Monster Chronicles: Teaser/Snippet
This may or may not show up in the book I'm currently working on. Enjoy!. Elena leaned back against the seat, the turbulence rocking the cabin. Oliver had extended another invitation to join him, this time in Alaska. A species of Griffin resided in the Chena River area, and Elena had quickly accepted. Elena had taken a liking to the Scottish field researcher, and likewise in Oliver's case. She had been on a few trips with him already to other locations where Griffins inhabited. Her personal favorite was the Antarctic White-Heralds. Elena opened the packet she had gotten from Oliver. A map was included, detailing the location of the campsite. Elena flipped through the pages, stopping at a blurry photo. If you didn't know what you were looking for, the animal in the photo looked like an oversized chipmunk. The B.C.I did extremely well in turning the public eye away from creature sightings. The small wings of the creature weren't even visible. Elena turned her gaze to the window, seeing the vast snowy region below. The airstrip stood out against the white background as the small plane touched down. Elena zipped up her red parka, the cold already leaking into the plane. She pulled her hair up into a bun, and slipped the hat over her head. Elena grabbed her satchel bag from the overhead compartment. Making sure she had her camera and notepad first, she stepped off of the plane. The cold air buffeted her cheeks, prompting her to zip the coat up farther. "Elena Rhodes?", a man called out. She turned to see a park ranger standing next to a land rover. "Yeah, Ranger Berkeley?", she asked. "Yes, Ma'am. Oliver Callaghan called ahead. Said the B.C.I was sending another field researcher", he said. Berkeley opened the passenger side, and Elena climbed in. "You know Oliver?", she asked when Berkeley hopped in. "Yep. For a few years now. And I'm aware of the B.C.I as well", he replied. "So you know about the things that go bump in the night?", Elena asked jokingly. "Some, not all. I don't ask too many questions, I just stick to what resides in the state", Berkeley said. The land rover turned onto a pathway leading into the forest. If you didn't truly know what you were looking for, any creature looked like an average species. But as Elena stared out the window, her eyes fixed onto a small animal scampering along the branches of a pine tree. "Hey, can you stop here?", Elena asked. Berkeley footed the brake and Elena hopped out, her camera already in hand. Elena spotted the animal again, up higher in the tree this time. The Alaskan Black-Foot picked at a pinecone, extricating the seeds from inside. The small Griffin looked almost exactly like a chipmunk, save for a few differences. A beak instead of a snout, tiny wings along it's back and talons instead of paws. Elena pointed the camera up and snapped off a few photos. The Griffin's tail was lined with fur, but brown feathers adorned the end. The Black-Foot leapt off the branch and soared off further into the woods. Elena smiled, scanning through the images as she returned to the rover. The trail winded alongside next to a river for a few miles before the campsite could be seen. Berkeley pulled the rover up to the site and Elena jumped out. Slinging her satchel across her shoulders, Oliver's voice sounded from the camp. "The lovely Elena Rhodes. Glad you could make it". Elena smiled and turned her attention to him. Oliver had grown his hair out since the last time she'd seen him, and facial hair lined his jaw. "For this, anytime. Beats the hell out of studying Sasquatches", Elena replied. Oliver came up next to her, and nudged her playfully. Elena grinned and nudged him back. Berkeley pulled away from the camp and disappeared down the trail. Elena followed Oliver to the tent he had set up for her. "First thing in the morning, we'll head out. Across the river, there's a ridge overlook. A flock of the Black-Foots like to roost there. The mosquitos are picking up again, you'll see quite a few of the little guys", Oliver said. "Can't wait", Elena said. She set her things inside the tent, and sat in front of the fire. Oliver pulled out a few cage traps from the bed of his pick-up and set them onto the ground. "What are those for?", Elena asked. "Higher ups want dna samples. Unfortunately, going to have to stick a few with needles", Oliver said. Elena frowned, "Of course they do", she muttered. "I don't like it much either, love. But we only need at least one", Oliver said. He plopped down onto the ground next to her. "Besides, I pity Leighton and his crew. DNA samples from a Garou were his assignment. A new pack up near Alert, tip of Canada", he said. "You almost ended up on that expedition, by the way. Did you a favor, love", Oliver said. Elena smiled, "Oh, my hero", she said. Oliver laughed and handed her a small container. "Probably hungry after the long flight from Maine", he said. Elena took the container, "Yes, thank you", she said. Inside was a few sliced vegetables and some trail mix. Elena finished it all and watched the sun sink behind the horizon. "We should turn in soon. It's two miles to the ridge. We leave at first light", Oliver said, patting her knee. Oliver crawled into his tent