Jayne had never much minded the store when they'd stop in. The owners were decent enough, never really tried to overcharge too badly, knew when to back down when it came to negotiating a price. That and their produce was always fresh, something that was usually hard to come by. Jayne stepped through the entrance, shooting a look at some local who was staring at him, and trying to see where Kaylee'd run off to.
He should've figured he'd find her wandering around the fruit, her eyes darting toward the strawberries, same as always. It was kind of amusing, the way she lit up for the little red berries. He'd never understood her love of them, himself. The little seeds got stuck in your teeth and they just tasted a little odd to him. Still, he wasn't about to drag her away at the moment, she was enjoying herself and, for the first time, wasn't right on him like a hound tracking an animal.
"So y'gonna spend all day dawdlin' over the produce, cause we got business to tend to," he asked with a smirk.

So the Doc was the one gonna be tortured with the shirt? Sat fine with him. Even the fact it was a gift for the stuck up Lǘzi couldn't stop the smile that'd played onto his face. "Can't say I'm not glad. Wouldn't catch me in a shirt like that even if I was six feet under." Although the Doc's gonna be the prettiest girl at the ball in that lil number, he thought, another guffaw slipping out.
"Yeah, s'pretty close. And y'ain't just gonna be droppin' me off. If we're gettin' parts an' all, I'm helpin' ya carry 'em back. It ain't right, lettin' ya take all that on alone." Okay, so it was a half truth. The other reason he had for sticking with her back to the ship was seeing Simon's face when he got the girlie shirt. The boy had tells, and Jayne had picked every one of them out, so if the Doc hated it, he'd know.
He wouldn't tell her, though, no matter what he saw. Jayne didn't like seeing Kaylee hurt. Seeing her go from happy to mopey made him feel off center somehow, like there was something wrong in the 'verse. "If y'want, once we drop everything off, you're more'n welcome t'come with me out for a couple. I can promise there ain't gonna be any fightin'. Still a damn sight too sore t'even think 'bout throwin' fists."

Jayne felt a twinge of pity for whoever she was gifting the shirt to...the thing was kinda ugly. Ruffles and such seemed pointless, just more for anyone you're fighting to grab at. He'd have to have a word with her about that. Only ones she could be giving gifts were the crew, and he wasn't too hot on the idea of them going down cause of a shirt. Then again, he couldn't see anyone on the crew wearing that.
Her voice broke into his thoughts, and he couldn't help but bark out a laugh at what she'd asked. "Now really, can you see me takin' to the high life, gettin' all shined up and such, and goin' in with 'polite society'? There's only one time I ever wore a suit, and that was at a funeral. No, f'me t'do that, there'd have t'be one helluva special event. Best you'll get outt me otherwise is a button up and pants that ain't smeared with oil and gunpowder...Wait, that shirt ain't for me, is it?"
His face drained of all color at the thought that she might be picking something that looked like that out for him. "Look, if you're plannin' on draggin' me into a situation where I gotta play proper, I ain't goin' in lookin' like I got on a blouse!" Jayne's eyes were searching hers, hoping against hope that wasn't the case. "Cause I'll tell ya, if that's what I stuck 'round for, I'll be rectifyin' that choice right quick."

The tone she had in her voice shot straight into him. Kaylee sounded angry, but in a different way than normal. He watched her run off, heard her calling after him, and despite the fact he was free, trudged over to her. Aw, hell...might as well just come with her, not like ya can't slip away later on your own. "Okay. Mal said t'keep an eye on me, and 'm not tryin' t'make a liar out of ya. But you tell anyone we was lookin' at any of this..."
He didn't bother finishing the thought. What was he gonna say to her? 'I'll knock y'out' or 'I'll have your 屁股'? He couldn't threaten her, it didn't sit right with him. 'Sides, if he had half an inkling of what was going through her head while he was gone, he at least owed her some peace of mind. It wasn't smart, having the one person who looks at you as more than a gun mad at you. Best to just play along and stick close.
He tilted his head at the shirt she was eyeing. It was something else, he had to give her that. Damned if it didn't suit her, too. His hands ended up stuffed in his pockets, an old habit of his when he was either nervous or uncomfortable. In this case, he didn't want to be in the middle of the market, at least not here. He was happier on the edges, looking at new holsters, or maybe a new jacket. "So...what's the occasion you'd be wearin' that for?"

