I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

Adobe are being assholes and their generative AI software is scraping artists who didn't consent to this despite Adobe's assurances that the model only used licensed stock images.

Because that is a DICK MOVE, I'm trying to find an alternative to Lightroom for my photo processing, so I tried two potential alternatives today: Capture One and ON1 Photo Raw. Here's a comparison.

This is the image I'm working with. It's overexposed but in focus, and needs adjustments to cropping and color.

Here's a quick pass at editing it in Adobe, just so I can compare software results

I've spent a lot of time developing my color presets in Adobe to achieve the results I want, and getting colors I like is probably the most important thing in photo editing for me

Here's my result in Capture One

The colors are a little muddier, but I actually think it handles recovering fine detail from blown-out areas better than Adobe. The software offers a ton of creative control and the option to make fine-tuned presets, so I think with work, I can probably get back to color presets I like (although I weep for the lack of a fine-tuned camera calibration option)

Here's what I got in ON1 Photo RAW

I actually like this a lot - the colors and fine detail are both nice, and it has a "purity" slider for shadows and highlights that's wonderful on weird color cast. That said, it doesn't offer nearly as much fine creative control as Capture One, so I think I may pass on it. That said, if you're looking for something with great out of the box results, this might be a good product for you.

Both programs have 30-day free trials, so if you're looking for an alternative to Adobe's evil, they might be worth a shot.

Hey, amidst the chaos of... everything on the internet, pay attention to Hawaii/Hawai'i!

There have been plans from a non Hawaiian organisation to build a 5 acre parking lot, 13 lot subdivision and a comfort station for tourists on the ridge of the sacred Pololū Valley!

This project doesn't acknowledge Pololū Valley as a wahi pāna (a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawaii/Hawai'i) and instead treats it as just plain land that can be sold to a highest bidder.

Pololū Valley is anything but that.

So please sign the petition to stop this project! As of writing this, 883,470 people have, but we need more!
