Traffic Circles
Traffic circles otherwise known as roundabouts are very handy. They are used in place of traffic lights. In areas of higher population densities they are more abundant. A roundabout is used to slow down traffic. It is basically a big circle that has different exits that people can take to go in different directions. Roundabouts are thought to be more safe. They are safer because instead of fully stopping people are yielding their cars to cars that are to their left. The most dangerous way to be hit in a car is to be hit on the side creating a T-bone effect. T-bone accidents are very impactful to both parties. In a roundabout, if car is hit it is usually hit near the bumper or sideways which takes most of the impact away causing less injuries. Now, when using a roundabout it is a good idea to slow down before entering it. Yield to anyone that is already in the roundabout and coming from the left since they have the right-of-way. Once the lane is clear, it is safe to enter the roundabout. Pay attention at all times to the surroundings. Then use a turn signal showing other cars which exit you are taking.

Essay Four Ideas
For essay four I have two ideas to write about. The first one that I have is about how to turkey hunting. Possible ideas I might talk about are how to call a turkey by featuring the different types of calls and how to use them. I can also talk about at what point in the year to use certain calls. Turkey hunting is very difficult because they are so smart, so I also would talk about how to outsmart them. My second topic that I have been thinking about is looking for morel mushrooms. I love to find morel mushrooms in the spring and found 14lbs. this past spring. I would talk about the narrow time frame that they are growing in and what kind of trees that they grow under.

Lady Gaga - Panache
Lady Gaga is the ideal image of panache. She definitely is a person that most people would think of as “out there”. Honestly has she ever dressed in what a normal person would call everyday clothes? Maybe there is a reason behind all her glitter and glamour that she chooses to wear. Since she is famous, maybe this is her way of showing it. Obviously she likes to be the center of attention and this is for sure one way that she is always the center of attention wherever she is at. Dressing this way also allows her to show that she is famous and that she is a pop star that everyone loves. Another reason behind her fashion might be to have her stick out as a singer. I’d say most famous singers wear something that is somewhat normal, but not in lady Gaga’s case. This is just a way for her to show that she is a queen and better than other singers because people will remember her for her outfits over other singers. Here is just a few examples of her outrageous outfits: http://popcrush.com/lady-gaga-style-fashion-clothing-outfits-gallery/.

The End of Retirement
In “The End of Retirement” Jessica Bruder argues that the average American worker is having to work many more years to reach an age where they can retire. Throughout the article Bruder follows a story of an elderly lady named May and the community she lives in. May and many other people have been working odd and end jobs their whole life. She has never made much money and lives alone. For years May has been living in a mobile home in a community of other elderly people in her same situation. Bruder also went to the camp outside of Arizona and visited with these people to get their understanding on living in the community
The main reason for this article is to persuade people that people need to be paid more in their life so they do not go broke when they are trying to retire. As stated in the article “Nearly 7.7 million Americans sixty-five and older were still employed last year, up 60 percent from a decade earlier.” This quote is directly showing that this article is mainly persuasive because it is showing that more people are becoming poorer in the current day compared to older generations. Older generations were better able to afford to retire at younger ages.
Another persuasive purpose to this article is that it shows that many older Americans are not suited to work at older ages due to health concerns. Bruden explains that “Vans and trailers don’t last forever. Neither do bodies.” Other examples are used throughout the passage that show specific injuries elderly people have had including May. This article is trying to persuade that older people should not have to work, but should be living in the comforts of their home where they are not facing danger in the workplace.

Obama Criticized
The primary purpose of the article criticizing Obama for living like a king written by the Onion is to entertain. The Onion is a news outlet that pokes fun of current day issues in a satirical fashion. In this article they are criticizing President Obama for living an extravagant life in the White House. They explain how Obama is living in a 132 bedroom house with staff at his fingertips and has anything that he could ever want. It truly is entertaining because the article is written in such a serious tone that made the author seem very concerned about the topic even though they are just making fun of how the president lives.
Although the Onion is written in a satire style, can it be argued that this article’s secondary purpose is to persuade people’s opinion about how much money is used to support the president’s comfort? Some people may not like President Obama and may agree with this article and how the president is being pampered. This article really could persuade people that are not fans of Obama just because the article is criticizing his living style. The overall professionalism of the article makes it sound very real to a reader that doesn’t know the Onion is satirical.  A statement from the Onion  reads “anyone who sleeps in a sprawling six-level neoclassical mansion covering 18 acres of Washington, D.C.'s most valuable real estate is clearly out of touch with the lives of ordinary citizens.” This portion of the article does make a real world case against the president living in a mansion. Other examples are used throughout the article like this one that are very arguable in the way that they could be valid arguments against Obama living such an extravagant life. This secondary purpose of actually exposing about how Obama lives can be used to show that many Americans are still suffering while one family is being treated like kings with taxpayer money. It is still written in a satirical approach to make it more light hearted but deep down could actually be used to give thought to people about this topic.

