Haute Chef Founder Jeffrey Nimer Continues to Support Failed Proposition 37
Los Angeles, California Chef Jeffrey Nimer says that Prop 37 would have increased transparency between food supplier and food consumer; calls experimental nutrition “Frankenfoods.”
Jeffrey Nimer, founder of Haute Chefs and in-demand cuisine artist to celebrities and the affluent Los Angeles community, added his name in November 2012 to the ballot of 300+ celebrity chefs who support the now defunct Prop 37. Prop 37, explains Jeffrey Nimer, would have mandated the labeling of genetically modified foods. Also known as The Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, Prop 37’s intent was to inform the public of the source of their sustenance. Proposition 37 failed by a margin of less than 5 percent.
Mario Batali, Jeffrey Nimer, and Dan Barber were among the notable signees on the petition.
Lack of Data
According to Jeffrey Nimer, Prop 37 cites the lack of long-term data studies on the safety of continuous consumption of genetically modified food sources. Altered raw foods have gained popularity over the last two decades for their perceived superiority. Jeffrey Nimer says that these foods have an increased shelf life and produce higher crop yields. However, Jeffrey Nimer believes that their benefits may be outweighed by possible health complications from overconsumption. As of December of 2012, the World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace are among advocates of further testing.
Label Change
Jeffrey Nimer notes that opponents of the Bill seemed concerned that it was somehow intent on eliminating modified food from the market. In reality, Prop 37 was simply a call for proper labeling, explains Jeffrey Nimer. Supporter of the failed bill continue to insist that Californians, as well as the rest of the US population, should be aware of where their meal originated, whether it be organically farmed or modified for efficient production. Jeffrey Nimer has stated that he is not opposed to GMO’s, as genetically modified foods have now become known, he simply believes the lack of data could cause more harm to certain members of the population.
Challenges
With food suppliers nationwide on alert, Jeffrey Nimer claims that challenges were expected. Mosanto, one of the largest produce providers in the nation, opposed the bill and shelled out over $7 million to adversary groups. Other major donations were made by industry leaders including Coca-Cola and Kellogg. Jeffrey Nimer states that these opponents claimed Prop 37 would raise grocery prices for all consumers and create a negative stigma about contemporary food production methods.
Perhaps the biggest blow to the bill was the American Medical Associations’ statement claiming that there was no evidence pinning GMOs as the cause of any health condition. The AMA also claimed that the methodical labeling of GMOs would create consumer fear unless also accompanied by educational materials.
Jeffrey Nimer states that the AMA also suggests that genetically altered foods provide benefits traditionally grown crops do not, such as contributing to food related biotechnological advancements. Chef Jeffrey Nimer, along with hundreds of other chefs nationwide, continue to support this cause, citing freedom of information as a fundamental right to living in the United States.
