Spring has Sprung photo challenge Week 2: Theater
Rebecca Rubin is a natural on the stage. When her school puts on a performance of Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It, Rebecca plays the part of Rosalind, the brave heroine who flees to the forest after being dismissed from the king's court.
Dear Celia, I show more mirth than I am mistress of; and would you yet I were merrier? Unless you could teach me to forget a banished father, you must not learn me how to remember any extraordinary pleasure.
Costume made by me.

Spring has Sprung photo challenge Week 1: Reading
Courtney is my newest doll and I'm having so much fun with her. I couldn't resist posing her like the covers of the early Pleasant Company catalogs, with girls reading to their dolls. My Courtney has Kirsten until we obtain a mini Molly.

Week Two of Spring Has Sprung 2024: Theater!
Tumblr media
"Popular--you're gonna be popular!" 🎶
Tumblr media
"Oh Miss Elphaba--you're beautiful!" 🩷💚
Tumblr media
Kavi (daughter of Elphaba and Glinda) and Callie (niece/adopted daughter of Zeb and Kallus) met in theater class when Callie first moved to San Fransokyo to live with her uncles and cousins. After a rough outing by a teacher/coming out to her mom which led to her uncles taking custody of her, and moving all the way across the country from her birth state of Florida to California, starting a new school in the middle of the school year was just another big change Callie wasn't sure she was ready for. But almost as soon as walked into theatre class she made friends with Kavi, bonding over their love of Wicked and musicals in general! (Kavi's moms met playing Glinda and The Wicked Witch in a Broadway production of The Wizard of Oz, so she grew up in a very musical household!)
They both dream of playing Glinda and Elphaba together someday (Callie wants to be the first trans Glinda, and they both think there should be a version where Elphaba and Glinda end to together), and they love dressing up and singing the songs--they even plan to perform "Popular" at their school's musical showcase!
Tumblr media
When they're not getting ready for their next show, they like hanging out at each other's houses and listening to musical soundtracks, or going on dates to get boba tea at the Lucky Cat Cafe! 🧋

Useful Websites for Identifying AG Stuff
A Thousand Splendid Dolls - These Flickr albums have great high res photos of a ton of American Girl clothes and accessories.
AG Heaven - Almost all the illustrations from American Girl books and magazine stories. Constantly being updated.
AG Playthings.com - This site is pretty useful for the early American Girl of Today line and the older lines like Hopscotch Hill.
AG Playthings Message Board - Fun place! The reviews section is viewable even if you’re not a member. Here’s a link to the Historical Characters section.
AG Scans - Paper items from all the historical collections plus a few modern ones. Also has some assembly instructions.
American Girl Wiki - Almost every single American Girl thing. I don’t really agree with how it’s run but it is useful. The Visual Chart of the Truly Me Dolls is especially helpful.
Curt’s Complete Guide to American Girl Doll Collecting - It’s no longer complete since it hasn’t been updated in years but it’s invaluable as a resource for the early Pleasant Company and partnership with other brands products. You can also see all the Scenes and Settings Scenes.
Emily’s American Girl Dolls - Book illustration comparison, photos of the Rebecca dollhouse, Kirsten’s mini paper dolls, and scans of the short-lived Pastimes newsletter
Lissie and Lilly - Paper doll scans, a gallery of dolls dressed in various outfits, lots of doll related reference guides. Pleasant Company catalog scans posted on Flickr.

One of the cool things about the American Girl books is how they focus on the domestic side of history. Other books set during wartimes might have done plots like, "Felicity helps George Washington" or "Molly tracks down a German spy". But this series stays grounded in the daily life that was still going on amid all these big events. It focuses on the things that kids can relate to in daily life--school and holidays and birthdays--which helps sell the idea that people have always been people, even while history was happening around them.
It also has a uniquely feminine view of history--which shouldn't be a surprise in a series called American Girl, but I want to appreciate how the books, for the most part, engage with female life in those eras on their own terms. The history sections at the back might mention that girls had a harder time getting an education or had certain restrictions, but within the stories themselves, the girls aren't sitting around complaining about it. They're not lamenting how terrible it is that they don't live in our modern times, which so much historical fiction can do. They're just living their lives and even finding fulfillment. Felicity doesn't get the same education as the boys, but the skills she learns are useful in her society and she likes her lessons. Samantha gets to learn from all Cornelia's suffragette leanings, but she still wears bows and ruffles and frilly dresses instead of, like, insisting that girls should wear trousers. It presents a clear-eyed view of history that teaches kids about these eras without imposing too much of a modern, judgemental lens upon it. And that makes these books a surprisingly good intro to American history.

So here's a concept I've had in the back of my mind for a while. I was thinking: "What if AG wrote follow up books aimed at adult collectors who grew up with AG?"
The books would basically consist of the girls we already know and love and follow up on thier life all these years later. I decided to make thier new age in these hypothetical books exactly 30 years old.
It would show how they have grown, what they would be like as adults, if they have started thier own family or not, ect.
If AG were to do this I'm not sure how many characters they would include. Likely only the original 6 and maybe Kaya and Kit too. But for the sake of this post I included everyone. Here is the new dates they would represent at 30 years old:
Kaya: 1785 Felicity: 1795 Caroline: 1832 Josefina: 1845 Marie Grace and Cecile: 1873 Kirsten: 1875 Addy: 1885 Samantha: 1925 Rebecca: 1935 Claudie: 1945 Kit: 1953 Nanea: 1962 Molly: 1964 Maryellen: 1975 Melody: 1984 Julie: 1996 Courtney: 2006 Twins: 2020
Wow those last two really showed how recent thier stories are in history.
Anyway it is interesting to see how some girls dates overlap with other girls original dates.
It would very cool to see how the perspective would be different between an adult woman's eyes vs how we see it already in the original story. (for example, Kits perspective as an adult in the 50s after growing up in the depression and living through the war vs maryellens childlike view on it, or Rebecca living in NYC in the 30s, maybe as a actress vs Kit living in ohio as a child, etc)
So what do you guys think of this idea? Would you read it?