A Character-Building Question Meme
Sakura and I tried to come up with a list of questions that we didn’t see around very often, and we wanted to share! So, here it is, yet another character-building question meme.
Leave one of my characters and a number (or more) in my ask, and I will answer:
What foods do they love, and what foods do they refuse to eat?
What is their weapon of choice, and what weapon do they dislike using the most?
What is their preferred method of transportation?
Who did they look up to the most as a child? Who do they look up to as an adult?
What kind of weather makes them happy, and what kind makes them sad?
What languages do they speak? Do they have any idiosyncrasies or identifiable patterns of speech, word usages, etc?
What clothing do they like to wear, and what do they wear most often?
Do they eat a healthy diet? A varied one?
As a child, what did they want to be when they grew up? Did they realize their dream?
What makes them feel safe or secure? What makes them feel insecure or unsafe?
What do they do when they need comfort? Do they seek out a person, a food, an activity, etc?
Do they sing or play any musical instruments, even if just for fun? How well?
What decision in their past did they most analyze and fret over after the fact?
What are they like when they are drunk?
Where in their body do they keep stress or tension?
What do they think about where they currently live? If they could move elsewhere, would they?
Do they have any pet peeves or petty dislikes, and how do they react to encountering them?
What foods do they eat most often? Do they enjoy it?
What is their favorite texture?
Do they like to travel? How do they pack and prepare?
How well do they take criticism? How do they react to others noticing their flaws?
What are they like when they get sick? Do they have a particular system (ears, lungs, etc) that illness gravitates to?
What is their favorite drink?
How do they react to being physically injured or undergoing medical treatment?
What do their hands look and feel like?
How much do they eat, and how often? Do they drink appetite suppressants (tea, coffee, etc)?
Do they have children? Do they want children? What names would they choose?
What is a gift that they have received that was especially touching or significant?
How do they arrange or decorate their living space?
Do they have any allergies or chronic conditions?

Kaylee wasn't slacking on keeping watch on him, so it looked like slipping off for a drink...or five...was outta the question. "If y'ain't against headin' to a bar at some point, I'd appreciate it. I was plannin' on headin' out last night, but I didn't have the chance." Mostly cause everyone was bawlin' me out f'no good reason. "But seein' as how you're bein' stricter'n the Cap'n himself, I'm guessin' that ain't an option."
Jayne followed along behind her, giving her space and watching her eyes flicking from stall to stall. Seeing her down in the engine, covered in grease and whatnot, you'd never expect the same person to be fawning over some dresses, shiny as they'd look on her. He couldn't quite wrap his head around it, or her. Out of everyone he worked with, she was the only one he still didn't understand.
"Y'know," he said, picking up his pace to catch up, "If you'd wanna browse 'round, I could head to the bar, have one or two while you get your fill of all this. Ain't like anyone's gonna find out, is it?" It was a cheap ploy, sure, but one he was hoping would work. The man deserved a few minutes to himself taking part in his favorite game of "drink til the floor hits you in the face".

It was first thing when Mal rousted Jayne from a dead sleep. The words he was saying weren't quite sinking in, something about going off ship for supplies. That was the last thing he wanted to do. He muscles were still yelling at him, and so were the bruises and that damn slash he'd taken. But he wasn't about to start anything, not with how pissed the Cap'n was. So he rolled on out of bed, got ready and headed to the cargo bay, expecting to be stuck escorting the Doc for medical stuff, or maybe with Zoe. He was hoping it was the latter.
But seeing Kaylee there was a bit of a shock, as was what she was telling him. "Now you wait just a minute. You're tellin' me that I'm goin' along cause I need an eye kept on me? You're yankin' my chain, right?" His hands mashed against his face, a small grunt coming along with the motion as he followed her. "Y'know what, f'get I said anythin'. Let's just get this done."
Same gorramn planet, same old business, if he had to guess. Wasn't much changed in their dealings when they were here. Better they sent him along than anyone else. Not that he didn't trust the rest, but Jayne's ego kind of put him to thinking he was the best muscle in the 'verse. If the girl was gonna be sent out running, he was glad to go with her. "So, what exactly are we pickin' up this time? Anythin' we're gonna end up runnin' cause of?"

