How to become a Scientist at ISRO? | Indian Physicist
Tumblr media
Do you fancy making your living by working on stuff related to stars, planets, satellites, black holes, neutron stars, galaxies, nebulas, supernovae? Do you dream of working on constructing and researching rockets and satellites, and peek through huge professional telescopes? Then you ought to know the profession you are seeking is being a Scientist at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).
ISRO is the government space organization that ranks in the Top 5 across the World and is among the only 6 space agencies in the world with full launch capabilities. ISRO has undertaken many space missions successfully that marked India’s name in a few nations that have their own independent space program. ISRO launches various satellites, and probes into space which deploy their capabilities for a range of tasks. The organization also researches and studies the Cosmos.
ISRO hires Indian students as scientists through some rigorous procedures. This article will give you detailed information about how you can achieve your dream of becoming a Scientist at ISRO.
History and Remarkable Achievements of ISRO
ISRO was formed from its preceding agency INCOSPAR in 1969 by the Government of India’s Department of Atomic energy which was further taken under the Department of Space. Its headquarters is in Bengaluru. The annual budget of ISRO is 1.9 Billion USD (7th highest in the world).
ISRO built India’s first satellite ‘Aryabhatta’ which was launched by the Soviet Union. The first-ever rocket built by ISRO SLV-3 launched India’s satellite ‘Rohini’. ISRO subsequently developed the GSLV and the PSLV.  In 2014, ISRO used India’s first indigenously developed Cryogenic Engine in GSLV. Later ISRO’s Chandrayaan 1 mission discovered water on the moon. In 2014 India’s Mars Orbiter was set into Orbit of Mars. ISRO holds the world record of launching 104 satellites into orbit using a single rocket. Recently ISRO also launched Chandrayaan 2 which set up the Orbiter moon probe in the moon’s orbit, the Lander module of Chandrayaan, however, had a harsh landing and lost contact.
Subdomains of ISRO
ISRO has divided the Work Domain into several important Subdomains. Some Subdomains such as the Astrophysics department are responsible for the study and research on Cosmos. Other domains involve Aerospace, Propulsion systems i.e. engines, Rocket launching complex, Satellite and Artificial Intelligence, Sensors and probes, Communication and Remote sensing, Thermodynamics, etc. All the products with coordination get assembled at a station then the launch takes place.
Aerospace
In this department, the aerodynamics of rockets and spacecraft are studied and the manufacturing of the exterior of rockets, satellites, and spacecraft is done. It also studies the movement of bodies passing through the air, which is required to reduce the drag due to the atmosphere of the earth. The suitable material for the exterior of the rockets is also researched.

The most Noble thought one can ever come across is to contribute something to the Nation. DRDO that is Defence Research and Development Organisation gives you an opportunity to Utilize your Science Education, Curiosity and your Patriotism for the Empowerment of the Country. DRDO has made India self dependent in the field of Military Technology. The institution deals with the research and development in the fields of Aeronautics, Missile Systems, Artillery, Arms & Ammunitions, Electronic warfare & RADARS, Combat Vehicles like Tanks, Satellite programmes and many more important fields.
This Article will give you a detailed insight about the educational qualification and the eligibility for becoming a Scientist at DRDO, the exam required to pass for joining DRDO as a Scientist, the Advantages of being a DRDO scientist, etc.
History & Achievements of DRDO
DRDO has proved to be the most promising organisation of government of India. DRDO Comes under the Ministry of Defence, established in 1958 in order to strengthen India’s own Defence Technologies. Its headquarters are situated in Delhi.
DRDO has made India self-sufficient or rather placed India in the list of top contenders for the next global superpower. The missile program of India IGMDP is a project of DRDO which has developed a varied range of Missiles through the last few decades. Short Range Ballistic missiles like Prithvi series and the Long range type Ballistic missiles series of Agni are the products of IGMDP. IGMDP has also developed cruise missiles like BRAHMOS which is a joint-project of Russia and India. DRDO has also developed Air-to-air, Air-to-surface, surface-to-air, types of missiles.
The Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, a range of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) , the notable one being the RUSTOM military drone, and electronic warfare systems like AEW&CS (early warning control systems) are some of the achievements of the Aerospace department of DRDO. Nuclear submarines, a range of Naval ships, are some of the achievements of the Marine department of DRDO.
Areas of Research at DRDO
There is a network of around 52 laboratories of DRDO across the country which are dedicated to the research in various fields like Aeronautics, Armaments, Electronics, Combat Engineering, Life sciences, materials, Missiles, Naval systems, etc. One who desires to be a Scientist in DRDO can choose his/her career in the areas of research in accordance with his/her field of study or specialization.
Aeronautics
DRDO develops military Aircrafts like Fighter jets, Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV or Drone), Helicopters and Electronic Warfare systems like AEW & CS. The notable products of DRDO are LCA tejas which has proved to be quite reliable and is also under prototype stage for Naval variant. The helicopter HAL Dhruv and HAL LCH have also been proved to be of great reliability. DRDO also works on upgrading of the present aircrafts and their armaments. DRDO has recently launched the 5 generation aircraft program of AMCA (advanced medium combat aircraft).
Arms, Ammunition, Artillery
DRDO co-operates with the Ordnance Factories Board for its products. The current main rifle of the Indian Armed Forces, the INSAS along with some other weapons and explosives have been developed by DRDO in the past. It also Develops Tanks and Artillery weapons.
Electronics and Computer Sciences
The RADAR technology has been developed indigenously by DRDO for the Defence Forces. RADARs are an integral part of defence systems which give early warning signals to the stations. DRDO has also been working on laser guided bombs and missiles. Artificial Intelligence is the emerging field of research and development.
Naval research and Development
The Naval Department works on development of Warships, Submarines, Frigates, & Destroyers. This department is also responsible for the development of Torpedos which are underwater missiles and are referred as Varunastra Sanskrit.
Missile Systems
India is a leading country in terms of acquisition of Nuclear capable long range Ballistic missiles and is one of very few with Intercontinental Ballistic missiles. The BRAHMOS missile is the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world with a maximum speed of mach 3. DRDO undertakes missile development in the Aerospace department.
Actual job of a Scientist at DRDO
A scientist works on research in the field of his specialization.
Every department of DRDO like Missile, Aerospace work in coordination between the different sub departments. For example the Aerospace department comprises sub departments like Design, Thermodynamics, Propulsion, Avionics, Electronics, Mechanics, etc.
Basically the work of a Scientist at DRDO is to research in their area and find ways to make the project more and more efficient and precise.
