The Nature of Photographs
Photographs can be view as a print that capture beautiful and meaningful moment in life. Sometimes it can be a simple and familiar object, a landscape like a bridge, a tree, or a flower, or a woman, or a man. Through the lenses we view the world different since our eyes can’t see it as the lenses see. We discover the world through this “eye” and want to send it to other viewers to let them see the beautiful world like photographers see. In fact, a photographic print is a base of paper, plastic, or mental that has been coated with an emulsion of light-sensitive metallic salts, or directly with dye, pigments, or carbon. The print has a physical dimension. These physical and chemical attributes the boundaries that circumscribe the nature of photograph; it also determines the quality of the print. The type of base determines the texture of the print. Colour is another level that helps photographer add a new level of descriptive information on their images. It shows the lights, hue, and saturation on the print. The black-and-white print is affected by the type of emulsion the print is made with. There are many sources that determine the way show, mid tones, and highlight that are described about the print like composition, chemistry, print developers.

Passage
Tumblr media
To me, passage means time passing. i always feel that time pass really fast and there is no way that us, human can hold or catch any second of time. That’s why treasuring every moment and second in life is important. The photo above is the moment the light shine through a tree. To me i feel that moment is so peaceful and relax. It always gives me the sign that after the bad day, the new day is coming.

Nagasaki Journey Archive: The Photographs of Yosuke Yamahata: https://mopa.org/exhibitions/nagasakijourney/#
Yosuke Yamahata is a Japanese military photographer. This series is the photos about the War World II when America dropped atomic bomb on Nagasaki city. The sudden attack left the huge damage for the city. Everything almost destroyed. Many people lost house, their beloved, and assets. In the photo above, this is the demonstration of the devastation. Many people were injured and suffered with it. Kids lost parents. Adults suffered on losing everything. They were lying on the floor and crying without what they have to do. I think the photographers did good job on capture on the emotion of the citizens.

Envision Solitude by Vicky Stromee. https://griffinmuseum.org/show/envisioning-solitude/
Vicky Stromee is fascinated with photography at an early age. Her father is an amateur photographer, and her mother is a painter and pianist. She got the master’s degree in counseling at the University of Arizona in 1976. After retiring her job in counseling, she found interest and spent time in photographing natural subjects. Her work with a close-up lens reflects a unique eye for composition and form. Envisioning Solitude is the work that she mainly about moon with different patterns on it. “ I seek out close-up view of known objects to reveal patterns of color, texture and form, then capture these images and layer them together to create objects of meditation on that transformation process.” Moon is the symbol of love, desire, dreaming, and especial it relative with the women image.

Final Portfolio
For this portfolio, I do a concept about women and flower. To me, I always feel that women is always the gender that closest with nature. They are in loved and given the chance to be shine more any genders. There have been many artworks about women and flowers talking about their beauty. Hence, I want to focus and combine these to elements together.
The process of doing this project quite take me a lot of time of retake photos since the weather these days aren’t goods. The model is actually me as well, since none of my friends nor family members want to be in camera. I set self-timer to take pictures of myself and this is the most struggle part of my project. The light isn’t nice, wrong angles, hard to set a position to take photos of myself are obstacles. Then I just edit my photos and then work on it on the Photoshop.
The artist that inspiring me on working this project is Elle Hanley. Elle Hanley is a self-taught American Fine Art photographer currently living and working in Seattle. Her work is alluring and unexpected focusing mainly on capturing beauty and emotion in a still shot of time. Elle enjoys the challenges in creating something classic and timeless from a thoroughly modern process and the contradiction between the two is a strong theme throughout her work.

Another work of Taylor is Woman Holding Horse which was made in 2003. A woman holding the horse in her left hand while her right hand is holding a little purple umbrella that covers the horse from her tear. The most interesting in the photo is that the woman's tear is actually the rain. This picture gives a lot of meaning when viewers first see it. The pose of the horse isn’t the real horse, it looks like a merry-go-round horse. This is the symbol of the children since kids love riding on it. The color of the umbrella is purple, and purple stands for dreaming. Hence, I think that the meaning behind this photo is that the woman tries to protect her children from the struggle and obstacles that the rude world has given. No matter what happens to her, but as a mother, she does her best to protect her kids, and let her children live happily.

One of Taylor's famous works is Through the Looking-Glass World, a series bases on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Looking at the photos can tell that her work perfectly matches the description and vision of the author of Alice’s in Wonderland’s World. Her composition is juxtapositions of her photo, scanned objects that including antique toys, and old tintypes, arranged in Photoshop into vivid. The images appear to be culled from dreamscapes. The figure of Alice is made with short hair in her dress. The clear image of the Rabbit drinking tea, and the image of the Egg sitting on the wall talking to Alice. Each image leads audiences to the distinct scene of the story and each easier for them to memorize and follow the flow of the story. Like the others work, Taylor painted the background first then she looks for an old vintage photo in small stores and online. After finding the right pictures she wants, Taylor scans them and arranges all the elements to create the masterpiece.

Video Art
Video art became an excitingly immediate medium for artist after it was introduced in early 1960s by a Korean artist, Nam June Paik. Paik recorded the video of sitting on the traffic, and presented the grainy, barely edited result later. In the 1963 Fluxus exhibition at Galerie Parnass in Paris, Paik showed his first reworked television sculpture which were the very first of video art. After 1965, he wrote a short manifesto encouraging other artists to try using video as a tool for empowerment the new art movement. It provides the cheap way of recording and representation through a dynamic new avenue, shattering an art world where forms such as painting, photography, and sculpture. This expands the potential of individual creative voice and challenged artist to stretch toward the new plateaus in artists’ careers. However, the video art started noticing in the 1970s and were represented by many American practitioners such as John Baldessari, Joan Jonas, and Bruce Nauman. Video art was also the tool for the activism arose in the 1970 as well. It allowed for documentation which to some activist offered an opportunity to prove the injustice they sought to change. These days, as the rapid and strong development of technology that it allows artist from various movements to expand their existing toolkit and get their diverse ideas across in unprecedentedly immediate way. It also create the opportunity for artists to try on many techniques that they never done before. I’m Huyen Tran, a senior majoring in Production and Design at UTD. I’m in this class because I love taking photo even though I'm not good at it. I want to learn techniques and more skills in photography by using DSLR camera. I always think that the world is more beautiful every single second pass, but it’s hard to keep those beautiful moments. Hence, taking photo and keep it for myself is one of reason i taking this class.
