Summer 2021 is the deadline for Canadian temporary residents to restore their status
Tumblr media
IRCC - Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has given temporary residents another chance to extend their stay in Canada.
Temporary residents who had a valid status on January 30, 2020, or after, but whose status expired on May 31, 2021, or before, will have until August 31, 2021, to request the reinstatement of their status, according to the Canadian government webpage.
This is an extension of a public policy that came into effect on July 14 and was originally valid until December 31, 2020. It affects workers, students, and visitors who were in Canada when their status has expired. They have 90 days to apply to restore their temporary status. However, due to service disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, those affected now have until the end of August to submit their requests, if they meet certain conditions.
Applicants must be in Canada with valid status between January 30, 2020, and May 31, 2021, to be eligible for the new policy. They must have remained in Canada since their arrival and have lost their temporary status during this period. To restore their temporary residency status, they must also have paid the application processing fee.
The policy also extends to work permit holders who have job offers while their application is being processed. The policy can also be applied to their work permit application or their restoration. If temporary workers are approved under this policy, they may be allowed to begin employment pending the decision to restore their status or obtain a work permit.
To be eligible for this temporary work permit, foreign nationals must have submitted an employer-specific work and catering permit application and paid all costs. They must have held a valid work permit within 12 months before the date on which they submitted their restoration request. They intend to work for the employer or profession listed in the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or LMIA exempt job offer included in their work permit application. They filled out an IRCC web form to request the public policy and they requested that the exemption be applied until a decision was made on their work permit application.
