FusionFall Headcanons: Imaginary Energy Levels

Imaginary energy (IE) isn’t a new phenomena in the world of FusionFall, but it is extremely difficult to trace and there’s been little research conducted on it in the past.  From what people do know, however, it seems to be a blend of both science and magic.  Whether or not IE is particular to Earth and its lifeforms, it seems to flow heavily on the planet as a force of creation–greatly countering Planet Fusion’s destructive power and even breaking through the minds of Fusions based on Imaginary Friends.

if i cannot find duke thomas fics i will write them myself. this boy deserves them.

this fic is titled that which you cannot bear, featuring a handful of robins, the fact that the signal is both the most visible and the most isolated vigilante, and, eventually, some honesty about trauma. ch 1 is up now!

There is no backup for the Signal.

Duke reminds himself of this regularly, like a prayer through gritted teeth: there’s no one to catch him if he slips, to replace him if he stops. So the Signal can’t give up. Just can’t, like an immutable law, an undeniable truth. He has to win every fight. There isn’t any other option.

Duke Thomas makes himself invincible. Untouchable.

Then he loses.

A strange potion shop comes to your local farmers market. At first you just think it’s rare fruits used in a really good jam, but once the effects take hold you understand why everything at the stall was so expensive.

Reverse Robins but we include the Robin Collective has been eating my BRAIN bc it'd completely change the meaning and purpose of Robin.

So like. We all know Gotham is a shithole, and the leadership cares more about lining their own pockets than anything else. On the rare occassions they decide to take a look at the city, they sure don't look at the Narrows, the poor parts of Gotham. As a result, it's a hotbed for villain prototypes who, without a vigilante to rage against, just rage against the general population. Batman isn't a thing yet, and everyone in the Narrows knows nobody is going to help them but themselves.

Duke's parents are the victims of one of those proto-villains, and he spends time bouncing from foster home to foster home, quickly learning that if he doesn't help himself and the kids there, nobody will, being consumed by rage as he watches more and more kids pile in as nobody does anything to fight against the proto villains, regular criminals, and just general shittiness of the Narrows.

So he does something about it. It's pathetically easy to get the younger kids to trust in someone dressed in bright colours calling himself a superhero. Is he one? He doesn't know. All he knows is he's full of rage and wants to do something. So he steals food and distributes it to kids and families he knows need it, ferrets the kids in abusive foster homes away and cares for them in a secret location, foils as many proto villain plans he can, and finds that others join him. Mostly kids from the Narrows, who help ca ree for the kids with nowhere else to go, who set up support networks so less of them have to go into crime to survive, who overwhelm the proto villains with sheer numbers. As the movement grows, they become known as the one force of good in the poorer parts of Gotham, and kids from the richer parts, wanting to help and frustrated at seeing their parents do nothing, join them.

By the time Bruce comes back to Gotham to play Batman, he finds a thriving vigilante community made out of kids. It's impressive, and they're undeniably doing good, but it's also undeniably not sustainable. Proto villains are escalating to true villains, and casualties start coming in; hiding kids with nowhere to go works in the short term, but long term, they need documentation, better clothes, better homes, and, you know, actual parents. The Collective can't go on as it is, but without something to replace them, nobody is willing to stand down. And after so long on their own, they don't trust anyone.

And thus begin the negotiations. There is no real leader of the Collective, but as one of the first, Duke is one of the de facto leaders, and Batman seeks him out. With Duke as a representative, Batman and the Collective talk. At first, the collective thinks he's full of hot air, but Bruce Wayne's money starts pooring into the Narrows, setting up facilities that make aid easier to find and distribute, cracking down on the corruption in the foster system, setting up food banks and homeless shelters and free medical care with clean needles, etc. And Batman helps to fight the villains, and the Collective finds their casualties diminishing.

It's far from perfect, but it's steps in the right direction, and the Collective finds itself in the stage where it can stop its more dangerous activities, and become a more traditional community aid incentive. And it's willing to do so, but they don't trust things not to go back to the way they were once Batman takes his eyes off them, when he's gotten what he wants.

