Enough losing of poets and those who drink our health and create for us a highway to know ourselves and who must hide their love of life under the corrosive veneer of cynicism. Enough dirges for the best of us, the bright local suns who keep our feet from tripping against all too easy anger and ignorance. Bourdain, I am no one, a fan, inconsequential, a mass among masses, yet made to feel consequential and singular in the wake of your own hunger for the ancient idea of everywhere a new world and a waiting feast. We mourn you, we hold back our tears, not because we knew you, but because we knew ourselves more through you. And we weep, and chide ourselves in weeping, feeling punched in the mouth, feeling knocked over, feeling the end of you should not have come from you. And we chose today to carry for ourselves your idea that somewhere is a table waiting, with a feast on that table, and strangers there who will become friends once we sit with them and eat with them.
