Violins from Trash
Happy National Violin Day! Our collections have many photos of famous violinists and pristine instruments, but the violins crafted by Ed Huddleston may be the best works of art and craftsmanship.Â
Huddleston, who ran the dump yard along Cedar Lake in the 1930s, repaired, salvaged, and built hundreds of violins from among the trash he collected. To tune his violins, Huddleston used a phonograph and classical violin record given to him by his first customer. Huddleston was one for a challenge. As he told the Minneapolis Tribune, “All I need is a lot of time, and I’ll fix any [violin] that can be fixed.” Most of Huddleston’s refurbished and homemade instruments went to Minneapolis school children.
