adults are always talking about how “kids will do anything to get out of school” and okay, first of all that’s not true, but I think we really need to ask why that idea holds so much sway.

children’s brains are hard-wired to take in new information and acquire new skills. consider, for a moment, just how thoroughly our society had to fuck up the concept of education for it to be a normal thing to assume kids are universally desperate to avoid learning.

#And it sucks!!!! #Because I see it!!! #Those tiny little glimpses where they do get excited about learning something new! #When they understand what I'm trying to teach!! #When they get the math problem right on their own for the first time! #When they ask questions and you go off on the side tangent or look something up for them like please!!! I want you to enjoy learning #Even just a little bit #But you gotta give me something here like come on please #My boss will often tell me not to reinvent the wheel but I'm not trying to do that!! #I'm trying to re-pave the road!!! #If they don't have that foundation it doesn't matter what wheel someone gives them it's not gonna go anywhere!!!

like, can I go to work every day and earn a paycheck? yeh. Can I sustain a small circle of friends and go on a few dates every few months? pretty much. can I feed myself and get a passable amount of sleep? most the time

is my apartment absolutely littered with laundry and trash? yes as well. Have a done dishes in the last week? nope. have I been 10-30 minutes late to almost every engagement in the last year? yep. have I forgotten to shower for 4-5 days, like every other week? yeehaw 

I know people look at me and are like, ‘God, she has her shit together, God I wish I could do that,’ but I’m sitting here feeling like an anxiety disaster half-person

like, we just settle for ‘passable,’ ‘almost functional,’ ‘the bare minimum of okay’ and then it’s a constant treadmill to always be a tiny bit above the curb