As the grav. thrusts ceased their operations, the Firefly-class ship gently thudded to the ground. Though they had been angling for this stop a few days now, no one was more relieved than the mechanic, Kaylee. With Persephone in sight, all had been in better spirits, and in turn Kaylee was feeling more cheerful. Things were running smoothly once more, at least mechanically. It showed through the lift in her step and the smile on her face, no longer worried or concerned. More than anything, she was relieved one of their long departed crew members had resurfaced on an unlikely little dust world, sheer luck to their meeting. How Jayne had wound up kidnapped of all things was a mystery to Kaylee.
Maybe some nasty piece of work had seen a prize to be had in the mercenary. He was a good shot, and fairly reliable… If you could pay. Kaylee didn’t fear betrayl on account of Jayne. For whatever reason, she trusted him inexplicably. You had to, living so closely with those you worked with. And with him helping Simon and River on Ariel without so much as a peep, well, maybe there was hope yet. As the cargo bay door fell and became a ramp, Kaylee happily strut out into the sunlight. It was a brown and musty coloured as the rest of the ‘Verse, but there was fresh air and plenty of people.
“C’mon, we go stock to take.” Kaylee waved behind her, meeting the merc’s eye. In no way had she properly forgiven him, but there was time later for all her ‘lady problems’ as Mal would phrase it. It weren’t a matter of being a woman - she’d just never expected to lose someone so close to her in such a way. Death, that had closure. But vanishing off the planet without a peep? “Cap’n said to keep an eye on you, so you better watch yourself.”

Well, I'm sure he wasn't the only one protectin' you. I know that the Cap'n makes sure you're looked after, along with the rest of 'em. And I know you can handle yourself, don't stop me worryin' a little. Prayers an' all that don't make a difference...S'why I was worryin'.
I can promise ya, I'm not goin' anywhere. Like I said, I learned my lesson, one I don't plan on repeatin'. Mostly cause it's embarrassin'. I'm lookin' forward to things bein' nice and laid back, trust me. I've had enough action t'last me a while. I just wanna get back to exercisin', sleepin' in my bunk, and listenin' to the sounds of the ship while I rack out. That and wakin' up to real food for breakfast.
Strange as it's gonna sound, I missed the cookin'. Can't say I've had a good meal since I last saw ya. But I should be gettin' some sleep, I s'pose. Got more'n a few scratches need time t'heal.
Tumblr media
Y'know politeness ain't in my nature. I didn't mean nothin' by not askin'. I'll try and mind my manners next time, 好?
First of all, Simon’s done his fair share of helpin’ protect me. I can protect myself, too. After that 狗屁 with Early, I learned to - t’fight. As best I can, anyhow. I’m glad you’re safe, like I said. But I spent the better part of five months prayin’ you’d come back - and you’re here. I ain’t got much else to say to you at this point.
We are family, though. Us, all of us on the Serenity. It’s been peaceful ‘round here. And with you back, I’m hopin’ things stay that way. On account of Mal, and Simon, all of us. Maybe once it all settles down, when we hit port, I might come out to a bar with you n’ the crew.
But till then - I still ain’t sure you’re here. S’gonna take some adjustin’. But you’re alive, and home, so… I’m gonna go check out Serenity, see if the weldin’ took to her as it should have. You go lay down.
Tumblr media
You know the difference well enough, I know, but… Don’t mean it excuses politeness. I don’t even know if I can be shiny right now.

