Introducing Avatars 2.0

A lot has happened over the past couple months! With nearly a million minutes of video chat per day, our team has been working around the clock to support our growing community on Itsme. Today, we're thrilled to announce Avatars 2.0.

Itsme is all about being Your truest and most expressive self while discovering and growing friendships around the world. With other Avatars, there's a limit to just how expressive You can be. They look like plastic, the hair doesn't move, the face isn't nice. It's just not You. So we made something different - and we think It feels a lot better.

We've grown our team to include artists who previously made films at places like Pixar and Disney, and created a next generation of Itsme Avatars that are super appealing and incredibly expressive. When You look at Your Avatar, Its eyes are full of life. When You smile, Its cheeks move just as You expect they would. And It's fully customizable, so It's totally unique to You.

But that's not all - we're also releasing Your very own trading cards of Your Avatar! Whenever You save Your Avatar, a gorgeous trading card will be rendered on our servers and made uniquely for You. You can choose to share It to other social networks to show off Your new look across the internet!

So that's Avatars 2.0 & Trading Cards: It's Unlike Anything Else. Just Like You.

🆕 It’s New: Search is early! Search is an awesome new way to explore the Itsme network, but It’s just a v1. Over time, we’ll make It even more powerful, start to surface trends, and expand the possibilities of what you can Search for.

What Avatar? It’s Me!

At first glance, it seems simple.  The Internet should be the best way for people to meet friends and grow friendships. Instant global reach and understanding of our interests should allow us to have spontaneous fun and make meaningful connections with the right people for each of us, all around the world, all the time.

That hasn’t happened...yet.  Companies compulsively “digitized our offline friend graphs,” mixing and remixing every possible way to communicate with our networks and peer groups.  When we are offered the opportunity to discover new people, we’re given tools to upload our idealized photos for others to swipe through, fill out forms about ourselves and our “dealbreaker” demographics, and then get matched with the people nearby who find us attractive and fit our queries in a database.

We want something different - we want to be liberated from the tyranny of how our camera sees us and be able to create our most expressive selves. We want to feel comfortable trying new things and having fun with people who accept us for who we are. This is why we’re making Itsme.

At the soul of Itsme is your Avatar - a fully customizable, 3D, high-fidelity reflection of Yourself. Your Avatar enables you to be your truest self online, while also being as safe and private as you want to be. It’s like your very own Pixar character, fully controllable, and right on your phone.

Your Avatar isn’t a mask to hide behind, nor is It a tell that you’re having a bad hair day. It’s a way to see yourself in a new context, experiment and have fun - why not try on the lollipop earrings on Itsme before you commit to that piercing? It’s as much about who you are as It is about who you can be.

On Itsme, you use your Avatar to meet the people you’ll enjoy meeting.  The app learns what you like and dislike and introduces you to the right people for you from around the world.  It’s based on the words you use and who you interact with the most - not on the way you look.  We use technology to help you know that every chat you’ll have on Itsme will be fun, safe, and engaging.

Itsme...it’s us too.  My co-founder John and I met on Reddit in 2017. I was an iOS engineer living in NYC trying to learn more about computer graphics, and John was an indie game developer living in Belfast commenting about… computer graphics. I sent him a message and we quickly bonded.

So far, millions of people just like us have met on Itsme - not based on their appearance, but based on who they are. 

We have some fun updates on the way, and we’re super excited for the future.
