AMANDA  HAS  A  VISITOR.  and  she  knows  who  it  is,  because  who  else  would  come  to  visit  her?  not  her  mom:  she’d  visited  at  first,  pleading  with  amanda  to  tell  her  that  it  wasn’t  true,  that  she  didn’t  murder  that  poor  man,  but  amanda  had  stared  at  her  blankly  until  she  got  tired  and  left.  her  therapist  has  been  saying  that  amanda  should  try  to  reconnect,  but  she  doesn’t  see  the  point.  they  weren’t  connected  very  much  in  the  first  place.

and  she’s  right.  there’s  lily,  sitting  in  the  visitation  room  with  its  pastel,  plastic  tables  and  chairs.  amanda  feels  the  absurd  urge  to  smile.  she  hadn’t  seen  lily  since  the  trial,  when  she’d  lied  so  prettily  to  the  entire  room.  amanda  had  just  sat  there  and  looked  deranged.  it  wasn’t  hard.  she  hadn’t  brushed  her  hair  that  day.  amanda  takes  a  seat,  after  the  guards  make  sure  she  isn’t  going  to  lunge  for  lily’s  throat  or  anything.  she  speaks  first.  she’s  always  been  the  one  speaking  first,  why  change  that  now?
