Marvin let out the tiniest of snickers at Vivian's comment about Derrax, thinking that Anti probably would've liked and agreed with that one. And honestly, it was kind of true. Even so, Marvin could barely get himself to look at Vi as the next question was asked, any trace of a smile wiped clean from his features. This was one of the questions he was dreading answering, because it meant diving into his past.
"They didn't just find out, they're the ones that put it there..." Marvin responded quietly, fiddling with the shirt in his lap. "I was abandoned as a baby and, as the story goes, I was found on the streets by Derrax and some of his men. They sensed that I had magic energy so they took me in and saw it as an opportunity to put the seal on me, so the magic would grow as I did. I was raised into their organization - the Black Magic Market - and um..."
Marvin sighed, a hand coming up to rub some tension from his neck. His fingers trailed over some of the marking at the base, but his gaze remained toward his lap. He didn't want to see the possible disappointment on Vi's face.
"A-Anyway, I... was one of them for many years - until my early twenties, to be exact. I became a well-known criminal around here by the name of Black Cat," Marvin continued to explain, reaching up to take his mask off. He held it in his hands for a moment, looking it over before setting it down on the bed between the two of them. "Jackie and I crossed each other a lot back then... I would sometimes be stealing food to try and live, other times I was stealing from museums and stuff for the BMM. But I was one of them, so they assumed that I would just continue to grow within their ranks and eventually, they would just unlock the seal..."
Marvin fell quiet after that, one hand reaching up to trace part of one of the scars along his cheekbone. To think Derrax was so close to Vi, that he could've done something like this to him with one swipe of his hand... It unsettled him immensely.

It was the third day since Vi was missing. He hadn't shown up to his shifts with Chase, which was reason alone to be concerned - especially because he didn't reach out to warn anyone of his absence. Knowing the kind of things Vi did after hours, it made Marvin worry. He tried not to overthink it too much but also kept an eye out for his younger friend as he went about his day. It wasn't until a member of the BMM directly approached Marvin and told him what happened that the mage finally clued in.
Vi was at the BMM hideout, being held hostage.
Marvin moved as quickly as he possibly could, trying to come up with a plan to get his friend out without risking them both dying. He couldn't take on every other mage in the hideout on his own, so the only other option was to walk right in as one of them. As much as he hated doing it Marvin didn't see any other option. So he pulled out his old black cat mask and made his way over.
While this all took place, Vi was being held in the basement of the hideout, a group of mages keeping watch over him to make sure he didn't try anything. They had him shackled to a big metal chair and were threatening him if he tried to escape. A few punches had been thrown already, but one mage in particular seemed to be wanting more.
"Can't believe he's hangin' out with a kid like this. He thinks he can run off and have a normal life? What a joke," the mage scoffed, flipping a dagger in his hand and pointing the tip at Vi's neck. "What's so special about you anyway, huh? I could snap you like a toothpick."

Marvin walked over to the bedroom with Vi, closing the door behind them and letting his friend get comfortable however he wanted to. He moved to sit across from him on the bed, a feeling of dread beginning to creep up on him. Just as he had suspected, he was sort of regretting his decision to tell Vivian everything, but he also knew that it was the right thing to do. The kid deserved to know the truth.
Hearing that he wasn't like the others at all made Marvin give a small, slightly sad smile. He wanted to believe that so badly, but he was scared that Vi's opinion on that might change once this conversation was over. How could he be so different when he used to be them?
"Right, um, well..." Marvin took in a slow breath, deciding to take this one bit at a time. If Vi wanted history, then he would give it, but the question was about why they wanted him. Too much information at once might make it hard to follow or just overwhelm him, and that was the last thing Marvin wanted to do. "The reason they want me so badly is because I have this... this very powerful dark energy inside of me. It's being kept at bay with this seal that I have on my back."
Marvin pulled his shirt over his head, wincing just a tad at the strain on his injuries, and then turned so his back was facing Vi. Going about halfway down his spine from the base of his neck were what looked like tattoos, rings with different magical symbols and sigils inside.
"This is very old and dark magic that is forbidden because of how dangerous it can be if it's in the wrong hands. Think of it as residual energy from an extremely powerful entity. If someone knows the right incantation and unlocks the seal, the magic inside of me will be set free and just... consume me, essentially. And it will only respond to the person who unlocked the seal..." Marvin explained, turning back around and looking at the shirt he now held in his hands. "They want me because they want this power... to turn me into a weapon, completely under their control - or Derrax, specifically, who's the boss you saw earlier..."

