I recently discovered Mattel put out a non-Barbie fashion doll in 1979, called Starr. I believe Starr and friends were super focused on being a teenage doll line as Barbie of this era was definitely more of an adult/career girl character.
Check out the awesome late 70s styling on this doll box (I was planning to remove this doll and accessories from the box but when it arrived it was in such good shape I changed my mind -I’ll need to find a deboxed doll for restoration I think):
This version even came with a life size ‘Disco Purse’ 🙂
The box also shows what accessories are inside, and Starr’s friends (which were the other dolls in the line):
The doll itself is super cute, the outfit looks ready for the roller rink:
