Ultimate Way to Choose Your Strand
Tumblr media
Be pragmatic. Be realistic. Be practical. In a world with high taxes and bills, get a course that would land you a high-paying job. That is what people would say.
For some, they have their dreams from when they were still kids. Their dreams do not change. As they grow older, they still want to become a doctor, an artist, a teacher or whatever it is that they wanted to be. Their dreams are consistent. They are the lucky ones who realized their vocation. They are the lucky ones who do not have to struggle in choosing the path they want to take for themselves and their future.
For some, they have their dreams that are just not as consistent as the lucky ones. Their dreams change through time as they experience different things, find different passions and explore activities they love to do. They are probably the adventurous ones—not unlucky,  since they have their dreams. They do not struggle in choosing, for at one point, they have something they want to do.
For some, they have their dreams—their constant dream as a child—but unapproved by the people around them. It could be their parents, sisters or brothers, any relatives or just anybody in general. In the end, when the time to choose comes, they still choose between two or more paths—are they going to do what they want to do? Or be practical and follow what the elders say? They are the lucky ones who had also realized their passion and vocation, but are not lucky enough to pursue that passion.
For some, they really do not know what their dream is. They cannot find their passion. They are the unlucky ones. When the time comes to choose, they face hardships in finding the path they want to take for their future.
For some, like her, it is a plethora of certainties and doubts. She had different dreams growing up; she was finding different passions. She was not supported in her dreams and then she did not know what to do in the end.
That “she” is me. I grew up wanting to become a dentist, then it changed to being an actress, then to a chef, and in fourth grade, I wanted to be a businesswoman. I never considered my skills and strengths when I chose to become a businesswoman. All I know was that I was passionate about helping the poor. I often watched news that featured businessmen and businesswomen helping the poor and the unfortunate. I wanted to do that and I thought making money out of a business will be the easiest way to do it.
The time came when I had to choose. I was in my last year of junior high school and my eyes were set on Accountancy, Business, and Management. I will become a businesswoman. I guess I was not lucky enough to pursue that path. However, I will still pursue my passion. Helping other people does not just include making money and then using it to build a better future for them. I researched and researched the other choices. HUMSS or Humanities and Social Sciences includes social work. I can still help and that is why I chose to be a HUMSS student. My skills fit, my passion fits; I fit in it.
During the two years I have been under it, I had finally realized what I wanted. I was a bit unlucky at some point. Social work drew me into the strand, but I did not see myself as a social worker. Culture, language, people—I love studying these. It may have taken long for me to realize the real path that I want to take, but I am not unlucky, as I chose the right strand. I may not heard what my heart wanted to say at the beginning but here I am now, following the right track.
That “she” is me and I never hated anyone for hindering me to pursue what I used to like. That “she” is me and I do not regret being a HUMSS student. That “she” is me, and “she” will soon be a diplomat—I will become a diplomat, a person who will help and can protect each Filipino’s human rights outside the country.
So how does one really choose a career?
It is not by being pragmatic. It is not really by being practical. We can consider those things, but it is our life and we are the ones that will live it. Being practical does not mean being happy. Being practical does not mean doing what you love and enjoy.
Do not live the dreams of other people for you. Follow your heart and when it does not say anything yet, wait for it. The signals are just not clearly sent. Do not rush things. Eventually, the wait will be fruitful with the path that your heart would love. When the time to choose comes, trust yourself—trust your choice and decision—and trust the process. It will guide you to the path that will make you happy.
She did it. I did it, and so can you.

‘Di kami HUMSS lang!
Tumblr media
“Ano strand mo?”
“HUMSS po.”
“Ahh, HUMSS lang pala.”
The Humanities and Social Sciences strand has always been taken for granted. Whenever people ask me what strand I took for my senior high school education, I could see the disappointment on their faces as I utter the word “HUMSS”. They seem to think that I am a wasted potential because I chose to become a HUMSS student. My answer? No, Humanities and Social Sciences is not a strand for people who are undecided and looking for easier workloads. I, as a HUMSS student, want to change these negative, belittling notions. I chose to become a HUMSS student because I want to serve for the society. I want to serve for the country; and I would bet that I’m not the only HUMSS student that holds these sentiments.
        HUMSS strand is not easy.