"Vi, you've been through a lot, the last thing you need to do is worry about me..." Marvin stated softly, not wanting his friend to push himself. He had just been kidnapped and held hostage for about three days, he needed to focus on himself. "Y-You need to eat and drink and rest... I can do it, don't worry. You've gone through more than enough for my sake."
The last part came out as more of a murmur to himself, but he let it go to help Vi up. He stayed next to the other as they walked, wanting to be there to help or catch him if needed. However, as Vi stopped to face him, Marvin did as well. What he heard made him press his lips together and avert his gaze to the ground.
"I... I know... I've been running from them for a long time now and they still haven't caught me. But it.... it's a lot, I know. You never should've been involved Vi. None of this had anything to do with you and I-... I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve any of that," Marvin began, his chest tightening as images from earlier flashed through his mind; the fear in Vi's eyes, the heartbreak when Marvin pretended to be one of them, the panic and the screaming...
"Let's just... let's get comfortable upstairs. I'll answer any questions you have, just like I said," the mage then stated quietly, continuing to lead the way up to his bedroom.

Marvin finished healing Vi's leg, pulling back and inspecting it just to make sure he hadn't missed anything. He then looked up, inspecting Vi's face for a few moments and seeing where he had been punched. It made the mage frown, wanting to heal those as well. However, before he could ask about it, Vivian spoke up and made his expression soften.
"Yeah, of course, we can hang there," Marvin nodded before looking down at himself. There were a few scrapes on his knees, but most were on his arms. He seemed a little sheepish as he inspected them. Some were pretty easy to see since his entire sleeve was gone. "I, uh... wish I could heal myself, but I can't. I'll just patch them up later, or maybe when we're upstairs... Henrik can take a look at them later."
They weren't all that worried about their own wounds since none of them were that severe. Instead, they pushed themselves up to stand and held a hand out for Vi to take, wanting to make sure he was still okay getting around on his own now that his leg was healed.
"I promise you're safe, though, alright? They're far away now, and neither of us are gonna get hurt now," Marvin assured softly, hoping to at least ease a bit of Vi's worries.

Marvin didn't think about his own injuries since they were fairly minor in comparison to what Vi had. He instead focused on helping his friend, making the board disappear once they stepped off. He then guided Vi inside and helped him settle on the couch before making his way to the kitchen, getting a tall glass of water and a protein bar. He doubted the BMM had done much to feed or hydrate him, and he didn't want to upset his stomach to get upset.
Once he got both things, Marvin came back and held them out to Vi. He then sat down next to him and carefully undid the sleeve that was tied around his leg so that he could access the wound, then began healing it.
Marvin was quiet for the most part, knowing that his friend must be in shock. He could see him taking everything in and didn't want to rush him. There was also the weight of guilt pressing down on him, knowing he was the reason Vi was captured in the first place. It was a side of himself he didn't want his younger friend to really know about, and now he really didn't know what Vi would think of him when this was all over. Was he going to lose the only real friend he made outside of the guys?
"Let me know if you need anything, okay? Pillow, sweater, a nap... we have the guest room, o-or even my room if you're more comfortable with that," Marvin proposed quietly as he healed Vi, not looking at him purely so he could focus on tbe healing.

Marvin grabbed Vivian and pulled him onto the board, holding him tight and using the magic to keep his feet secured to the board, just like his own. He then rushed out between the trees and into the sky, the voices of the guards yelling becoming smaller until they disappeared completely.
After a bit, things seemed almost peaceful. They were soaring across the sky and nothing could be heard except the wind blowing past them. Marvin took in a slow breath, then exhaled in the same manner. That was stressful, even for him. A few close calls, to say the least. He could only imagine how freaked out Vi must feel.
"We're almost home... just hang in a little longer," he said softly.
Once the house was within view, Marvin swooped down to the front door and stopped the board just a few inches above ground. He then stepped off, holding his hand out for Vi to take so he could support him while going into the house.
"I'll get you some water and a protein bar, then I'll heal your leg. We'll just set you down on the couch," he instructed, speaking much more quietly now that they were out of that horrible environment.

