on whether or not authors "should" reply to comments on ao3:
if you want to reply to comments on ao3, do! it isn't scary and can be fun! and no one is grading you on your performance; you can reply with an emoji, a simple "thanks!", or you can write a novel back—literally anything goes!
replying to comments can give you an avenue to get to know people who interact with your work or art; meet people who are into similar things as you, which can sometimes be difficult; and potentially create the space to maybe even build friendships!
but please, don't let yourself be eaten up by guilt for not responding to comments.
i especially keep seeing this talked about in relation to replying to comments as boosting engagement for your work, and i just—i am begging you to free yourself from thinking of fandom as a such a transactional place—thinking of interacting with others as boosting engagement is in some ways antithetical to the gift economy that fandom is. the fact that people think about fandom in that way makes me so sad. and tired. and besides that: it's can be super stressful for some people to think of creating art and participating in community in such capitalistic terms. if it works for you, that's all well and good, but if it doesn't, please don't stress about it. if you're not having fun and enjoying yourself, you're doing it wrong.
besides that, polls have gone around showing that readers don't find it noteworthy if authors don't respond to comments. will they be a little disappointed? maybe! but the vast majority of people will not think worse of you for not replying. everyone has their own reasons for replying or not replying, and it's okay to do either.
again: reply if you want to, but don't feel guilty for not replying.
have fun. be kind. engage with your fandom community in a way that works for you.
it's extremely disheartening to see people telling others what to do or how to participate in fandom. your only real obligation is to be kind in this shared space.
