Ethics in Photojournalism Task
Research-Â
Find out as much as you can about the image and the context of the image, i.e. when it was taken, what was happening around the situation?-
The image Fire escape collapse also known as Fire on Marlborough Street was taken in 1975 by Stanley Foreman. There had been a fire in the building so a nineteen-year-old woman and her niece and God daughter waited on the rescue team to aid them down from the fire escape. But as the fireman climbed the ladder, the escape collapses, sending them hurdling past five stories through the air, the moment Foreman captures the image. The woman fell to her death, but her niece survived due to the landing cushioned by the woman's body.
What are the ethical implications of taking this photograph?-
The ethical implications are it could be said that foreman could have intervened, done something to help like attempt to catch or cushion their fall.
What was the reaction from others at the time? -
People were angry. As it circulated newspapers starting with the Boston Herald, people said it was an invasion of the women's privacy. It did however cause Boston officials to change their fire safety rules and laws. Other cities used the image to make similar changes and promote fire safety.
Why did people react this way at that time? Â
I think people reacted this way because the immediate reaction in human nature is to help others. Back in the 70âs collectivism was still quite popular in the states, so people naturally stick together and tend to hold their morals the same. Communities likely were tight knit and wanted to protest an individual whose immediate reaction was to pull out a camera in someone's last moments.
What has changed?
Nowadays, I think more people appreciate images like this being caught, people offer more varying opinions and some now realise the importance of real photographs. These days a lot of photographs are digitally manipulated, we need to see real people and real issues, its more valued than it was back then.
Would this photograph have the same impact now? Why or why not? Â
I think it would, as morbid as it is, death is timeless. A person last moments will always be shocking and cut deep for a lot of people. Although a lot of people are numb to gore and death these days, the reaction of the child face brings back the ârealness elementâ.
What would you have done in this situation?
Helped, I think my initial reaction would be to help. I wouldnât think of taking a photograph freely. Maybe if it was a job, it was my job to take these images I possibly could but I would still feel the need to intervene.
Would this photograph have the same impact now?
I think this photo would have a similar impact in todayâs society as it shows a great sense of pain in such a young victim that many people would be able to show sympathy with and feel sorry for.
Why or why not?Â
I think the reason why the impact today would be similar is because as humans we can see pain in a timeless manner. when people look at this image they can feel the pain the young girl would have been going through this is something that doesnât really change with time
What would you have done in this situation?
In this situation I I think I would have taken a very similar approach as it doesnât hide or cover anything up it shows the situation in quite a raw and untouched way.

^ Using Adobe bridge to correct exposure, highlights, shadows and lines. I prefer the softer look so I warm the image and lighten the shadows. I also used the geometry tool to straighten the image using the building in the background.
^ on photoshop, I create a new layer for dodge and burn . This means I can have more control over the exposure and focus of the image and know exactly what layers use what tools, it makes everything much easier to use.
I use the Bridge>Basics>Geometry>Photoshop>copy layer>dodge>burn process for all of my images, and will highlight on anything else I use when necessary.
