Jey wondered, as he leaned in to the movement of Yuma knocking a knuckle playfully against his shoulder, whether Yuma was aware the affect he had.

That easy and bashful delight, and those eyes which could shame the dazzle of pirate jewels, turned to the horizon while the wind mussed Yuma's hair until the older male's fingers flexed jealously.

That smile made it feel like your heart was getting cut in half by morning light.

Longing

You create from longing. It is the overwhelming desire for what remains out of reach that defines your work. You are someone who is always wanting for something. The endless craving gnaws at you to the point that it would consume your every thought if you couldn't find a way to let it out. The nagging sense of lacking drives you to create, to give your desires an audience so that they do not devour you from the inside out. Creating something from your desires makes the sense of emptiness less acute. It's a way of obtaining some measure of fulfillment in spite of the constant craving for more. As long as you can create, an outlet for your longing is the one thing you can't be denied.

“Your bargain drives about as hard as your self control, sweetheart." He settled back on his feet and chuckled gently. “But alright, it's a deal.”

Jey dropped his head back to think for a moment, bangs wisping over his eyes from the gravity. “Once, in what I guess was some attempt to flirt, your father spun in a circle a few times to show off. Twirled, more like. Within the first ten minutes of meeting the guy. I don’t think he regrets it, but he sure gets embarrassed about it now.”

"Another time - shortly after revival - he made a complete ass of himself and Astral by proxy, when during a trip out into our world’s city to assist some refuged denizens affected by the war, Mist made a loud and sarcastic announcement of their arrival. Said that their “saviors” were here, that kind of thing. He had not taken the tone of the room first. Incredibly funny, but damn was it apparently awkward. And somehow Astral was called ‘nurse’ during that? I’m a bit sketchy on those details…”

So Jey’s whole deal is; Despite hailing from Astral World and being obligated to participate in their favor during the war ﹣ he’s actually the Son of Balance. His father, Protos, (the Heart of Astral World, as some called) was the guardian/overseer of the harmony between Chaos and Order. Before shit hit the fan in every conceivable way lmfao On top of that, Jey’s just.. a rogue and a rapscallion ahsgdhjs It’s literally in his soul makeup. He was created in equal Chaotic Energy and Pure Energy. That balance is intermittently tied throughout him, it isn’t just his “belief” or “opinion”. He is the Son of Balance. Even Jey himself isn’t fully aware of how ingrained it is. But he can’t fathom that obliterating all Chaos is the answer, there’s something in his bones defying it. And it’s a big plot point in his story that he starts to feel divided from the main crew because of this. Not Yuma﹣ Yuma is the only one backing Jey up at all ﹣but Astral. And it’s Astral’s rejection (spawned from the envoy's own rigid ideals and mission) that hurts Jey enough to push him out of the group for a brief period. ✨breakup arc woes✨

. . . And this is how and when Mist finds him. They make an alarming well fit duo. Their personalities mesh, and they do surprisingly? Okay? To avoid overt toxicity in their alliance? Mist doesn’t get preached at to change, or to “join a side of the war”, or be force locked in his card, so he tolerates having Jey around. And obviously Jey can’t be affected by Mist’s number influence, and he's naturally domineering enough to counteract when Mist gets too... himself lmao. Jey has a Robin Hood type of suave and charm, because it’s his personality. Whereas Mist acts increasingly seductive and invades people’s space because he wants to intimidate. He knows how to beat Mist at his own game, which both intrigues and aggravates the Number. Like two people who know one another via a friend-of-a-friend, and go on this epic journey and end up unconventionally thick as thieves like halfway through the movie. ASDFGH

Mist likes Jey’s assertive exterior and darker side - the viability to resort to vicious methods despite supposed loyalty to the world of “pure” ideals. Jey is pulled in by respects Mist’s unapologetic “take me or leave me” nature and his recognition of the hypocrisy regarding the war from both ends. And ofc the Number's unique brand of effortless beauty and free-bird, unaffiliated presence. Those two tend to, pretty universally, have a quick chemistry and natural connection. [ It’s also thanks to that natural connection that a certain lightbulb gets his first experiences dealing with an ‘unknown’ and green-eyed emotion. 😉 ] Also also, fun fact - if it could not already be told by these answers lol - These two are my second highest OTP, right after Goldenship (Jey x Astral /JeiAsu) ! I call them Pierceshipping. Since they have a lot of piercing qualities (particularly their affinity for bedroom-eyed stares and smirks) And because they each canonically stab someone through the chest.

But TLDR; For a lot of the same reasons already listed here, Jey and him do not get along. Can’t always do much ‘bout it tho cause that’s their technical boss, gotta play civil or else Jey and boifren don’t get as many missions together :(

So one of Jey’s abilities — being the Son of Balance, and direct descendant of Astral World’s guardian and overseer of the harmony between Chaos and Order (both which had a hand in his genetic and soul makeup) — Is to “reach” inside an individual's soul, and regulate, stabilize, or even change, the levels of Chaos to Order energy within that person. An example being; if a Number 96 had again fallen to the power of Barian Force or “too much Chaos”, Jey could reach in and settle the energy in a way that allowed 96 to retain control of themselves, and disallowed the chaos from overwhelming them to a point of insanity or personality shift. Keep the new power, lose the corruption downsides of it, basically. Jey has already debated approaching the corrupted Astral to offer this service for him. Both as an honest helpfulness of power or energy stability, should he need it.. But also.. as an excuse to approach and start conversation, given as Jey has been watching him with some amount of interest since his arrival.
