Former hockey coach pleads guilty to molestation
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — A former Colorado volunteer hockey coach who fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution has pleaded guilty to molesting two boys.
The Coloradoan reports that Andrew Vanderwal entered the plea Wednesday in Fort Collins during a hearing attended by the boys' families.
He faces between eight and 24 years in prison when he's sentenced March 1. He will also have to be on parole for 20 years to life after he is released under a plea deal.
The case was delayed because Vanderwal fled to Mexico after posting bail. The mother of one of the alleged victims traveled there to help find him and he was arrested by the FBI in February.
The FBI has said Vanderwal moved in with families of the children he coached after gaining their trust.

Dachshund puppy recovered after car theft
ARVADA, Colo. — Police have recovered a puppy that was inside a vehicle when a suspect or suspects stole the car Sunday morning.
The Andersons had their hands full with a 4-week-old baby, two dogs and a move from Texas to Oregon. To break up the drive, the family stopped at a relative’s house in Arvada.
On Sunday around 5 a.m., they packed up the car and moved it closer to the house. The car wasn’t running, but the fob to start it was left inside and the vehicle had a push-to-start button. As the family was getting ready to leave, a suspect got into the car and took off with not only the vehicle, but the couple’s 10-month-old Dachshund, Ciri, inside, said Cheliesa Anderson.
On Wednesday morning, Arvada police said the puppy had been recovered and is OK. Westminster police helped to find her, Arvada police said. Police said two suspects have also been arrested.
Before the dog was recovered, the suspects attempted to steal the Anderson's other car, but the battery was dead. They were however able to break inside and steal multiple items, including Anderson's mom's ashes.
"A lot of the stuff in there was expensive and irreplaceable, like my mom's ashes and her jewelry, her pearls and stuff like that," she said.
As of Wednesday at 7 a.m., it is unclear if the car or ashes have been returned or recovered. A relative started a GoFundMe page to help them raise money to replace some of the items that were stolen and pay for a rental car.

Gusty winds across Colorado today
DENVER — A fast moving Pacific cold front will zip across the state today.  This front will spread snow over the mountains, with four to eight inches possible for the northern and central mountains by early Thursday morning.
This type of cold front will drop most of the moisture in the mountains, leaving very little for Denver or the eastern plains.  Just light snow showers can be expected Wednesday evening into early Thursday,
Temperatures will be a bit cooler on Wednesday, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s and in the 20s to low 30s in the mountains.
Clearing and cooler conditions can be expected on Thursday, with highs the low 40s across the Front Range.
The westerly winds aloft will continue in the weekend, blocking any really cold air from reaching Colorado.
Drier weather and more sunshine can be expected for Friday with highs in the low 50s. Temperatures should return to the middle 50s to near 60 degrees Saturday and Sunday.
Be sure to download the STORM SHIELD APP to help keep you ahead of any stormy weather!

Men's races eliminated from Colorado Classic
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Classic will be a stand-alone women's bicycle race next year, eliminating the need to divide limited resources on separate men's and women's competitions, organizers said.
The races scheduled for Aug. 22-25 are expected to attract 20 teams. The locations have not yet been set, The Denver Post reported Tuesday.
The change would allow organizers to set up "one great race instead of two average ones," said Ken Gart, chairman of RPM Events Group.
Colorado Gov.-elect Jared Polis said the rearranged event has the potential to become "the premier women's race in the Western Hemisphere."
The prize money next year will be $75,000, $5,000 more than the purse for the men's races this year, Gart said. The women's prize this year was $20,000.
"We love men's cycling. We're proud of the work our team has done the last couple of years, and I think we were very innovative, but our ability to impact men's cycling really was very minimal," Gart said. "Our potential to impact women's cycling around the globe, we think, is really dramatic."
From the reconfiguration, organizers would be able to design longer and more challenging race stages than those in past years, said Sean Petty, who was race director of the women's races the past two years.
"This is a monumental day for women's cycling," Petty said. "It's a huge paradigm shift. Normally, when you hear about a race going away, it's the women's race. This is flipping the script."

