I sat next to the protest today.

I wrote fan-fiction about two gay jewish dads raising children to the play list of the chant- "No peace on stolen land!" on an American college campus. It isn't a name brand one either, nor does it have any legitimate ties to Israel. The anger is just there- it has rotten these future doctors, nurses, teachers, and members of society.

I don't even know what to call their demonstration- it was a tizzy of a Jew hatred affair. At points, there were empathetic statements about Gazans and their suffering. Then outright support of Hamas and violent resistance against all colonizers. Then this bizarre fixation on antisemitism while explaining the globalists are behind everything.

"Antisemitism doesn't exist. Not in the modern day," A professor gloated over a microphone in front of the library. "It's a weaponized concept, that's prevents us from getting actual places- ignore anyone who tells you otherwise."

"How can we be antisemitic?" A pasty white girl wearing a red Jordanian keffiyeh gloats five minutes later. "Palestinians are the actual semites."

"there is only one solution!" The crowd of over 50 students and faculty cried, over and over.

"Been there, done that," I thought, then added a reference to a mezuza in the fourth paragraph.

Two other Jewish students passed where I was parked out, hunching and trying to be as innocuous as possible. We laughed together at my predicament, where I am willingly hearing this bullshit and feeling so amused by this.

"Am I crazy? For sitting here?" I asked them. My friends shook their heads.

"We did the same last week- it's an amazing experience, isn't it?”

We all cackled hysterically again. They left to study for finals. Two minutes later, I learned from the current speaker that “Zionism” is behind everything bad in this world.

Forty-five minutes in, a boy I recognized joined me on my lonely bench. He came from a very secular Jewish family and had joined Hillel recently to learn more about his culture. His first Seder was two nights ago.

He sat next to me, heavy like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. There was just this despondent look on his face. I couldn’t describe it anyone else, but just sheer hopelessness personified.

“They hate us. I can’t believe how much they hate us.” He said in greeting.

And for the first time all day, I had no snarky response or glib. All I could do was stare out into the crowd, and sigh.

So I know it’s been this way for six months now, and this isn’t exactly new news, but the fact that people have unironically said they believe the intentional mass murder of Jewish civilians, including children, isn’t antisemitism is so fucking scary.

Like. There’s really no coming back from that, is there?

What it comes down to is two things: firstly, people don’t know what it actually means to read and think critically. They think it just means rejecting any mainstream, professional sources in favor of fringe and/or unchecked sources. Not only is rejecting all professional news outlets and believing everything you see on social media not thinking critically, it opens you up to conspiratorial thinking.

Secondly, people just don’t want to fucking read. They want the brownie points for showing their peers how Aware they are without putting in the time to become informed about anything, ever, let alone complicated geopolitics. These are the same people who won’t read a Wikipedia article or scroll down past the third result on Google. They want people to dumb everything down for them by injecting gross simplifications and misinformation directly into their brains through short videos that they don’t have to pay attention to for more than a minute. That’s why they so vehemently defend that short-form video app, because then they’ll have to choose between actually reading something, or not getting the brownie points anymore, since they no longer know what’s going on.

It’s anti-intellectual bullshit to refuse to read up on the issues you scream about, but you’re not entitled to people taking your takes on a topic seriously when you refuse to read anything about it that’s longer than two paragraphs.

I can’t get over how the students at Columbia screamed “Go back to Poland” to American Jews. Not even Israelis (though that wouldn’t be okay either). American fucking Jews.

Way to tell me that you don’t want me in your country and think my family and I would be better off dead. You’re such an activist, gleefully screaming for the ethnic cleansing of your country’s own populations.

For those who missed it, a Jewish man was threatened with arrest in London this weekend for being "openly Jewish" (that's a quote form the policeman who stopped him) while being near a pro-palestinian protest. He was then abused and harassed by protestors. The policeman said that the man's presence could lead to a "breach of the peace"

The police proceeded to release the most victim blamey apology I've ever seen - one so bad that they then had to withdraw it and issue a second apology

The original apology talks about a "new trend of those opposed to the main protests appearing alongside the route to express their views", and "knowing their presence is provocative".

The guy the police stopped was literally walking in London post shul. Not on a counter demonstration, not on a free the hostages demo, or a pro Israel demo. He was just there, and wearing a kippah.

Like I'm sorry but saying Jews being obviously Jewish is causing a breach of the peace when near a pro-palestinian protest makes it very clear that the police know that these are not actually peaceful.

I'm sure a huge number of people on these demos are not actually antisemites and have no intention to harm Jews, however herd mentality can make even the most reasonable person into a bigot, and frankly if people are afraid to stand against the antisemites, it shows that they now how dangerous the people around them are - so WHY are they still there?

I NEVER said “Judaism encourages being sneaky and deceitful”. You KNOW this because you appropriately only quoted half that sentence and used the word “implied”.

I was answering someone who had asked why Christians were so triggered by things like the eruv and Shabbat lamp. There are VERY good reasons to be critical of those practices just like there are good reasons to be critical of certain aspects of ANY religion. And yes, those practices ARE sneaky and deceitful, at least in the minds of other believers, which is what I made very clear in my response.

Perhaps you’re one of the millions of people who has bought into the false notion that to criticism any aspect of Judaism in any way is off limits or inherently hateful. I used to be one of those people, but no longer. People/societies/religions become out of control and extremely dangerous when they’re above criticism.

The brutal genocide Israel is getting away with in Gaza while calling everyone antisemitic who rightly criticizes them is a direct result of the same thinking that you’ve internalized.

When you are questioning if something’s antisemitic, ask yourself if you’d be equally as offended and worried if this was something someone said about Christianity or Islam. 99/100 you’ll find that your discomfort stems from society training us to feel more than comfortable, even righteous, in criticizing other religions, but to interpret any criticism of Jews or Judaism as hateful and completely unacceptable.

my biggest gripe with the pro palestinian movement is the lying. you can have empathy and feel remorse for gazans without lying and peddling every antisemetic trope in the book

you can realise that palestinian arabs did not kindly welcome jews who made aliyah before and after the shoah, they are not indigenous or the canaanites, they have been violent against israelis and jews, a lot of them do support hamas, the nakba was a war started by palestinians that they lost to israel, the palestinian national identity is reactionary to the israeli national identity, palestinians are not genetically distinct grom other arabs in the middle east, palestine is literally a colonial name given to the land by the romans to mock the jews living there to sever our connection to the land and STILL have empathy for palestinians. you can realise that they arent a perfect innocent victim and still have empathy for them. the source of their suffering isnt israel or jews, its the antisemitic and imperialistic goals of islamist leaders AND STILL.
