The Vancouver Sun’s Adopt-A-School program has sent $567,328 to 94 schools throughout the province this year
The money has come from readers of this newspaper concerned that poverty is preventing children from receiving an effective education as a consequence of hunger and privation.
Among this year’s donors was the Montalbano family who gave $15,000 to Vancouver’s Queen Alexandra elementary for its Fill The Gaps program.
Fill The Gaps provides food for the in-between weekends.
“We can’t turn our eyes away from people in need,” said John Montalbano who with his wife, Dana and two sons, Luke, 12, and Marco, 11, visited the school at 1300 East Broadway to discuss with principal Megan Davies how best to help.

B.C Election: Clark’s Alternative Facts
Christy Clark also lied about the NDP, Christy Clark claimed the NDP never balanced the budget, that`s just another lie from Christy Clark..Christy Clark said..
"When the Government changed hands in 2001 it took several years to turn things around to balanced budget" That`s a lie, the BC NDP left a $1.6 billion dollar surplus for Gordon Campbell in 2001, there was nothing to turn around, Gordo and Christy took that surplus in 2001, they gave corporations huge tax cuts and proceeded to run a deficit of over $2 billion dollars the following year..
Christy knew Bill Good was right, that demonstrated how willing Christy Clark is to lie her face off..

Filling Diveristy Gaps by John Montalbano
In his piece for the globe and mail, John highlights that this is the perfect time to review and introduce key action items, such as: pay equity (merit and experience should be the key differentiators); diversity targets for board appointments, external recruitment and internal promotions (or similarly a commitment to principles consistent with those introduced by Catalyst Canada, an advocacy organization dedicated to progress for women through workplace inclusion); mentorship programs aimed at building experience and exposure for high performers in mid-management positions where diversity pools are generally deep; campus recruitment programs that reflect local demographics and that of the emerging work force; removal of the stigma of paternity leave, and synchronization of maternity benefits in the United States to those offered in Canada; and introduction of mandatory programs for all senior executives, addressing conscious and unconscious biases.

An alternate route to the NHL
Some of the best young players who will soon be in the NHL spent this past month writing college exams in the United States.
The established road to hockey success for Canadian teenagers has always been the major-junior leagues across the country. But an alternative route has quietly gained ground, one that runs through the National Collegiate Athletic Association. On this path, aspiring teens in Canada play Junior A hockey – long considered second-tier – before collegiate hockey and a possible career in the NHL.

Lions' Adam Bighill signs with New Orleans Saints
Adam Bighill, son of Long Beach resident Andy Bighill, has just signed a three-year futures contract to play football for the New Orleans Saints. For the past six seasons Bighill has played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the BC Lions.
At age 28, it was getting close to “now or never” time for Bighill if he was to realize his dream of playing in the National Football League. Through contract negotiations, Bighill was allowed a window to sign with an NFL team. With the window scheduled to close on Jan. 27, Bighill signed with the Saints on Jan. 4. His futures contract is basically identical to a standard NFL active-roster contract, with the same salary structure and signing bonus. It takes effect in March.
The late John Didion, a Naselle resident and Pacific County sheriff, played for the Saints and the Washington Redskins from 1969 to 1974.

Paul Ryan says GOP will defund Planned Parenthood
During a news conference on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said the process to dismantle Obamacare will include stripping all federal funding for Planned Parenthood, but he did not provide much further detail.
His remarks come two days after a Republican-led House investigative panel released a report that recommended the health care provider be defunded. The investigative panel—created to examine allegations that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal tissue for profit—was then disbanded, because it was not reauthorized for a new Congress. Planned Parenthood was never found guilty of any wrongdoing at the state or federal level, despite multiple GOP-led investigations.

Animal Shelter Celebrates When All Of Its Dogs Are Adopted In Time For Christmas
There’s plenty of holiday cheer at a Colorado animal shelter after it found new forever homes for every single dog in its kennels last week.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, a non-profit shelter in Colorado Springs, managed to clear out its dog kennel two days in a row. The shelter was able to waive the usual adoption fees for dogs and cats over 5 years old thanks to the help of some generous donors, KOAA reports.
“We’ve adopted out 25 cats and 23 dogs so far during our #HomefortheHolidays promotion, and for the second day in a row, we’ve adopted out ALL of our available dogs!” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.

Google Trips: Your Personal Travel Planner
Google today is launching a new mobile application, aimed at helping you better plan your vacations and other travels. Called Google Trips, the iOS and Android app pulls in a combination of data from Google Maps and crowdsourced contributions from other travelers, in order to offer a personalized travel guide that helps you keep track of your day trips, reservations, points of interest, tourist attractions, restaurants and more.
But the app isn’t just for collecting information – it can also make suggestions. Google says Trips can show you the most popular day plans and itineraries for the top 200 cities worldwide. This information is actually based on historic visit data from other travelers, which Google has then assembled into lists that include the most popular sights and attractions.

Not Cool Justin Trudeau
So everyone loves Justin Trudeau the new prime minister of Canada, right?
He was elected into office last year around this time and has been kind of rock star on the world stage. He is a young and charismatic guy... with great hair and all that.
But I was just told that he just gave the greenlight to a new project called the Pacific NorthWest LNG that will end up destroying our rainforests and our oceans.
Not cool Justin!
