The concept of Afrophobia- Xenophobia
Tumblr media
Observation: The past two weeks South Africa has been facing the crises of afrophobia and xenophobic attacks. The term “afrophobia” has been used quite extensively as well in light of the tragic deaths of foreign nationals and death of innocent female victims of SA.  Afrophobia is actually irrational fear of black people or people of African descent. By virtue of this definition, this would be an incorrect term to use to describe the current attacks on foreign national of late.
Aside from the use of these terms, I realised that South African citizens are not clear on what reasons beyond financial gain that some foreigners have taken refuge in this country. This points to the lack of defining what different foreign nationals purpose is and this can be derived from the naming of them to understanding the reason of their presence in the country.
A migrant; this defines a person moving from one place to the next in search of employment or a better life. This can be likened more often to our neighbouring countries like Botswana and Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
An immigrant; it is defined as a person who comes to live in a foreign country on a permanent basis. Immigrants can also be referred to as transnational citizens.
An emigrant: can be defined as a person moving from a place in hopes of spiritual upliftment. Almost uprooting from one form of spiritual practices to another in a foreign country. This is often likened to popular examples like the Congolese transnational immigrants and some Chinese residents.
Why? All three concepts speak to the reasoning why South Africa and many other parts of the world have issues with imperfect systems of documenting foreign citizens coming in and out of the country. Not only are the reasons ever changing, the needs begin to grow more and more. I find disgruntled South African citizens have not quite opened up their minds to understand these reasons and because of that they settle for terms like “makwerekwere”.
What happens next?
There’s key points that one can use to aid the cancer of Xenophobia. Encourage legislation that combats xenophobia. So formulation of laws that deal directly with foreign nationals. Having hate crimes be dealt with through prosecution. Direct lawful punishment for perpetrators that perpetuate physical crimes and hate speech to foreign nationals. Accountability needs to be placed in the forefront of all attacks.
Training law enforcement to deal with situation of this calibre. In the schooling system it would be ideal to craft educational curricula that celebrate diversity and encourage tolerance for cultures of difference. Creating non-profit organisations that bring enlightenment to communities that lack knowledge especially through rallies. When crucial decisions are made, it would be a good idea to include the marginalized community members. This will get everyone in the community on the same page.
Journalists are perfect for information distribution. Blogs, online portals, community newspapers and news magazines would play a crucial part in condemning Xenophobia and getting the message across effectively.
Proper documentation of every foreign national
Future/Ramifications: The economy may decline in progress and profit. Resources and talents of foreign nationals may be pulled out of the country. Sanctions may barr the country from progressing and moving forward…the country would lose credit from foreign investors. Different parts of the world will cease to do business with our country.

The rise of OrijinCulture
Tumblr media
Observation: Orijin Culture brand is a fashion creation of a range of tribal wear in celebration of the unique African culture and lifestyle. All the products are 100& hand crafted. The name of the brand is a play between to concepts of “originality” and “origin”.  The founder of the brand is ARCHYN ORIJIN who refers to himself as an Afropreneur.
The brand is predominantly known for its eccentric african map shaped bags made from leather. Currently on the rise and an authentic symbol of the African culture.
Why? The brand is structured around the celebration of African brands. It appears to ward off questioning the authenticity of African brands and give them equal attention as the rest of society would for Western brands.
Future: The brand has expended itself as more than just fashion but a lifestyle. Every product is made to “africanise” modern designs like face-painting is created on already hand-crafted eyewear.
‘’ Inspired by African Tribal Art Makeup - A historical art of painting patterns on our faces and bodies, Orijin Culture introduces ORIJIN TRIBAL EYEWEAR Collection; A one of a kind Luxury designer Eyewear preserving our art and culture of Tribal beautification. The ‘Brown Print’ on the Eyewear signifies Earth, the beginning of life, the roots of us. ‘’ SOURCED FROM orijinstore.com

South Africa in the limelight
Observation: In the past couple of weeks South African creatives have been acknowledged for various crafts by  being nominated for prominent international awards, performing at international stages and even winning prominent recognition.
1. The River is nominated for an Emmy
Tumblr media
The Soap Opera that airs weekdays on 1Magic, DStv channel 103, at 8 pm or streaming on Showmax. The South African soap Opera has been nominated for an Emmy Award under the Best Telenovela category.
2. Maxhosa designs to be modeled by Miss South Africa at New York Fashion Week
Tumblr media
Laduma Ngxokolo who is the designer and founder for Maxhosa Africa knitwear will be collaborating with new beauty queen Zozibini Tunzi at the New York fashion week. Maxhosa who has dressed the likes of Beyonce and Alicia Keys will be showcasing his work. Maxhosa whose brand celebrates Africans will theme his showcase as “we are kings and queens”.
Zozibini who is the first black beauty queen to wear her natural hair was honoured to be a part of this journey and represent South Africa greatly as one of the greats too.
3. South African based choir come second in America’s got talent
Tumblr media
The Ndlovu Youth choir which is originally from South Africa  went to represent SA and came out second in America’s Got Talent reality show. The spirits were high and they were welcomed back home on the 20th of September.
Why are all these stories relevant? It would seem that most if not all the creative content makers, performers and actors still attribute major success on a global scale. It almost appears as if their products or services needed to internationally recognised from them to feel a level of success. This may well be because South African platforms are either not enough or none at all. So instead of creating platforms people flea in search of success in other parts of the world.
Future: If more local content is pushed and funded then many creative content creators would see hubs of opportunities being born. Local performers would not seek success outside the gates of SA.

Open Letters a growing trend
Observation: In the past 5 years there’s been a growing trend of open letters from various public figures voicing out their thoughts on copious amounts of topics. In 2015 Ntsiki Mazwai whose been famously infamous for throwing public jabs on twitter to celebrities and public political figures. In her 2015 open letter about Africanism. She questioned black Africans on why they embrace western forms of beauty by bleaching their skins and wearing weaves as opposed to wearing their natural hair. The idea of “unAfrican”!
Tumblr media
In 2019 actress and broadcaster Vatswa Ndara wrote an open letter to the minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa. Essentially calling out the exploitation of actors and actresses in the entertainment industry.
Tumblr media
Why? From these two examples and many more others it appears that the industry stars are beginning to protest in the form of open letters as opposed to marching the streets for their voices to be heard.
Future: The digitalisation of protest is on the rise. It’s becoming apprent that in order for the voices of many to be heard open letters are the future of marching in South Africa.
