The importance of education in Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji’s admission interview and Geto Suguru
There’s a consistent emphasis on the role of education in JJK that makes itself known at the very beginning of the story, but with implications that are only fully realized in retrospect. Yuji’s entrance interview is an illustrative example of this when considered alongside Geto’s arc as a student.
That is, I wonder if the way Geto’s strict principles turned into destructive ideological extremism is the reason for Yaga’s admissions interview for new students, in order to see if they are prepared for having their good intentions challenged by the harsh realities of being a sorcerer.
Surely it would’ve made a difference if, at Geto’s admission interview, an educator had identified & challenged the limits to his motivations in the same way that Yaga pointed out the limits to Yuji’s reasonings and pressured him to realize a more sustainable motivation.
If it’s the duty of the strong to protect the weak, what are you going to do with the fact that the weak are sometimes able to oppress the strong? When ordinary people mistreat and abuse young jujutsu sorcerers, would you still feel obliged to protect those people? These are the important questions that someone knowledgeable should have asked Geto in a safe, educational environment to work through these ideas.
Geto had fundamentally needed an adult to put pressure on his ideals similarly to how Yaga, with his retrospective insight, didn’t hesitate to say the harsh reality to Yuji that, with unsustainable motivations, Yuji could end up cursing his own grandfather.
With Yuji, this interview didn’t entirely eliminate using his grandfather’s wish as a contributing motivation to become a sorcerer. But by having it destabilized early on, Yuji proves flexible in adapting even beyond where his promise to his grandfather reached its limits. He had the foundations preparing - and warning - him for this reality when his initial ideals would be complicated.
Whereas, it’s likely that Geto had never been faced with serious intellectual or practical challenges for his motivations until seeing the ignorance and cruelty of the star vessel association. No educator seemed to have helped prepare him for the ideological flexibility needed to keep going.
So again, in retrospect, Yaga’s interview with Yuji was immensely important in its contrast to the absence of any adult guidance during Geto’s school days. It is even unknown if there even was an admissions interview at all when Geto was an incoming. I wouldn’t be surprised if Yaga himself created the requirement for this kind of interview/screening when he became principal in response to his failures as a teacher to help guide Geto.
