Bushfires have wreaked havoc across Australia. Lives and property lost and, with an estimated 480 million animals killed, our unique biodiversity may never recover. News this morning is that, amongst the losses on Kangaroo Island are the lives of 2 people and significant damage to Southern Ocean Lodge. This is one of the most wonderful places I have visited, the south west of the Island was rugged, beautiful and unique. My heart weeps. Thinking of everyone impacted by all the devastating fires across our nation and thanks to our volunteers that are working tirelessly to keep us safe. Let's hope the government steps up not just with short term assistance but with overdue leadership and strategy on climate and disaster management. The weather is horrific again today... The Dark Emu. The dark emu depicted within the Milky Way, as described by indigenous astronomy, is seen leaping above its terrestrial namesake. This composite was made from frames taken around the Hilltops region of NSW. I have thought about creating this image for some time. Around dusk a lone emu crested a ridge creating the perfect silhouette for a foreground to join the stacked/tracked background of the rising Milky Way. Inspired by the enlightening and fascinating book 'Dark Emu' by Bruce Pascoe. If you are interested in the true indigenous history of Australia, give it a read.