So Duke proposes making a Robin Batman's partner, and that's how he became the first Robin. It changes Robin's role from partner to Batman to a reminder to take care of the poorer and forgotten parts of the city, and a beacon of trust for those people. And if Batman breaks that trust, it's Robin's responsibility to stop him, or to turn his back on him and fight for the people.

CANNOT stop thinking about how this difference in framing and responsibility changes the Robin legacy mantle.

This whole Yellow arc reread I’ve been thinking to myself “can I, as a cis girl with relatively little knowledge of trans issues, write about whether or not ‘typical girl-disguised-as-a-boy plotline’ Yellow is trans?” but my god...there’s SO much subtext

(this mostly refers just to Yellow arc cus I’m not really familiar with the later arcs)

Spends the entire arc presenting masculine and (in English anyway) not correcting anyone when they’re referred to as “he,” “a boy,” etc. Particularly significant when you consider that Green told Yellow to hide their name and their gender so the bad guys wouldn’t figure out they were the Special Viridian Trainer, but then Yellow openly tells Lorelei their name AND that they’re from Viridian on like Day 1

When Yellow is revealed not to be a boy, it’s without their consent (hat knocked off during a fight to reveal a ponytail, Green telling Bill behind Yellow’s back) and Yellow is visibly uncomfortable, then continues presenting masculine through the end of the arc. I don’t really remember FireRed/Emerald and who all “knew Yellow’s secret” and how Yellow presented in front of em, but Yellow definitely continued presenting masculine in front of Red for literal years until AGAIN circumstances force a reveal without their consent (has to take their hat off for plot reasons).

Even if Yellow does actually present femme in front of people in later arcs, some transmasculine nonbinary people I know IRL have said that they got more comfortable presenting femme after they transitioned cus it no longer had the context of “being a woman” (ex: social expectations of women)

Like, presumably the “““real context””” from a meta POV is that Yellow presenting as a “boy” and then being revealed as a “girl” is specifically to surprise the reader and to recontextualize their feelings for Red from “boy admiring another boy” to “girl crushing on a boy,” but even aside from the easy trans readings of all of the above,

Yellow’s WHOLE ARC revolves around change

Yellow freaks out and starts crying when Rattata evolves because they’re afraid of change (I swear I remember some line where they were worried the Pokémon’s personality would change and they wouldn’t want to be friends anymore? But I can’t find it, so I might be mistaken)

Yellow quickly decides that Ratty is the same “person” even if their appearance changes, but still prevents their other Pokémon from evolving for as long as possible (fear of change / staying in the closet). Then of course the final battle involves all of their Pokémon evolving at once

At the end of the final battle, it’s said that Yellow’s powers transformed the raw energy into healing energy / life, which then also transforms Kanto’s entire landacape??

Hey y’all, I want to give a quick PSA. If you were thinking of reading We Are Robin for the first time to get to know Duke (which I highly recommend, it’s a fun little maxi series!) there’s something you gotta know tho

During the latter half, Jokers arc, the conflict culminates in the Jokers getting weapons (including guns) and holding a school hostage. Everything works out okay and the Robins stop them. But if you’re at all sensitive to school shooting situations (& esp given how many mass shootings have been getting a lot more publicity recently) then I’d recommend skipping it until you’re ready for it (& if you aren’t ever, that’s okay! It’s an arc I often have to skip over on my rereads and there’s no shame in keeping yourself safe)

Comics are a wonderful medium to explore a myriad of difficult topics, but as a consumer, you are not obligated to read about difficult subject matter until you decide if/when you want to do so. This is one of the more obvious examples that I can warn for, especially given that it’s a topic fresh on my mind at the moment. I’m going to be working on a master page of content warnings soon to go along with the Duke reading rec list. If anyone wants to help me out with that, please feel free to dm me.

A pretty Known Duke Fact™️ is that he’s kind of a fantasy nerd! How WOULD Duke handle being placed in a fantasy setting?

Day 4 - The Bat, Signal (Meme/Free Day)

Ahh, our Favorite Bat, Signal… Here’s a day that’s open for any and all Duke content!

Day 5 - Parents

Family is very important for Duke, his parents most of all. Here’s a day to explore what Duke’s parents mean to him!
