Ways I’m accidentally distracting myself from reading: listening to some kickass Mozart and staring at my sleeping cat.

Book 24 of 2022: A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin
This book is so quietly revolutionary. The hero goes on an epic journey, not to make a name for himself, win something, or fight someone, but to undo something terrible he did out of youthful pride. And the prose! It is just so beautiful. Incantatory. This is one of those books that reveals something new to you every time you read it - read it if you haven't, re-read it if you have.
What to read next: Who compares with Ursula? Nobody, it's impossible. But if you want some more journeying vibes & intense love of story, check out A Stranger in Olondria, by Sofia Samatar.

📖 Displacement by Kiku Hughes
“I think sometimes a community’s experience is so traumatic, it stays rooted in us even generations later. And the later generations continue to rediscover that experience, since it’s still shaping us in ways we might not realize.”
A historical-fiction story with a twist of truth and reality, as the character of our author finds herself thrown back in time during the Japanese Internment Camps, desperately wanting to connect with a grandmother she never knew.
Kiku experiences a “displacement” as she sent back in time thrice, experiencing a part of history that’s been often covered up, bringing to light the inhumane and unjust treatment of a minority group. This plays into the present day future of Kiku’s time amid the xenophobia of the Trump campaign.
I liked the story and all the unique characters who had different and unique personalities and thoughts. They were not cookie cutter figures of social justice. They all had their own individual feelings and thoughts on what it meant to fight for freedom.
This is a must-read, as it not only gives us a look into the Japanese Internment Camps, but uses it as a foil to look at how history repeats itself and what we need to do to fight injustice.
“Memories are powerful things.”
