“That’s my seat, has been all year.” This potions exam was likely to melt his brain if the practical section didn’t do it first. But he was ready to set his pewter cauldron down where he always would. The only ounce of confidence in his voice coming in the knowledge of whom Peter was addressing. “Can you move, yeah?” @hxlfbloodprince

Of all the arseholes in Gryffindor, Severus was perhaps least intimidated by Peter Pettigrew. “Not anymore,” he said without looking up from his book, already opened to that day’s lesson. “No,” he answered firmly. One classmate had taken it upon themselves to move seats that morning, which acted as a catalyst to a domino effect of a number of seats, including Sev’s and now Peter’s, being pre-occupied. Severus wasn’t happy about the change, either. “You don’t own this seat.”

hilde:
“Ohhh… Shit. Shit, shit, shit. Out of the way!” Hilde couldn’t believe she’d spent so long writing that damned essay for Transfiguration, only to lose the piece of parchment. McGonagall was going to kill her. Her parents would admonish her for being careless if they cared enough to write to her. She pushed past a bunch of first years who were too slow to see the impending doom. “Hey! Hey, have you seen a transfiguration essay? About this long and really important?”

One first year bumped into another, and that first year bumped into Severus, who sighed irritably at the attack. “No,” he snapped, and turned around to narrow his eyes at the source of the commotion.
Tumblr media
He stiffened only slightly at the sight of one of Lily’s dormmates. Before last year, he had always tried to at least pretend to be nice to the girl’s friends. It was easier to be friendly with Hilde than it had been with Mary, though she didn’t set the bar particularly high. “This isn’t the Lost and Found. Perhaps you should be more careful with your essays,” he advised. Then, a moment passed, and he chewed on the inner part of his lower lip. “Do you have time to rewrite it?”

lily:
She watched him roll his eyes at the mention of Mulciber and nearly screamed in frustration. How could he not see what was right in front of him? How could he not see the horrible things that his friends got up to? He had to be blind to it somehow, because the alternative was that he saw and approved, and Lily just couldn’t stomach that idea. She couldn’t believe that he knew what his mates were planning on doing after school, and was fine with it, or even worse was planning to participate in it, She couldn’t reconcile the boy she had known nearly half her life with the pure evil she knew others like Mulicber and Bellatrix to be.
“You don’t get to do that,” she said, her voice deadly calm. “You don’t get to rewrite history like that. I always defended you, even when you weren’t around to see it, which is a lot more than I’m sure you can say for yourself.” She could only imagine the things they said about her in the Slytherin Common Room, could only imagine Severus’s silence.  “You can’t seriously be comparing practical jokes and hexes in the corridors to torture and cold-blooded murder! That’s the difference between our friends Severus, and if you can’t see that, you’re either blind or complacent or both.”
She let out a bitter laugh and said coldly, “That’s what you’re not getting, Severus. The loss of our friendship had nothing to do with James Potter and everything to do with the choices we both made. And for the record, throwing our friendship away? That was your call, when you chose them over me. They want me dead, Severus. How can you not see that?” She took a deep breath. “Or maybe you do. Maybe you just don’t care. Either way, it doesn’t make any difference. It’s like I told you. You’ve chosen your way, and I’ve chosen mine.”
She flushed in anger and embarrassment at his next comments, furious on her own behalf, but more so on James’s, that Severus would do him such a disservice. “Because that’s the only way a Pureblood like him could have any interest in me, right? Believe it or not, he doesn’t give a damn about all that blood purity nonsense. And I’m not talking about James with you. You don’t know anything about him.”
Tumblr media
.
Severus let out a huff of laughter at the end of her speech, though the laughter held no humor or amusement. “You think they want you dead?” He repeated. “For Christ’s sake, Lily, you’re so...” He shook his head. Though many words came to mind ― convoluted, dramatic, sensitive ― he didn’t dare to mutter any further insults. His anger kept him anchored in the conversation, albeit as it began to fade to defeat, it no longer blinded his true feelings for the girl. He hated fighting with Lily. Even if she chose to never forgive him, yelling at her or insulting her didn’t heal the pain of a lost friendship.
I’m sorry, he wanted to say, and mean it. He wanted to confess to her that he had fallen into terrible things, to ask for her help to change his ways before it was too late, to promise not to talk to his current “friends” anymore, but he didn’t. He couldn’t. He couldn’t admit that he was wrong ― couldn’t form the words in his head, let alone stomach the thought of speaking them aloud. The one thing he was proud of was his intelligence, and the idea of admitting a mistake felt too much like sacrificing his self-respect. What if he admitted he was wrong and it wasn’t enough? What if she went back to her dorm that night and laughed at him with her friends, fabricating a story of how he pleaded for her forgiveness just to have her turn him down?
“That’s not what I meant,” he hissed, irritated at the way she so easily twisted his words into something he had never said, would never say. “You don’t get to make up stories about me, either. I know James is an arse, and all his mates are arses. We’re not sharing a cup of tea over the summer. That’s all I need to know.”
Tumblr media
He had come to the conclusion moments ago that the conversation wouldn’t be a productive one, that their friendship was too far gone to be recovered. Yet, he couldn’t will himself to be the one to walk away first. He refused.