Tulowitzki released by Jays, owed $38 million
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki has been released by the Toronto Blue Jays, who owe the oft-injured shortstop $38 million for the remaining two years of his contract.
Now 34, Tulowitzki has not played in the major leagues since July 2017. He was limited that year to 66 games because of a hamstring and right ankle injury. The ankle required surgery last spring and he missed the entire season.
Tulowitzki was taken by Colorado with the seventh overall pick in the 2005 amateur draft and became a five-time All-Star. The Rockies agreed after the 2010 season to a $157.75 million, 10-year contract that added $132 million over seven seasons, then traded him in July 2015 to Toronto in a deal that brought shortstop Jose Reyes to Colorado.
While Tulowitzki helped the Blue Jays reach that year's AL Championship Series, he slumped the next year and then was derailed by injuries.
He is owed $20 million for next year, $14 million for 2020 and a $4 million buyout of the 2021 team option.
Toronto, which announced the move Tuesday at the winter meetings, will be paying Tulowitzki for many years: $5 million of his 2019 salary is deferred at 3 percent interest and is payable in 10 equal installments each Jan. 1 from 2025-34. In addition, the buyout is due in $2 million installments on July 1 in 2021 and 2022.

The Aurora Sentinel reports that Gabriel Alsina pleaded not guilty on Monday in Arapahoe County District Court to five felony counts of sexual assault on a child.

Police say they learned of the relationship after receiving a tip from the victim's therapist.

Former CU coach's ex objects to reported plea
BOULDER, Colo. – The former girlfriend of former University of Colorado assistant football coach Joe Tumpkin filed a formal objection in Broomfield Combined Court asking the judge in the case not to accept a plea deal the former coach has reportedly reached with the district attorney’s office.
Tumpkin is expected to appear in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on five counts of second-degree assault and three counts of third-degree assault against his ex-girlfriend, who has publicly identified herself as Pamela Fine.
But according to the Boulder Daily Camera, Tumpkin and prosecutors reached a plea deal in which Tumpkin is expected to plead guilty to one misdemeanor count of assault and see the other charges dropped.
Tumpkin resigned from the university a day before he was charged with assaulting Fine. Tumpkin allegedly strangled her and beat her on multiple occasions between 2015 and 2016, according to police documents in the case, whose handling also led to penalties for CU’s then-head coach, chancellor and athletic director. Fine has alleged that the university knew of Tumpkin’s alleged abuse and tried to cover it up, and the university said it could have done more to respond to her accusations in a more timely fashion.
“I don't know what else to do. That's why I'm relying now on the message getting out. I feel like that's the only thing that will shed light on what I believe to be an incredible injustice,” Fine said in an interview with Denver7 Tuesday. “It's not safe. What's going on isn't – I will be fine. I will be fine, regardless.”
Fine first spoke to Sports Illustrated about the alleged abuse and on Monday formally filed the objection to Tumpkin’s supposed plea deal, accusing prosecutors of failing to account for her rights under the Colorado Victim’s Rights Act and of not listening to her pleas to have the preliminary hearing moved so she could attend.
“If the prosecutor truly wanted to comply with the Victim’s Rights Act, he would have engaged in meaningful discussions and consultations with the victim before he offered a plea deal that disregards five felonious assault charges while also disregarding the victim’s strong objections,” Fine wrote in her objection.
She says she told prosecutors she could not attend the hearing on Dec. 12 but instead gave a “multitude” of other dates that she could attend. She writes that prosecutors agreed, but then told her last week that it had not been moved after all.
She also argues that the agreement into which Tumpkin has allegedly entered is unfair under prosecutorial rules.
“The current plea agreement indicates one of two things: Either the prosecutor abused his duty by bringing charges not supported by probable cause or the prosecutor is ignoring evidence sworn in by probable cause affidavits and has offered highly unusual and extremely favorable terms to a locally high-profile defendant who has ties to the Colorado Buffalo [sic] football program and the University of Colorado,” she wrote, adding that attorneys have told her the deal was “unusual.”
She argues that if the judge accepts the plea deal, it would have a “chilling effect” on victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
“If, in this case, the victim has shown the courage to step forward against her abuse and remain a witness for the prosecution for two years without wavering, yet her abuse is allowed to accept this misdemeanor, which is the lowest level misdemeanor this court can accept, it will undoubtedly send a crippling message to current and future victims of abuse at the University of Colorado,” she argues.
A judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Fine regarding the case earlier this year, but Fine has given notice to appeal the dismissal, according to federal court records.
“I keep fighting because what about all those girls at CU campus? And what about all the women in Broomfield? And the next woman who walks into that police department?” Fine told Denver7 Tuesday.
Tumpkin’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday in Broomfield Combined Court.
Denver7's Liz Gelardi contributed to this report.

