Allure Korea July 2017 | Choi Minho
Tumblr media
(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost/erros in the translation. Also, there are sentences that got paraphrased. Thank you and enjoy!)
Q: You’re about to leave. Did your visit to Maldives meet your expectations? Minho: Everything is nice. It was nice to see turtles when snorkeling. Following manta ray and scuba diving were fun. Lastly, taking seabob was pretty fun too. As expected, it was good to have mojito in Maldives. When I did the photoshoot, the weather was pretty good that I got drawn by the atmosphere when doing it. Everything is just a good memory. It’s unforgettable.
Q: Originally, your nickname was flaming charisma, right? I wanted to call you flaming stamina. Your tanned skin is visible after doing water activities. Minho: I actually wanted to get tanned. I should’ve gotten more tanned, so it’s too bad I wasn’t able to. I think my stamina is certainly better than others. When I’m with other people, they all are tired although I don’t really feel tired. It may be because we do performances many times that our stamina naturally becomes better?
Q: You came here with Onew. How was the other members’ reactions? Minho: We both talk a lot, and it was great that we both came here together. I asked him to come here again next time. I didn’t show off to them, but they must be jealous inside. Haha!
Q: You’re in the middle of concert tour now, is everything going smoothly? Minho: It’s a very long tour, but it’s nice to meet fans from concerts. I gain strength when I perform, so I’m always thankful to my fans.
Q: Do you see your fans’ face and expression from the stage? Minho: I can see them very clearly and we make eye contact too. I put on in-ears, so I can’t hear what they say well. I take off my in-ears during performance when I really can’t hear or when I want to hear my fans voice. There are a lot of times when I want to hear my fans cheer louder so I take off my in-ears.
Q: It’s been 9 years since you debuted together. Isn’t it amazing? Minho: We didn’t really think that it’s amazing, but the people around us said that it’s a big thing. There are words that idol’s life-span is 5 years or 7 years. Without troubles and worries, we have passed that phase safely. If you ask what are the tips, honestly there is nothing to say. We know what we are good at and what we don’t like, so we understand  each other and are considerate of each other.
Q: Your 9th year anniversary happened on the day when you’re here, right? Minho: Ah, I was very touched by the cake. May 25 is a very special number to me. It’s like a day I was born again? I always think of it as my 2nd birthday. My debut day is unforgettable.
Q: What did you say to the members? Minho: Before we came here, I asked them to go for a drink together and we all had the same thought. We said something like, ‘Although it’s hard and it can be exhausting, let’s work hard’. We don’t really do cheesy talk. We already understand without needing to say it to each other.

Allure Korea July 2017 | Lee Jinki
Tumblr media
(T/N: Please note that there might be something lost / errors in the translation. Thank you and enjoy!)
Q: This is your last night in Maldives. What are the most memorable things? Onew: First is playing outside. The nature is very very beautiful. Thanks to the villa I’m staying in I could see the ocean just by sitting leisurely, and I also could see it just by opening the curtain. In the morning or at night, my mind got calm when I saw the ocean from my villa. Next is doing sea activities. I didn’t know I could see a turtle this close!
Q: The villa is nice, right? Although the wind sound is a bit loud sometimes due to monsoon. Onew: I saw stingray come and go. The water level changes every hour. I get to know how deep is the water.
Q: What’s a good point of Minho as your travel buddy? Onew: As you see, Minho is always full of energy. I don’t know what I should do so I can’t decide. But Minho organizes the things that he wants to do. Minho’s good point, but also a weak point is that he has too much energy. (laughs)
Q: What did you put inside your suitcase? Onew: I brought four white t-shirts. I always leave some space.
Q: You’re still touring right? What concert is it? Onew: It’s overseas concert and we want to show it in high quality just like what we did in Korea.
Q: You’re a concert veteran now, right? Are you still nervous when coming on the stage? Onew: No matter how many times I’ve experienced it, I’m always concerned about maintaining my stamina. However, I always fail at the first show. There is a moment where I burst out my energy explosively that I become so exhausted. Different situations also occur when I do the same performance several times, but I overcome them all as I exchange gaze with the members.
Q: Do you understand each other only by looking at their eyes now? Onew: Not everything, but I think Minho kind of knows. (laughs)
Q: Yesterday was your 9th debut anniversary right? How was the past 9 years? Onew: It’s short if it’s short, and it’s long if it’s long… I think the strongest point of a team is that it continues to exist. Our affection grows as we undergo things together over time.