and zipped the flap behind him. Elena fell asleep in hers some time later. She awoke to find Oliver packing his bag with gear. The sun barely had risen again when he handed her a pack. "We've got a long trek ahead of us. Make sure you have enough power left in your camera. Oh, and you'll need these", Oliver said. He handed Elena a thick pair of gloves. "You might have to hold one or two of them", Oliver said. Elena didn't know which was more exciting, being up close to dozens of them, or getting to hold one. The two researchers made their way up a snow covered trail towards the ridge. Oliver helped Elena over fallen trees or other obstacles when need be. It took an hour and a half before Oliver stopped Elena. "You can hear them from all the way down here", Oliver said, smiling. Elena closed her eyes and listened. Chirping sounds came from high upon the ridge. The pine tree branches were alive with activity. Oliver took Elena's hand and led her over to a pile of rocks. The elevated position gave Elena clear view of the river. Clouds of mosquitos congested the air along the banks. Dozens of Black-Foots descended from the surrounding trees straight through the clouds. Oliver set up the cage traps near the bank while Elena snapped off photo after photo. Oliver returned and sat next to Elena. Elena must've taken a few dozen photos before Oliver's attention was pulled back to the cages. No sooner had Oliver climbed off the rock, a loud screeching sound filled the air. Oliver crouched down, and gestured for Elena to do the same. He quickly released the Black-Foots from the cages and made his way back behind the rocks. Oliver kept a trained eye on something in the sky, but Elena couldn't see anything. A few minutes later however, a large blue shape swooped down onto the bank. The Black-Foots had all disappeared from the area. Oliver gasped at the new arrival. It was a Griffin, but Elena didn't recognize the species. It was about as tall as Elena and was covered in dark blue feathers. The under belly and legs were covered in grey-white fur, and its tail was lined with brighter blue fur, tipped with feathers of the same color. The Griffin had similar appearances to a Blue Jay. "I don't recognize it from the Index, what is it?", Elena whispered. Oliver's face was broke out in a huge grin. "You wanted a treat, Elena. Well, you've damn well got it. That's a Siberian Blue-Tail", he whispered back. "Are they rare?", Elena asked. "Elena, they were thought to be extinct 150 years ago", Oliver said. Elena's eyes widened and she raised her camera. No way in hell was she missing this opportunity. The Blue-Tail didn't have tufted ears like the other species she'd seen. The head had a crest of feathers at the back. The Griffin waded into the water, and stood stock still. It reminded her of a heron waiting for prey. In a flash of movement, its head shot down below the surface. A large salmon was in its beak when it resurfaced. "Its accustomed to fishing, amazing", Oliver said. He carefully made his way off the rock and towards the Griffin. "Be careful", Elena whispered. Oliver walked closer to the Griffin as it tore into the fish. The Griffin froze and tilted its head towards Oliver. The tail rose up and the feathers fanned out. The Griffin let out a low chirping/barking sound, like a warning. Oliver knew exactly how to handle these creatures, and Elena watched on. Oliver raised his hand and crouched, making himself less intimidating. The Blue-Tail fanned its wings out, and Elena quickly snapped a photo. Oliver got within a few feet of it and stopped, his hand still outstretched. The Blue-Tail's wings were still unfurled and it flapped them down, sending snow every which way. Oliver didn't flinch or back up. The Griffin call resounded again, but quieter this time. Its wings lowered and brushed against the ground. Oliver stepped forward a few more paces, and Elena held her breath. The Griffin lowered its head against Oliver's hand. He stood up and ran a hand down its neck. Elena took a few more photos of the scene. Oliver gestured for Elena to come over. "Slowly, love", he said. The Blue-Tail's black eyes focused on Elena as she climbed off the rock. She made her way over, carefully avoiding stones so she didn't trip. Oliver reached out and took Elena's hand. He rested it against the Griffin's forehead. Elena kept it there and started laughing with joy. Oliver carefully pulled out a tiny set of clippers. He snipped off a feather near its tail, without alerting the creature. "We've just made a huge scientific discovery, love", Oliver said with a laugh. Elena raised her camera to take another picture this close up, but the battery died. The audible whirring sound made the Griffin tilt its head and fly off the ground, spooked. They watched as the magnificent beast soared off into the sky. "Amazing", Oliver said. He held up the blue feather he had taken. "I'll have to speak with the Alaskan B.C.I team. Get this species on the protected index", Oliver said. "Once I get back, I can get these developed. I'll help in anyway I can", Elena said. "We've got to get back as soon as possible. Lot of work to do, love", Oliver said. With that, the two researchers headed back to their campsite.