Good t'know the doc comes in handy for somethin' other than patchin' people up and tryin' t'rile me up. Though I don't think he'd a'been any good if it came to actually keepin' ya safe. The boy's a little too proper for all that, I'd guess.
I s'pose I owe ya f'keepin' my guns safe, then. Ain't many'd do that, at least not outside the ship, anyhow. Hell, I can't say I'd keep 'em, if it were me. But it's somethin' that earns a good bit of respect from me. 'Specially considerin' how long I was gone.
There ain't no need for babysittin' me, by the way. First time in years I went and slipped up, even if it was a pretty big one. I mean, if that's your way of sayin' you want t'tag along t'bars with me, that's fine. But if it's t'make sure this ain't gonna happen again, you don't have to worry.
And that ain't fair, I know the difference fine...And you never really hide how you're feelin', so I thought y'were fine.
Tumblr media
We kept gettin’ jobs, everyone was about their usual selves. A little more cautious without you backin’ ‘em up. Except Simon. He sorta relaxed more, but he took care of me.
I do hate guns still. But, I started cleanin’ em once Mal stopped. That was a few weeks after y’vanished. We was gonna sell ‘em off, but - well, we didn’t. Didn’t seem right. Not till we knew you was dead. Or you came to collect ‘em.
But, yeah, don’t do it again or I’ll gut you like a fish. I ain’t paid to babysit you, though now I’m thinkin’ that’s exactly what I was hired t’do.
There’s a difference between lookin’ fine and feelin’ fine. Not that I expect you to know the difference.

Open mouth, insert foot. Look...m'sorry. If I could go back, I'd never set foot near 'em in the first place. But I can't. And I worried about ya. Hoped y'were okay, that nothin' was goin' wrong. And I'm glad y'carried on normally without me. S'good to hear.
You were the one...Thank you. And I mean that. I know you're not the biggest fan of firearms n'such. And at least I know they were in good hands. The way you treat Serenity, I know my arsenal's been taken good care of.
And I can see you're perfectly fine, as always. I'm sure if anythin' was wrong with you, you'd let me know it.
Tumblr media
We waited for you t’come back. Must’ve been a week of sittin’, Mal checkin’ in with contacts, tryin’ to find you. Wasn’t like we expected you to get into trouble you couldn’t handle goin’ off with a lady after a few drinks. You do that often enough. No demands got made, no responses - nothin’. We couldn’t just sit and wait, neither. Jobs needed t’be finished.
I took care of y’damn guns. You’re welcome. I figured I could stand to learn a bit, in case we got boarded, or somebody came and tried to - just in case. One man down and all. Never fired one, though. They’re fine.
I’m fine, too, by the by. Not that you’ve even made a motion to ask me ‘bout how I am. 混蛋.

Now me leavin' Vera shoulda been your first clue I was comin' back. I don't leave her behind, ever. Hell, that'd be like me leavin' my...Never mind.  And I know y'ain't my mom. It just don't sit well with me that y'think I'd up and abandon this ship.
Wait, you...我会是神该死. You kept 'em up for me. Who was it did the actual work of takin' 'em apart and whatnot? I'd imagine Mal or Zoe, seein' as they've done it before. Wash didn't do anything, did he?
Tumblr media
A few people said you’d left up n’ left for good. Said you found better money, or a shinier ship. All Sorts of 屁话. Seein’ as you left Vera and your hat and…  And I ain’t your mother, or Mal, and I’m not here t’kick your head in.
All your guns’re still workin’. We kept ‘em cleaned in case - in case y’decided you wanted to come back. Mal kept bellyachin’ about findin’ a new hired gun, but never hired somebody t’replace you and - I’m talkin’ too much, ain’t I?

"God, Jayne! What're you --" Wash suddenly changes his mind and starts arranging dinosaurs on the sleeping Jayne's face.
Jayne grumbled, swatting at his face as he slept. “Gorramn bugs are huge here,” he muttered as he dreamed of jobs he’d done in the past.
