I’d like to add though that it was Joseph’s wish for his children to live initially. He wanted for Magda to leave the country with the children, so they wouldn’t have to go through this all. Magda insisted that she’d stay, the children also, knowing fully well that this would mean she’d have to kill them. They had big fights about this. I must say that I very despise Magda entirely, not only for this, but also for I believe she was a very cruel, selfish and unsympathetic woman. Joseph wanted to kill himself along with Hitler as for himself it would’ve ended bad no matter what. In that situation the best option was death.

Why did Joseph agree to have his children killed? How did he even react after their murder? Did he support his wife after all?

You have to understand that the situation was going to end horribly, no matter what would end up happening.

A large portion as to why Joseph & Magda decided to commit suicide (and take the children’s lives as well) was because of the other potential solution. If he had allowed both himself and his family to have been captured by the soviets, they absolutely would have been tortured to death, especially due to his major contribution to the regime, and closeness to Hitler.

I don’t know about you, but the idea of my children and wife having to go through nothing but torment within their final days alive sounds horrible, to me. It’s not that he wanted the children to die —- it’s that the option simply seemed to be the best path to take. Even if the children wouldn’t have gotten killed by the soviets, they’d still be forced to live as orphans for the rest of their lives, and wouldn’t have had a chance at experiencing normalcy ever again.

It’s a sad situation, which really couldn’t have ended well no matter what. He loved his children.