Marvin followed Vi through the tunnel, heart hammering against his ribcage. They were so close to making it out without being spotted, he could only hope that they would make it home this way as well.
Once Vi crawled out of the tunnel, Marvin followed and used magic to place the rock back over the hole. Last time he did this, it was in the dead of night, so there were less chances of being spotted. However, they were in broad daylight now. And it seemed like the universe wasn't making that easy for them, Vi's voice being heard by some guards that were patroling the grounds. Marvin ducked toward the ground, placing a hand over Vi's mouth and keeping a watchful eye.
Unfortunately, it was too late. The sound of Vi's voice, on top of Marvin's dark clothing against the green of the bushes and trees around them, seemed to blow their cover.
"They're on the move!" One guard yelled. "Get them!"
"Dammit! Okay, Vi, you stay right there. I'll be right back," Marvin said in a hushed tone before rushing out towards the two guards that were headed their way.
Magic was being thrown back and forth, spells shot in every direction as Marvin dodged blows and deflected them with his own. It was almost like he became a cat with his agility, pouncing left and right and almost always landing on his feet. The guards were skilled but Marvin's goal wasn't to kill them, it was just to knock them down long enough to get away. So, after a few close calls and some nasty scrapes from sliding on pavement, Marvin managed to pin them down with a spell, giving him an opening. More guards began to rush out the front door but the mage didn't stick around do try and fight them, instead summoning his hoverboard and rushing towards Vi.
"Take my hand and get on, quick! We gotta go now!" He called out, reaching his hand out for his friend.

"Okay, good," Marvin nodded to himself, continuing to search along the wall. When he seemed to find what he was looking for, he stopped and kept his finger over it. "It's still here..."
With the help of his magic, Marvin was able to pull out a chunk of the wall. It wasn't very big, just enough for someone to crawl through, and it seemed to lead to an underground tunnel. The piece of concrete wall was placed carefully on the ground, trying not to make a sound.
"Alright, you go in first. It's a one-way tunnel that goes several feet straight ahead. The exit is covered by a big heavy rock but I'll use my magic to move it," Marvin stated, making his way over to Vi to help him up and guide him towards the tunnel, then helping to lower him to the ground so he could crawl. "I need to shut the entrance behind us but I'll be coming right behind you."
Marvin waited for Vi to start crawling before crouching down and following behind, using his magic to help him place the chunk of wall back in place. It fit perfectly, almost like it was never broken to begin with. He kept his magic going, acting as a light source as they crawled, and then to move the big rock at the top of their exit.

While Marvin wanted to just hold Vi close and apologize until he ran out of breath, they couldn't stop to do that right now. That made him go into his automatic escape mode because the moment he let himself really feel his emotions, he wouldn't be able to focus. That would mess everything up.
Marvin gave Vi the time to adjust and stand up, quickly wrapping an arm around his friend's waist and holding one arm around his shoulders to keep him up. They would move a little slower, but that was okay. They just had to time things right.
"Alright, here goes nothing..." Marvin murmured.
He walked Vi to the other side of the room across from the staircase where there was another doorway, leading into a long hallway of rooms where members slept. Thankfully, it was mid-day, so the chances of anyone being in that area were slim. After opening the door, Marvin continued to support Vi as they slowly made it down the hallway, the magician glancing around at any sound.
"Alright, almost there..." he encouraged as they got closer to the end of the hall. Once they reached one specific door, Marvin pressed his ear to it and made sure no one was inside. It seemed to be empty, so he opened the door to reveal a vacant room with a small bed for one person and a bedside table. "Good, doesn't look like anyone's staying here. Should go smoothly from here."
Marvin brought Vi into the room and then set him on the bed for the moment. He had to open the secret exit with both hands.
"We're going to have to crawl a little bit. Think you can do that?" He asked, walking towards the corner of the room and sliding his hand against the wall, almost as if he was looking for something.

Marvin was honestly afraid to look at Vi again now that the two of them were alone. He had scared his friend and put him in so much danger - he wouldn't be surprised if Vi was pissed at him after this. So he was quiet, letting Vi have his moment and completely understanding all the confusion that was expressed. However, towards the end, he finally got himself to look his friend in the eye.
"We are absolutely not staying here. I'm getting you home as quickly as possible - and yes... I-I'm still me... I promise," he assured, that seeming to have snapped him out of it. He needed to move quickly. However, one look at Vi's leg told Marvin that there was still risk of bleeding out if they came across some complications, so he decided to address that first. "I-It's a lot to explain, and we don't really have the luxury of time right now. Let's just focus on getting out of here first, okay? Questions can come later - and I promise I will answer every single one honestly."
Okay, maybe he would regret that later, but dammit, Vi deserved to know. Besides, there wasn't much point in trying to hide the horrible, blatant reality of things.
Marvin reached up for his shirt sleeve, gripping the seam and using his magic to help him rip it off. He then crouched in front of Vi and slid the detached sleeve under his leg.
"I'm going to wrap this to try and slow the bleeding. It's going to hurt, I'm sorry," he warned before wrapping it around the wound and tying it tightly enough to reduce the blood pouring out. He then immediately moved onto the shackles that were keeping Vi tied to the chair, using his magic to rapidly unlock each one. "There's a room down the hall from here where there's a secret exit. If we can get out from there without getting spotted, we're home free. This will require you to walk, but I'll help support you until we make it outside."