Q: How have the members grown up? Onew: I think everyone has grown up into a good direction. As each of us are trying to find ourselves, individually, our area of capabilities have gradually become bigger. We gain synergy because of that.
Q: It seems that you care about the other members more because you’re the oldest? Onew: I just listen to them when they tell me something. I also whine a lot. Since we’ve been together for over 10 years, there are days when they are like the hyung, and there are also days when I’m like the hyung.
Q: When is the time when you feel it’s nice to have done this career for 9 years? Onew: Because we’re no longer rookies, it’s nice that we’re able to match each other.
Q: Is ‘A team that is always trustworthy’ a thing that comes across your mind when you think of SHINee? They’re like perfectionist at their performances and songs. Onew: Haha! When I’m working hard on a performance there are times when I don’t think much about it when it’s near the last stage.

[TRANS] Taemin IZE Interview
Tumblr media
※ Do not re-translate
It must feel different now compared to when you first came out as solo Taemin: First of all, when my first mini album [ACE] was released I was somewhat impatient and since it was my first time there were a lot of things that I didn’t know. Even during the preparation of the album, I practiced the choreography and did recording following orders but for this full album [Press It] I participated a lot. From the selection of the tracks to the general direction of the album, lyrics, choreography and writing of the lyrics. I tried to find my own identity. So I felt much more burden and responsibility compared to my mini album.
So did you think about the colour of solo Taemin’s, not as SHINee?
Taemin: Yes. SHINee is a such a great team and I have pride in that but I wanted to find my own colour. Finding an identity as Taemin not as SHINee, I always hope that later on when we’re as SHINee each and every colours of our members come together and create a synergy.
So what is the identity that you found?
Taemin: I hope it’s a music that doesn’t overlap with others no matter who listens to it. These days, I think there’s somewhat a less of individuality in the music industry. I tried to collect songs that I can do best to find my own colour despite of that and tried to make an album.
I think you found more of Taemin’s style in the performance part in particular. You danced with the dancers during ‘Danger’ but now there are parts when you have to hold the stage alone.
Taemin: To be honest, there are a lot of performances that SHINee has to do without the dancers and it’s not easy either. However to be on stage alone feels different than having all 5 members. I can feel absence of the members a lot and parts I have to fill instead. So there’s a goal that I set, later on I want to do a stage where there’s no dancers from start to end. I am receiving a lot of help because I’m not good enough yet right now, but I will definitely try one day.
The moment when the dancers disappear and you’re alone during ‘Drip Drop’ and ‘Press Your Number’, what feelings did you want to convey?
Taemin: When dancers are with me, the energy increases as much. During the part when they disappear, all the eyes are focused on me so I tried to be more absorbed emotionally than increasing the energy. Something new that I realized after doing numerous of concerts is rather than doing the choreography as exactly as how I learned it it’s more important to be immersed in it. Although I am still lacking, ‘Press Your Number’ is an emotional song so I tried to express that as much as I can and for ‘Drip Drop’ I tried to capture its dreamlike atmosphere.
The beat of ‘Drip Drop’ changes continuously, where did you put the emphasis in for its choreography?
Taemin: Every song has an introduction, development, turn and a conclusion. The choreography was formed to suit its narrative rather than just working hard from start to end. Above all, I requested the dancers to ‘form the choreography thinking that I’m a dancer not a singer’.
I wondered whether your muscles are okay because it’s a performance you have to play so well to its beat.
Taemin: Perhaps when I get older it’ll be more difficult (laughs)
I am curious whether your body feels different compared to 8 years ago
Taemin: I know my age is not an age to feel something like that yet but I do feel that parts that I sometimes get injured become stiff. Getting injured to parts that already has an injury. Having no choice but to use those muscles.
Your job is something that involves exhausting a lot of your energy not only physically but mentally too. How are you like after finishing your stage.
Taemin: I try to adjust my condition when I’m doing concerts but for music shows, I only go three of four times at the most. So I spend all my energy unsparingly. My appearance will look different from when I come down from stage during concerts and from music shows. It is tiring.
Where do you gain back your energy?
Taemin: First of all, maybe because I’m so close with the staffs I get comfortable when I get to spend time talking to them after stage. I receive help from people around me. Lots of people around me including managers talk a lot to me.
