Hi! I've seen you mention Hide's 'because i love him' reffered to Kaneki- now I'm curious, like Mika's, di you by any chance know if it was a romantic "i love him"? Because in the italian official translation, it's platonic, but Mutsuki is also reffered as female for the greater part of the story so I don't really trust it.. I'm assuming it was probably romantic given how you talked about it?

That’s interesting, I know there were other translations that got that treatment as well unfortunately.

There was a big argument over it, but several native speakers came and confirmed that the specific wording in Japanese wasn’t explicitly a standard romantic “I love you”, but it was not something you would tell someone who was only a best friend, especially from a male friend to another male friend.

So the general consensus was, yes, it was intended to be romantic!

Amon, who is standing by a women we the readers knew he was in romantic love with, smiled and said “No [you don’t need another reason].” Because, obviously, he understands what it’s like to be motivated by said love since his reason is standing right next to him. Given the way this little scene was framed, this was another strong hint to us that it was in fact a romantic confession!

Lately, whenever I think of Hide, I think of this certain bible verse.  I think it fits him pretty well.  Whether you choose to believe that Hide’s devotion to Kaneki is romantic or simply as friends, I think a majority can agree that it is an “agape love” for sure.