She watched his move closely in an attempt to anticipate his following one, “He is a fool, the fact he still is allowed to teach is an extreme oversight on the part of the administration.” She said levelly, as she made her next move expertly. “I know what he believes are the correct answers so i put those in order to get my O, whether they are right or not is irrelevant because those worthy will know the truth.” She said
“With a headmaster as old as Dumbledore, there’s expected to be some oversight,” Severus agreed. He clicked his tongue at her move.
Tumblr media
“That’s a peculiar way to take an exam,” he remarked. He glanced at her oddly, then back at the chess board. His pieces were neglected, however. “Do you believe it’s best to live life that way, as well? Saying things because you believe others want to hear, rather than saying what you truly believe?”

bellatrix:
Bellatrix took great pleasure is creating havoc. If she could create havoc and blame someone, else well that was even greater. Poor Little Severus Snape should probably have stayed well away from her. Because he was the perfect prey for her. And she took a lot of advantange of it. She had came out to find him today. Which was annoying, but he liked being on his own, so she wasn’t going to blame him. Not today anyway.
“Oh. How boring. When did you get boring Snape?” She asked, a little smirk on her face. She just raised an eyebrow a grinned at him. “I have a little job for you”
Tumblr media
.
“I hardly consider getting good marks boring,” he countered, a significant lack of conviction in his tone. He raised a brow at her. “How are your exams going, I wonder?”
Tumblr media
Severus’ stomach had been trained to ache whenever Bellatrix grinned at him like that, as it certainly meant that she was up to something wicked; and even worse, that she wished to include him in it. He squinted at her. “I don’t think I want to know what it is.” He looked over his shoulder, longing for the safe isolation of the library, and looked back at her. “What kind of job?”

SEVERUS SNAPE SULKED by his lonesome in the library, which wasn’t unusual for the boy. He was surrounded by an ocean of books, yet the particular one he searched for was unavailable, already checked out by another student according to Madam Pince.
It took many minutes practicing what he would say and playing out the resulting conversation in his head before he stood from his seat to approach the other student. He saw the book he needed on the table before them, and looked at it quietly for a moment, then asked irritably, “Are you going to return that book today, or do you plan on hoarding it through the summer, too?”

SEVERUS SNAPE SWORE that the analysis of stars was the greatest waste of time and energy that Hogwarts had to offer. Yet, sometimes, when he was feeling especially lonely, it was comforting to look to the stars above and think that he was no greater than a mere speck in a large galaxy; and sometimes, when he was feeling especially self-loathing, it was comforting to blame his behavior on an abstract label given to those born in January.

Severus took a deep breath and let it go in a dramatic sigh of annoyance. “I don’t know anything about the attack. You should talk to Mulciber himself if you want answers,” he advised. It occurred to him afterwards that he shouldn’t encourage the girl to seek out her attacker, as he didn’t know what Mulciber was capable of. It wasn’t the first time nor would it be the last that the boy asked himself if his words were truly his, or those of his housemates. “I’m... sorry that happened,” he said lowly. “But I wasn’t there. I wasn’t involved.” Tell that to Lily, would you?

