's go" [drives the impala into the side of a building] "honestly that thought hadnt occurred to me ://" [laughs at his brother diving off a bridge into sewer water] [decapitates someone with razor wire] [runs away to california for a second time] [becomes the central player in the demon hunger games] and dean literally just wants to find their dad. sam can pass for normal bc hes the only one in this godforsaken family with a filter, but hes just as, if not more wildly unhinged as his brother.

Instead of an angel and a devil every American has a little Angelino that say shit like "Leave your wife. Start a salsa company. Join a cult." And a little New Yorker that says stuff like "You shoulda killed that guy and ate his body."

sam & dean should've been each other's destruction and resurrection at least once during the series. they should've fought more, but not bickering, i mean physical blows, shoving punching kicking hair-pulling biting choking stabbing shooting. intentionally hurting each other because they simply cannot decipher their feelings for each other so they turn to their most base instincts to express anything to each other, including killing and subsequently resurrecting each other over and over and over

actually i'm thinking about it and i've decided i like the bunker because it's like. this wonderful site of rural horror. like. you are a family totally disconnected from society, with absolutely no outside oversight or sanity checks. so in this extreme isolation your family dynamic can just get sicker and sicker and sicker and no one will ever say to you hey that seems fucked up. and to symbolize this you live in a giant empty bunker, big enough to get lost alone in for days, in the middle of the woods with no neighbors for miles. in the bunker no one can hear you scream