Car, puppy and ashes stolen from family
ARVADA -- Moving is challenging enough but the Andersons have their hands full with a four-week-old baby and two dogs. They are moving from Texas to Oregon and stopped at a relative's house in Arvada to break up the drive.
"He grabbed the dog and the diaper bag, walked back out and the car was gone," said Cheliesa Anderson.
It was Sunday morning around 5 a.m. and they wanted to get an early start. Anderson packed up the car, then her husband moved it closer to the house. It was not running but the car has a push button start and the fob was left inside.
Right as they were getting ready to leave, someone took off in the car. Their Dachshund puppy named Ciri was inside and the thieves took the dog too.
"We really just want the dog back," said Anderson.
Later that day, she went to the Walmart at 58th and Independence, where she spotted a car that looked similar to the black Ford Fusion that was stolen.
"I thought I was just going crazy, but when they turned I saw it because the bottom part of our bumper is gone. So there's two plastic things that hang down that you can see visibly and Texas plates," said Anderson.
Arvada police are now reviewing surveillance video from Walmart but were unable to release any images at this time.
The Andersons' moving nightmare gets even worse. After the car was stolen they decided to stay for a few more days. The thieves returned Tuesday morning and tried to steal their other car.
"They broke into this car and tried to steal this car because my key to this car was on the key in the other car," said Anderson.
The battery was dead so they were unable to steal it, but the thieves did take nearly everything inside, including her mother's ashes.
"A lot of the stuff in there was expensive and irreplaceable, like my mom's ashes and her jewelry, her pearls and stuff like that," said Anderson.
The family is continuing their journey to Oregon but hopes their dog and some of their belongings will be found. A relative started a GoFundMe page to help them raise money to replace some of the items that were stolen and pay for a rental car.

Police release video of missing Colorado woman
WOODLAND PARK, Colo. – Police on Tuesday released surveillance video of 29-year-old Kelsey Berreth that was taken at the Safeway grocery store in Woodland Park on Nov. 22—the day she was last seen.
Police said at a news conference Monday that Berreth had last been seen at the Safeway with her year-old daughter and released the video of her at the store on Tuesday.
The young woman has not been seen since, though her cell phone pinged to a location near Gooding, Idaho on Nov. 25, police said – about 800 miles from Woodland Park. Police Chief Miles De Young also said Monday that a text message sent that same day from Berreth’s phone said she wouldn’t be at work the following week.
Police said detectives searched Berreth's home and both of her vehicles and have been unable to find any sign of her. Berreth’s brother told Good Morning America that she did not seem to have packed to go anywhere, since her makeup and suitcases were untouched at her home.
Berreth’s mother, Cheryl Berreth, said Monday that her daughter’s disappearance was “completely out of character” and police said the case was a missing persons case as of Monday.
De Young also said Monday that Berreth’s fiancé, Patrick Frazee, had told officers he hadn’t heard from Berreth since Nov. 25 and had not seen her since Nov. 22 when they last exchanged their daughter.
ABC News attempted to speak with Frazee Tuesday outside an attorney’s office in Colorado Springs but he declined to talk.
Berreth was last seen in a white shirt, gray sweater, blue pants, brown purse and white shoes.
She is described as a white female standing 5 feet, three inches tall and weighing 110 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes.
Anybody with information on her disappearance is encouraged to contact the Woodland Park Police Department at 719-687-9262 or email [email protected].
A Facebook page has been set up to help find her and Cheryl Berreth encouraged people to share the page.

