Rui sits motionless on the bleachers, waiting for his name to be called.

He wishes he could be happy for these people. These students smile so brightly as they hold up certificates, like they've been waiting all year for this- hell, some of them probably have. He can feel the joy radiating off them.

Why couldn't he feel that way?

This is really the only thing he has. He's the envy of the school for it. Why can't he be proud?

The staff member running it has started calling off B names. He can't bear to look at their smiles anymore. He stares down at his legs, clapping when he hears other people clap as he spaces out, hoping it might hurt a little less.

He's snapped out of his trance as the person next to him sits up, and he knows he's next. He can't brace himself quick enough.

His deadname called out with such pride, like an ice pick to the brain. Suddenly hyper-aware of his surroundings. Everything's so quiet, and so loud at once. He ambles down the staircase. He might be shaking, he's unsure.

Despite how conviced, or maybe hopeful he was that he'd slip and fall, he made it down with no issue, and before he knew it he was stood next to the person speaking.

They hand him several papers, announcing each one like he can't read. Next to them, it's too loud.

A honor roll. Science project reward one. Science project reward two. Physics award. Award for history grades, for a mandatory writing contest in language, for AP algebra, a citizenship award...

... that's all. finally.

The staff member taps his shoulder, ordering him to face the rest of the student body as he holds the folder provided to carry these. They rave on for some time about his intelligence, his diligence, his dedication to academics, the example he sets.

it's making his blood boil it's making him want to yell and kick and scream and pull his hair out

it makes an unpleasant feeling well up in his chest, but he decides it's not the time and shoves it down with the weight of his forced, awkward, ingenuine smile.

It feels like forever.

He's finally given the OK to go back up to his seat, which he can't get to faster. When he reaches it, he gives a deep sigh and buries his face in his hands for the remainder of the event, creasing the folder beneath his elbows...