Marvin glanced briefly at Vi as he heard his name and, once again, his heart seemed to sink into his stomach. Curse these damned magic fuckers. He hated them - every single one, and Derrax most of all. He wished he could send him some sort of signal that things would be okay, that he would get them out safely, but he couldn't risk it. However, he did notice the way Vi seemed to look at the wall rather than Derrax, which made a horrible realization settle in Marvin's mind.
The spirits. There must be so many spirits here because of all the people the BMM killed... even more of a reason to get Vi out as quickly as possible.
"I must say, I'm impressed. You seem to have switched on a dime," Derrax pointed out calmly, walking towards Marvin and Vi. He stopped when he stood in front of the other mage, looking him over briefly. "What made you decide to come back?"
"I realized that I can't run from what I am... I serve a purpose here, I'm needed here, and that's something I will never find out there," Marvin stated, gesturing vaguely towards the world outside the hideout. "I can play pretend all I want, try to make friends and form a family... but I will never truly be a part of that life. It just wasn't meant for me..."
While these were really just words to try and sound convincing to Derrax, they stemmed from a place deep within Marvin's heart. They were fears, worries, anxieties, the dark thoughts they had of not fitting in or someday losing everything they had. The fact that they had come from somewhere inside of him made them more believable.
"That's right... I'm glad you finally understand. You don't belong out there, boy. You were raised to be a weapon for us - not everyone gets that opportunity," Derrax stated with a sadistic grin, reaching over and gripping Marvin's shoulder. He had to try not to flinch at the contact, failing but just barely. "We have a lot of work to catch up on. I expect a lot from you. Don't disappoint me - you know what happens when you do..."
"Yes, Boss... I won't disappoint you," Marvin responded emotionlessly.
Derrax seemed satisfied, pulling his hand back and beginning to walk back towards the stairs.
"We start tomorrow. Go and find yourself a room in the meantime," he said before disappearing up to the main floor, leaving Vi with Marvin who now stared blankly at the wall.

When there was no reaction at first, Marvin was a little bit worried. Did Vi not get what the look meant? Shit, this could turn bad really quickly. He should've figured something else out. This shouldn't rest on Vi's shoulders, what was he thinking!? The kid had so much to work through already-
And then Vi began to cry. God, it broke Marvin's heart so much to see, especially knowing that he was part of the reason his friend was so panicked. But at the same time, this gave Vi the chance to let it out and make the act look believable. So Marvin pushed through the overwhelming urges to comfort his friend and continued simply pushing magic out, hoping that this was enough to convince the others.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Marvin kept going until it seemed like Vi had gotten a lot of it out, though he also didn't want the other to ruin his throat with the screaming. So he gradually let the magic flow come to a stop, the green tendrils retreating into his palm before disappearing completely. He then glanced over his shoulder towards the others, though he was mainly waiting for the approval of the boss.
"How interesting... the rest of you, leave. I want a moment with him," Derrax stated, waving the others off. They left without complaint, leaving the three of them alone.

It was killing Marvin inside to not be able to help Vi. It made the mage want to scream, though he was already beating himself up inside for not stopping this from ever happening in the first place. Vi didn't belong here. God, he was just a college kid. He should be worrying about exams and what grades he got on a test, not whether he would live to see another day.
"Had a change of heart, have you, boy?" Came a deeper voice from the stairway. A deep chuckle resonated as another figure entered the room, smirking at Marvin.
It made a chill go down the mage's spine but he resisted every urge in his body to grab Vi and run. He had to keep this up... just long enough for them to let their guard down.
"I'm not sure I'm convinced. Why don't you prove yourself? Hurt him. If he means so little to you, I'm sure it wouldn't be that bad. After all, you've hurt countless others before. He would just be another number," Derrax then demanded, gesturing towards Vi.
Marvin felt his chest tighten but externally remained unchanged. He uncrosses his arms and gave Derrax a dead look.
"Yes, Boss..." he replied monotonously before turning towards Vi.
He didn't want to hurt his friend... he really didn't. Maybe he could just fake it? Yeah, make it look like he was doing something. It seemed so cruel, but Vi looked like he was on the verge of a panic attack. The others wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So, with his back to the others, Marvin let his eyes speak the truth for a split second as he looked at the other in the chair.
Please don't hate me for this, Vi. I'm trying to help, I swear.
Marvin then extended his hand, dark green wisps extending from his palm and flowing towards Vi. They went straight into his chest, but really, they were harmless. All he would feel was a light tickle at most.
