Who is a physiotherapist and what do they do?
I choose the title physiotherapist over physical therapist because it is the established title used in the rest of the world outside the US. Plus, it sounds cooler and can be shortened to physio. However throughout this post physiotherapist will be used interchangeably with physical therapy.
According to the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association), physical therapists are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help reduce pain and improve or restore mobility. If you ask the US Department of Labor, then a physical therapist helps injured or ill people improve their movement and manage their pain. A colleague of mine quotes “If doctors save lives, then a physical therapist makes it worth living”. When I ask my peers, many of them physiotherapists themselves will facetiously call physiotherapy some kind of massage or some other palliative modality. Others will say physiotherapy is rehab, like in the hospital, and exercise based rehab.
In my view, physiotherapists are masters of movement, and movement is an integral component of human health. We diagnose, and we treat movement disorders, which includes lack of movement, improper movement, over repetitive movement, loss of movement.
Lack of movement – This can involve those in hospitals recovering from in-hospital stay, injury or surgery. Lack of movement can also develop into pain and inability to perform certain or desired functions. Example diagnosis: ACL repair, trauma, etc.
Improper movement – This leads to imbalance of musculature, decreased functionality, and/or pain. Example diagnosis: shoulder impingement, IT Band syndrome, patellar-femoral syndrome, etc.
Over repetitive movement – This is usually combined with improper movement creating pain and inability to continue with movement. Example diagnosis: shoulder impingement, Achilles tendonitis, osteoarthritis, etc.
Loss of movement – I categorize this when neurological or physical restrictions cause movement loss, and it is often combined with lack of movement. Physiotherapy treats these disorders with compensatory strategies or assistance in return to as normal function as possible. Example diagnosis: CVA, amputee, developmental disorders, etc.
It may seem very limiting to categorize everything a physiotherapy treats to different movement disorders, but I think it helps to focus what our profession specializes. In a broader view, physios treat any human condition with physical interventions and modalities. You may see physios involved in different areas of medicine such as wound care, respiratory rehabilitation, and vestibular rehabilitation.
These are my thoughts. This is my first post. Please excuse the poor writing. I hope to improve as I post more.