The Climate Fixers
Spector chooses to end the article in this way so to really make his point of using climate technology. Through the article he explains the use for trying this technology to save the world’s climate and help prevent climate change. Ending in this blunt fashion leaves me with a feeling of  “wow it would be stupid not to utilize this”. The ending suggest that geo-engineering is the answer to climate change and we as nations need to come together and start using it. He also explains that the human race impacts the earth in far worse ways each day than trying to help it with geo-engineering. When it comes down to it, we are already destroying the earth, and Spector is saying we might as well try to change the climate in hopes of fixing it.

GMO Corn
https://www.livestrong.com/article/445552-how-to-bake-frozen-corn/
This article from Live Strong was all about GM corn. GM corn has many benefits which include having overall better quality, resist pest and parasites, increase yields, and live in many different climatic regions. Corn was first modified 10,000 years ago in Mexico where it use to be a kind of grass. Some genes that have been modified are called soil bacterium. Modifying this gene allowed corn to produce a crystal called Cry. Once an insects eats a corn kernel with Cry in it, it will die. This modification allows corn to grow in areas that are usually very disturbed by insects. Herbicide resistant corn is also very helpful. Corn that has been modified to reject herbicides allows farmers to kill weeds without affecting the corn crop.
Live Strong was and will be very helpful to me. I plan on using information from this article to give facts within my research paper. It was helpful because it broadened my knowledge about GM corn.

AG. Bio-security Case Study
https://fas.org/biosecurity/education/dualuse-agriculture/2.-agricultural-biotechnology/genetically-engineered-crops.html
The article that I read was giving more facts about GMO’s and the capabilities that they may have. According to this article in 2010 “80% of corn, soybeans, cotton, and sugar beets” crops have been modified. This article also stresses that plants have always been bred for specific traits, and GMO’s are a quicker way to do this.
This relates to the topic that I am pursuing because it gives more background information about GMO’s. For my paper I want to write about the specific impacts of a certain GM product has. This article won’t really help me with that because this was a broad spectrum of what a GMO crop is. However, I do find this article useful with some of the facts given because they could help me in writing my research paper.

Plagiarism
The primary purpose of this article was to entertain and the secondary purpose is to inform. Throughout the article, the author has a sarcastic tone about the person that he has been tutoring. She tried to plagiarize a whole paper and did it is such an awful way that it can’t possibly seem like she had written a word in it. The author of this article is entertaining just by describing the stupidity of how this girl couldn’t even plagiarize somewhat realistically.
He also informs the girl and the readers on how to plagiarize a paper in a more convincing way. To even plagiarize something somewhat to make the professor seem as it’s yours, he says to change spelling so words are spelled wrong. The author also says to take out words or at least modify it a little bit to make it sound a little more original. In the end he suggest just buying someone’s homework from a student of a different class.
I think the author was successful in entertaining his audience because he was able to poke so much fun at this girl for being such an awful writer and the fact that she  can’t even plagiarize decent. The whole article was being sarcastic and he even told us how to plagiarize the right way. He was successful because he poked so much fun at this girl that the reader was left with a feeling of “really how don’t you know how to plagiarize” or “wow this girl really isn’t a good writer”. These feelings from the ready conveyed his message well.

Sacco’s Social Media
I do not believe that social media apps like Twitter should be used to ridicule someone because they did something stupid. The chances are that many people in our community have posted something controversial or hurtful on a social media platform. Does this mean they are a bad person? Probably not. People make mistakes everyday, and yes they should be held accountable for them if they are hurtful to someone. I don’t believe that blowing up someone’s social media account and causing them to lose their job is the correct way to humiliate them. A simple private message to the person explaining what is wrong with the post can solve the issue without ruining someone’s life.

Essay 3 Article Topic
Lisa Nowatzki argues in “GMO’s are Considered Safe for Consumers in Multiple Studies” argues that GMO’s pose no threat to human health and need to be utilized. GMO’s have been used for many years and people don’t even know that they are eating them. They can save lives. In Africa millions of people have died waiting for GMO’s to be fully used. These people died due to the controversy holding them back from getting them on the market. Many of these new crops are “considered all safe”. Although many tests propose GMO’s are safe, 40% still believe that they are harmful to health.
The article by Nowatzki was very informative for the use of GMO’s. I am all for the use of GMO’s and enjoyed reading this article as a source of why they are good. This article will be one of many articles I will need to use to support my idea that GMO’s are needing to be used. It relates to my topic in other ways because it gives reliable citations of first hand people that work with GMO’s and have tested them.

