Day-to-night: Police Station
This is the old police station and court house on Waterloo Street in Ironbridge, Shropshire. It was built in 1862 in an Italianate style, with blue bricks and white brick and stone dressings, by a local builder and architect, Samuel Nevett. Similar buildings were built by him in the Ironbridge Gorge with a similar style. Until recently, it was a very fine Indian restaurant called Pondecherry, but…

If the colour ain't right...: Mission church
I firmly believe that the best black-and-white photographs are those that are taken specifically for that genre. However, there is also a common saying: “If the colour ain’t right, go black & white” Actually, I’m not sure that it is a common saying, but the image here is a case in point. It has been lying on my hard drive for a couple of years; there was something about it I liked, but the…

Day-to-night: Craven Dunnill
Following on from my last Secret Ironbridge: Open Wide post, here is the nearby Craven Dunnill Encaustic Tile Works, which was purpose-built at Jackfield, in the Ironbridge Gorge, in 1872. Its formidable appearance lent itself well to this Harry Potter type processing, complemented by the bird that helpfully sat on the roof as I took the shot.

Droning on
I am new to the world of drone flying, purchasing my first ever unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) just a month ago. I therefore thought it may be useful to share some of my learning points: Flying theory: Make sure that you understand the rules and regulations regarding the operation and flying of a drone. (see my post: Drone Rules OK). Read and understand the Drone and Model Aircraft…

Secret Ironbridge: Open wide
If you drive through the village of Jackfield, you will come to a dog-leg in the road as you cross, what was once, the Great Western Railway line. This level-crossing is claimed, at 38 feet (11.5 metres), to be the widest in Britain. Although the railway line opened in 1862, it is likely that the wide gates were added later, as industry in the area expanded. The current gates remain as a feature…

Day-to-night: Unspoilt by progress
The subject of this image is the Boat Inn at Jackfield in the Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire, probably best known for being flooded by the River Severn every time it bursts its banks in the winter. Talking of ‘banks’, the title of this blog comes from the sign above the door, testament that it was once tied to the Banks’s brewery, and this was its motto. Another day-to-night image, post-processed…

Drone Rules OK
Since owning a drone, the most common questions I get regard the rules and authorisations required to fly one. They can be complicated and ambiguous, so I have tried to simplify them below. Please note that the rules below apply in the UK for the Open Category and may differ in other parts of the world. The Open category covers flying operations with low risk to third parties. Morning mist on…

The White Hart
It was a shot that I had planned for weeks. Late in the evening I set up my tripod and tucked into a corner of the pavement to keep out of the way of any drunken revellers. The courtyard of the public house was thronging with an unexpectedly large crowd of people, constantly moving around, and the sky was overcast, covered with a thick layer of cloud. It looked as if my plans had come to nothing.…

Secret Ironbridge: Wallace, but no Gromit
As I mentioned in a previous post; Secret Ironbridge – Great Western Railway, in 2003 I embarked on a project to photograph all 25 of the bridges in the Ironbridge Gorge. Only one of them is no longer standing, but the remains of its abutments can still just be seen, not far from the Maws tile works in Jackfield (see Secret Ironbridge – Maw or less). The bridge itself was the victim of land…

When is 48MP not 48MP?
This is a topic that creates some very heated exchanges on social media – and it involves the claims by the manufacturers of drones, and mobile phones, that their resolution is as high, if not higher, than many DSLR or mirrorless cameras. The contentious point is that they use a Quad Bayer sensor, where each photosite is divided into four (the data then being combined using a process known as…

Taking flight
As I research the content for my Secret Ironbridge series, I often pore over old maps to find additional points of interest to supplement the main subject. It is then interesting to compare that view with the modern day, but Google Maps, although very useful, simply isn’t of a high enough resolution to see the detail I am looking for. Therefore I decided to purchase an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle…

Secret Ironbridge: A nasty accident
In 1898 the local newspaper carried a report of a nasty accident that occurred to a young girl on a bicycle in Jackfield: On Saturday Miss Milly Pritchard of Ellsmere met with a serious accident. It appears that Miss Pritchard (who was on a visit at Mrs Doughty’s, Tuckies House) went for a bicycle ride with Miss Doughty, proceeding from the Tuckies House down the road leading from the Dingle to…

Painting with light: A trick of the light
So, ‘that’s a wrap”, as I believe they say in the film industry. This is the final post in my Painting with light series, but before I sign off, here are some advanced tips and tricks to make your Painting with light stand out from the crowd: Don’t just shine your torch whilst standing behind your camera; the image will look flat and 2-dimensional. Move to the sides and paint the light from…