No strand is easy. The activities that we do may seem easy for other people but it takes us a lot of time before we accomplish the tasks. Almost every day, we do our writings in many subjects and there are times that we experience writers’ block or having no words to say.
Moreover, writing also comes with reading. Sometimes, our subject teachers give us reading materials and I tell you, they consist of many pages. However, because of these materials, we learn a lot and learn to appreciate the value of reading. Furthermore, there are so many terms and concepts to remember. Deep understanding and critical thinking are required for us to understand these difficult concepts.
HUMSS strand helps us become informed citizens.
We become aware of the current state of affairs and become opinionated about these issues. We become familiar with the happenings in the Philippine national government and its foreign affairs. The blood in our veins scream for change and our Filipino spirit awakens every time we hear outright unprofessional statements that our government leaders say; and worse, the sight of blatant misdeeds that they do.
HUMSS strand makes us understand things through different perspectives.
We become open-minded people. We become exposed to things that may not be acceptable for other people. We learn different cultures and at the same time, we learn to accept and appreciate them. We become capable of seeing things through different lenses.
Personally, the HUMSS shaped me and is still shaping me into a person who is ready for the future. I realized that the HUMSS strand may become the most interesting among all the strands, but we also have to remember that we have our own aspirations and passions. All strands require students to improve and excel as preparations for their future careers.
I hope with all the points that I have mentioned, it will make you realize that no strand is better than other strands.
“‘Di kami HUMSS lang!” because we are the future lawyers, journalists, teachers, diplomats, government leaders and many more. We are considered as the foundation of the society. We are the social scientists that will face and solve the future problems of the society.
Tumblr media
“HUMSS lang naman yan madali lang dyan.”
“Sa amin, yung may mga mababang mark napunta sa HUMSS.”
“Ahh HUMSS ka?”
Such statements imply a stereotype that the Humanities and Social Sciences Strand is for the people who chose the easy way to graduate. It is not seen as an in-demand academic path and is perceived to be mostly about reading and writing. Well, they are not entirely wrong about that. However, as a HUMSS student I can tell you this strand offers way more opportunities than some people thought of it.
Here are 3 reasons that can prove how the Humanities and Social Sciences Strand is as worthy to be respected as the other strands.
1. Advocates action backed by knowledge.
Being ignorant can hardly be tolerated in the HUMSS strand because we are always encouraged to voice out our own opinions and ideas. We are beckoned to be deeply involved to the happenings in the society to increase our knowledge to its inner workings. We are being trained and sharpened to be active and responsible young citizens. We are not just enclosed inside the four walls of our classroom. Instead, our mentors allow us to be exposed to the condition of our country. They encourage us to be part of its development by being informed, by creating projects valuable in helping the society, and most of all, by standing against injustices. We are being trained and sharpened to be active and responsible young Filipino citizens.
2. Promotes deep perspectives of matters.
HUMSS encourages students to not only look at the surface, but to reach a deeper understanding about the concepts and issues of the country. We are tasked to think beyond the already perceived comprehensions and share new knowledge that comes from our own understanding. It enhances critical thinking and one’s communication skills as these attributes are vital in this globally competitive generation.
3. Helps an individual to understand himself/herself more.
We are humans; this is where the Humanities and Social Sciences focuses on. It gives utmost importance on human behavior, their capabilities, and development; thus, enabling us to better understand ourselves.
We must remove the mindset that “this strand is better than this strand”. Academic strands are not a means to promote competition and judgment among students. Rather, they exist to expose students to the environment of their chosen field. Choosing a strand must be based on one’s interest and passion; not on pressure or rankings.
As a graduating senior high school student from the Humanities and Social Sciences strand, I know and feel that HUMSS will always have a very special place in my heart.  It has been a place for my progress and development as a person and as a young Filipino student with big dreams for herself and especially for her fellow citizens.

I reached my goal of reading 10 books this year, only noticing after my 11th!
The 11th, which was “Our Bloody Pearl” by @brynwrites !!
It was really really good, I couldn’t put it down reading it in class, at night, during the morning, when my friends and family were trying to talk to me…
The main characters are so realistic, flawed and well written they really pull you in (much like Perle’s song!)
The softness of Perle and DeJean’s relationship alongside the intensity of the plot is so perfect.
I seriously recommend everyone read this!
Ps: it’s got diversityyyy