DA asked to probe convention center bidding
DENVER – The city of Denver announced Tuesday it had stopped the bidding process for the $233 million Colorado Convention Center expansion and asked the Denver District Attorney’s Office to investigate possible misconduct in the process.
Companies have been submitting bids for the design and build of the convention center since earlier this year. The expansion plans have been underway since June 2017.
But this week, the Denver City Attorney’s Office told Mayor Michael Hancock about a “willful violation” of the bidding process, and Hancock sent a letter to Denver District Attorney Beth McCann Tuesday asking for an investigation.
“The City has discovered potentially improper collusion between the City’s project management consultant and one of the proposers related to the procurement of a design build contractor for the Project,” Hancock wrote in the letter to McCann. “I request that your office investigate to determine whether any of this conduct rose to the level of criminal activity.”
The mayor’s office said Denver Public Works was starting to interview contractors last month when “it was discovered that the required, open, fair and competitive process to select a contractor had been tainted,” according to a news release.
The Denver City Attorney’s Office found that “the integrity of the procurement was irreparably compromised by non-city participants” by the release of city documents to a contractor that was bidding on the project; by “improper discussion” about the bidding process and by altering approved project plans, according to the mayor’s office.
The city is terminating a $9 million contact with Trammell Crow, which was providing program management services for the project, and will start a new process to find a new design and build contractor. The company said it was cooperating with the city and conducting its own internal investigation.
"The alleged actions in connection with the Colorado Convention Center project have in no way been authorized by Trammell Crow Company and are contrary to the firm's values and longstanding business practices," Trammell Crow Company Senior Managing Director Bill Mosher said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the City and are conducting our own internal investigation. We will take internal actions as the results of our investigation dictate, including appropriate disciplinary measures."
The mayor’s office additionally said that the executive director of public works is asking for a review of the prequalification status of one of the local companies bidding for the contract, Mortenson, for future projects.
Maja Rosenquist, a senior vice president at Mortenson, said in a statement to Denver7 that they will be cooperating with the district attorney’s office.
“We’ve received a letter from the City and County of Denver concerning termination of the RFP for the Colorado Convention Center Expansion project. We take the issues raised by the City very seriously and are committed to addressing this matter thoroughly and appropriately,” Rosenquist said in a statement. “We are conducting our own review of our participation in the RFP process and will cooperate with any further inquiries by the City or the District Attorney’s Office.”
Denver has said the expansion to the convention center and additional marketing could generate 25 more conventions each year and bring in an extra $85 million each year in economic impacts.

City asks residents to weigh on Loretto Heights
DENVER – Southwest Denver residents can now make their voices heard on the future of one of the area’s most visible landmarks: the Loretto Heights school campus.
City planners last week announced the launch of an online survey that will collect community input on the future of the one-time Catholic girls' school turned college. Loretto Heights is known across the south metro area for the towered administration building that sits at the heart of campus at 3001 S. Federal Blvd.
The survey — available at dpo.st/lorettosurvey — asks participants to pinpoint things they like about the 72-acre campus and surrounding area. It also asks what aspects of the neighborhood concern them or could use improvement, and what respondents hope to see in the future.
The survey can be taken in Spanish or English. It will be available online through Feb. 15. It is open to everyone but does ask participants to identify what neighborhood they live in.
It is part of a larger public outreach effort for Loretto Heights. The city has put together a steering committee with neighborhood residents and launched a stand-alone website covering plans for the property’s future, DenverGov.org/ lorettoheights. The city is planning a historic survey of the property and its buildings, according to a news release. The goal is to create an area plan, subject to City Council review and approval, that will guide long-term decision making. A public meeting is being planned for Jan. 15 for those who prefer to comment in person, rather than online.

FORT LOGAN, Colo – Nicole Tillotson has the house on the block that everyone knows – the house with all the Christmas decorations.
This year, Tillotson had an idea to add something else in her yard for the holidays – a free little library.
Tillotson’s little library is on Rice Place and Quitman Street.
“We only had it in for two weeks,” Tillotson said. “We cycled through all the books. People kept picking them up and dropping one off. It was great.”
Tillotson said she got the idea by walking dogs around her neighborhood and saw one a few blocks away from her house.
“I just like bringing joy to my neighborhood,” Tillotson said. “And this is a way to help share that.”
However, about two weeks ago, a Grinch came into her neighborhood and stole all the books.
“It was completely wiped out when I came home,” Tillotson said. “To see that, it broke my heart. But I think it ended up being a good thing for our neighborhood.”
Tillotson said the books were stolen on Sunday, and by Monday the problem was solved.
“So I went on my NextDoor app and posted about all the books stolen,” Tillotson said. “Within a day I already had 28 different people willing to donate more books to the little library. And the library was filled. I think it brought the community together.”
Tillotson said there have been so many donations that she needs to build another little library.
“This is just something that’s good for the community,” Tillotson said about the little library. “And we want to keep it that way.”