When you appeared on [4 Things Show] just before your promotion of [ACE], you said you’ll prove that you’ll do well on your own too. Do you think you’ve proved sufficiently?
Taemin: This is something really subjective, but when I said “I will prove it”, it was something I said to myself because I was lacking confidence. Something like a promise to myself. Perhaps it’s my greed but there are things that I’m unsatisfied with this album. I worked hard but it’s only natural to feel like that.
But I think you’ve become more natural in communicating with fans not only on stage but outside of stage too.
Taemin: When I’m with SHINee members, since there’s 5 people there’s a lack of time to convey each and every member’s thoughts. I don’t talk much as there are members who talk well but for solo promotion I have to sympathize and communicate with fans on my own. So I try to approach as an honest side of Taemin.
When you won on music shows, your eyes kept going to the audience seats too.
Taemin: There’s something I realized. Performance is definitely something that’s ‘shown’ but I think singer is someone who delivers the sensibility of the music, lyrics and dance to people. There are a lot of people who dance well but what separates artists from just normal singers is how well they can communicate with the audience. I set what I think as an ideal musician as a goal and paid a lot of attention to that. I wanted to deliver to the audience the feelings that I feel when I’m immersed into the song.
Did you succeed that even on stages like KBS [Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook] where there are more general audience than fans
Taemin: General audience, especially, watch the stage calmly than getting excited. That was pretty hard (laughs) I tend to express well when I release energy and receive as much feedback…. I think I will have to drag the emotion out of those people if I want to be a real professional. It’s still something I have to work on.
You said you learned how to be not nervous during V-App before your comeback.
Taemin: I’m more relaxed because I was able to prepare for this album longer compared to the first one. And my personality is introverted so when I said ‘I know how to be not nervous’ I probably meant I will do with confidence.
How do you think you’ve gained your confidence?
Taemin: You cannot ignore the years of experience. Even though I’m introverted, I think I gained confidence as the years of working as SHINee and as solo increased. Whether it be stage or something else, it’s not something that’s solely done on my own. It’s a mixture of the circumstances at the time and the responses of the audiences. Appearing on tvN [SNL Korea], if it were in the past I would be worried about showing up as ugly or receiving funny articles but now I think I’ve become more understanding. I’ve become more comfortable. I think I felt the need to be more honest; looking funny when I have to. Rather than worrying about my image, I wanted to show a side of myself according to the situation.
So did you learn how to let go of the guilty conscience from mistakes too.
Taemin: No (laughs) This is the problem…. I have a timid personality so when I make mistakes or things I’m not satisfied with I think about that repeatedly. Due to this habit I was able to grow but in other way I was having a hard time because of it.
But it must feel special to hold a stage that you created after 9 years of debut
Taemin: To be honest, from my point of view I’m still not good enough. I can see the unsatisfactory parts on my own but fans and people around tell me that my power on stage is great. It’s so thankful. I know they watched the stage well but I can’t agree with it. That part is hard.
From an audience’s point of view, we get curious on ‘What will he do next time if he creates such a perfect stage now?’ but you must feel like there’s a lot of work left to do.
Taemin: There are people who have reached top place in terms of music or performance. I compare myself with them and see what I lack endlessly.
Then for this album do you put only so much meaning as ‘having formed your own style compared to last time’.
Taemin: Actually there’s one more thing that I set as a goal. It’s something I never told anywhere else… I think the current music industry is focused more on songs that are easy to listen. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I wanted to bring up the attention of performance oriented music that you can ‘see’ as well as solo performers to the surface.
You’ve said that you’re not good enough so many times today (laughs) Is there something you want to compliment yourself
Taemin: It’s really a personal thought, Ah, can I say this with my own mouth? (laughs) People around me tell me that there’s something about me that attracts people. There are so many good staffs but rather than buying something to them I have a genuinely thankful heart to each and every one of them. I think we become more close because they all feel that.
I think fans must feel the same too.
Taemin: I really thank my fans because they really like me. They always support me hard and I receive a lot of energy from them on music shows and particularly during Dome concerts the yells of fans were so loud I could literally feel it. I can never forget that thrill.
How is it like to watch that kind of (enthusiastic) audience from stage
Taemin: When I watch the audience… I think that’s the reason I do this. (laughs)