Solomon’s Credibility
For today I will be discussing the credibility of Andrew Solomon in his article “The Autism Rights Movement”.
Throughout the reading Solomon gives off a sensation that he is trustworthy and knows what he is talking about. Is that the case though? I think it depends on how someone defines trustworthiness. For me, I do believe that he is trustworthy. Nothing in the article seems to jump out at me that he is an unreliable source. He even has severe dyslexia himself which should give him some credibility knowing that he deals with this everyday.
When it comes to his schooling, at the time of the article he had a Bachelor degree in English. After this degree, he was a writer for New York Times. I do believe that writing for the New York Times should give him some credibility about being a writer, but maybe not so much on the topic of autism. In 2013 though he did receive a Ph.D. in psychology. I believe if he wrote this article after 2013 that he would be a very credible source since he would have better knowledge in the subject.
The purpose of this article is to say that people with autism are people too. He gives examples of people wanting a cure for autism but he states that that is who they are. Solomon also discusses cures for extreme cases and Temple Grandin’s idea of meeting somewhere in the middle for a cure. In the end Solomon still believes to leave autism untouched because that is someone’s unique personality.

Ideas for Research Project
I am an Agricultural Education Major with an Agribusiness minor. Right now in the world of agriculture there are problems coming up left and right. Some of these problems are GMO’s, consumer/farmer communication, agricultural prices, etc. As a past FFA member, I really like the topic of the consumer and informing them. This also fits my teaching major. My topic might be along the lines of where did the trust between consumers and producers fall out. An article explaining this might be https://www.nongmoproject.org/gmo-facts/.

Technology Killed Courtship
http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2013/01/14/the_new_york_times_says_technology_killed_courtship_we_say_good_riddance.html
In the article “Technology Killed Courtship” by Amanda Hess, she argues that the art of courtship has been killed due to the all common use of technology. The art of courtship has changed in the recent years to include the use of technology. Dating use to be “simple back then”, but today is filled with the confusion of adding phones into the mix. Woman have changed their roles from wanting a husband to looking for a friend, boyfriend, sex, or even networking. In today’s day and age courtship not only has been complicated by technology, but also from what males and females both desire.
I prefer this article because I believe that Hess is true in all regards. Technology has made courtship confusing. Sometimes emotions are lost in the words that may be sent in a text. Understandings from both parties might be confused. I could also make the case that it is sometimes easier to talk to people through a text message instead of awkwardly asking them out in person - which relatively never happens anymore. Compared to the other article, Hess was right to the point about courtship and explained what has happened to our roots without dabbling around the topic.

Summary of “The Cult of Overwork”
James Surowiecki argues in his article “The Cult of Overwork” that bankers on Wall Street are working too long of days. Individuals working here are often putting in fifteen hour long days. Working long days “makes bankers think of themselves as tougher and more dedicated than everyone else.” Surowiecki interviewed many businesses and they said no one should work more than seventy five hours a week maximum, while some are working a hundred and twenty hours a week.
The work done by these bankers is “diminish both productivity and quality.” Bankers are becoming sleep deprived which has lead to many negative health impacts and work yield. These bankers aren’t getting any rest. Many of them go home and even work after their shifts or on the weekends. As this cycle continues, the bankers are getting burned out of their jobs, many just after a few years. Some reasons people are working long hours is because they may be paid hourly or feel the need too. Businesses need to cap individuals off at how long they can work for their own sake and the company’s. They need to “change not just rules but expectations.”

Jared’s Life
Hello! My name is Jared Mack and I am a sophomore her at UWRF where I am currently majoring in Agricultural Education and minoring in Agribusiness. My hometown is Merrimac WI. I am not the typical agricultural student; I don’t come from a farm, nor have ever milked a cow. My interest in agriculture started when I started FFA in high school. Once in FFA, I became very involved and knew that I wanted to be an agriculturalist someday. As I went through high school, agriculture started taking over my life. I began to raise poultry, show pigs, mow lawns as a business, manage forests, and show dairy heifers. These interest have lead me to being an officer in Ag. Ed. Society and Collegiate Farm Bureau here on campus. In my free time, I love to go hunting. Not only do I love hunting, but managing the woods is my favorite thing to do. Whether it is cutting invasive species, making food plots or water holes, putting up tree stands, or hiking around, the woods is where I have my most fun and relax. When I’m not doing something agricultural related or in the woods, I work at Merry Mac’s Campground. At the campground I am the manager and make sure everything is getting done and it looks in tip top shape for our customers. To wrap this up I have a video on how to make food plots. This videos demonstrates the same techniques on how I make my food plots and can be found right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNIeMP3yTb4.
