I took a class in high school where we watched this video of open heart surgery and the guy died on the table. I literally watched his heart stop beating. The teacher didn’t warn us and there was no paper slip sent home for parent(s) permission or anything. I watched a man’s heart stop beating and not start again. It wasn’t a dramatization or reenactment. Two girls cried and one passed out. My best friend and I looked at each other like we couldn’t believe was we had just seen, and we both still remember it as one of the most intense things we’ve ever had to watch. They even showed him before the surgery and let you form an emotional attachment to him as he flirted with an intern and talked about soccer. They talked about his life and his family. Then they showed his surgery and his death.

We were allowed to watch this without even a verbal heads up from the teacher, but my band teacher got in trouble for playing The Nightmare Before Christmas (we were playing a medley of songs from it) without sending out parent permission slips.

I was allowed to literally watch a man’s heart beat for the last time, but not a Disney movie.