lily:
Lily scoffed. “Of course you don’t. You don’t think I’m a mudblood, because I’m special, right? I’m different from all the other useless muggleborns polluting the wizarding race that you and your friends rant about all the time. Save it,” she snapped. “I don’t want to hear it. I’m no better or worse than any other witch or wizard here, and neither are you, and neither is Bellatrix Black, pure as her blood may be.” She turned away from him, ready to storm away.
At his next words, however, she whipped around so fast she nearly gave herself whiplash. “Don’t you dare,” she snarled at him, face flushed with fury. “When you started messing around with the Dark Arts, I stood by you, even though my friends warned me against it. When you befriended those wannabe Death Eaters, I stood by you, because they were your housemates, and I told myself it was only natural. When you defended Mulciber, Mulciber, who attacked my friend, I stood by you!” There were tears glistening in her eyes now, but she refused to let them fall. “I never once faltered in my loyalty to you, and how did you repay me? By humiliating me in front of half the school, and taking up with people who want to see me dead!”
Shaking her head furiously, she snapped, “Go ahead, blame Potter for the choices you made. I let you get away with that for far too long, and I won’t do it anymore. You’re responsible for your own actions. And, by the way, Potter? He’s never once treated me as anything less than brilliant and deserving to be here. He’s never avoided my greeting in front of his friends or pretended he didn’t see me when his housemates were looking his way. That was all you, Severus. So even if James Potter really was the arrogant, bullying toerag I once believed him to be? He’s still ten times the man you are, because at least he’s not a coward!”
Tumblr media
.
With a great huff, Severus rolled his eyes at the mention of Mulciber. How long would he have to spend answering for another person’s crimes? His whole life, apparently, or so it seemed in Lily’s eyes. He looked away at the first hint of tears ― shuffling on his feet, shoving his hands in his pockets and pulling them out again. His own cheeks were tinted pink when he looked back at her. For the first time since he’d known her, he cursed the stupid girl. He cursed her for being angry at him and then for not forgiving him. He cursed her, above all, for not understanding him as she had when they were younger. Lily knew him perhaps more than anyone else, certainly more than his housemates or his own parents. If she didn’t believe in him anymore, then how could he possibly believe in himself?
“Stood by me?” He repeated, his face crinkled. “Is that what you call it? You let them torture me for years!” He almost laughed when he accused her of humiliating her. “You were humiliated? I was hung by my ankles from a tree! Perhaps you intervened that time, but what about the times before that? Or the times after? What’s the difference between my friends and yours, really?”
Tumblr media
“I’m a coward?! You’re throwing away years of a friendship for... for some boy that you probably won’t even talk to two years from now,” he said. “He’s been pining after you for years. Obviously he’s manipulating you. He’s probably just using you.” Then, he shrugged one shoulder and added quietly, “He just wants to get in your pants...” The boy’s heart was racing, and if his hands weren’t clenched into fists, they would certainly be shaking at his sides. He hated fighting with Lily. It had taken a year for him to realize that it wasn’t simply a fight, however. It was the end. His shoulders slouched in defeat.

lily:
Lily could feel her former best friend’s stare boring into the back of her head as she laughed at another one of Professor Slughorn’s (not particularly funny) jokes. She lingered with the professor longer than she normally would have, desperate to avoid the coming conversation, but knowing that was likely impossible. Slughorn eventually left her side with a pat on the arm to go mingle with his other guests, and that was when Severus finally approached.
She decided to ignore him. He couldn’t have anything to say that she hadn’t already heard, and she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction. At his question, though, something in her snapped, and she turned to look at him, blinking in false surprise. “Oh, were you talking to me? Careful, Severus. Aren’t you worried about your new friends seeing you hanging around a filthy little mudblood like me?”
Tumblr media
.
“What? No! I don’t care about what anyone thinks, and I don’t think you’re a ―” He didn’t dare repeat the word. He hadn’t since it had escaped him that day on the castle grounds. “Lily, I am so so sorry. How many more times can I say it?” Perhaps his raising was to blame, or the fact that his current acquaintances were some of the most prideful people he had ever met, albeit begging for forgiveness wasn’t something he was accustomed to.
Tumblr media
Severus quickly glanced around, pursing his lips thoughtfully. When he looked back at Lily, his frustration was clear on his face. “Do you want to know what I think?” His heart raced painfully fast. “I think you were never interested in being my friend,” he accosted. “I think you’re holding one mistake against me so you can ditch me without looking like the bad guy. That’s why you want me to look like the bad guy. Because you know I would have never said that word if your ― your boyfriend, or whatever he is, wasn’t attacking me ― ‘

SEVERUS SNAPE SILENTLY cursed to himself as he watched the girl walk towards him. It wasn’t that he particularly disliked her company, but rather than he didn’t particularly like anyone’s company. The only reason he had ventured to the castle grounds at all was in hope that he would see Pandora there. He didn’t.
“To what do I owe the pleasure, Bellatrix?” He stood from under the tree, and dusted his pants. “If there’s a new scheme you’d like for me to be apart of, I’m afraid I’m studying in the library for the next hour.”

SEVERUS SNAPE SNARLED at the sound of continued footsteps behind him long after he left the classroom. He pulled his wand from his robes and gripped it tightly by his side. Then, when he reached the bottom of the stair case, he stopped. “If you’re going to follow someone, it may be helpful to at least try to do so quietly.”
He anticipated Potter or one of his minions. While the sight of Mary was relieving, it did little to excite him and more to confuse him. “What are you doing?” He asked. Without a mutual friend to impress, he found no reason to be polite to the girl. “If you're looking for someone to annoy, I suggest you find a different target.”

SEVERUS SNAPE STUDIED the familiar redhead from afar. He chewed the inside of his lip and scratched the slight stubble on his cheeks as he pondered how to approach her. Before last year, Lily had been the only person who he could comfortably be himself around. Now, however, the mere sight of her made his heart race. When Slughorn finally left her side, Severus hesitantly approached her.
“Hi, Lily,” he said lamely. “Are... Are you excited to return home for the summer?” As much as he hoped they could go back to being friends as though nothing had happened, he knew Lily wouldn’t allow it. He had already tried. Quieter, he asked, "Will you at least talk to me? I hate this.”
