some thoughts on the cousin bonding ending in scarlet hollow, spoilers below

One thing I find kind of odd is how often people talk about how Joan's murder will affect Reese but no one talks about how Reese's murder will affect Tabitha. When she first rounds the corner and shoots him it makes sense for her as she's only reacting in that moment, and I appreciate her defending her cousin no questions asked, but when you let her or encourage her to kill him things turn dark fast. I've seen it said that she only saw him as a monster, and I certainly think she'll tell herself that to cope, but the fallout doesn't reflect that. Joan cries when you kill him. Stella cries when you tell her. MC can cry and Tabitha can even comfort you. I hesitate to say that Joan loved Reese because that gets into how do you define love from an abuser, but the fact remains that she is affected deeply by his death. He was human, a person who was loved and will be missed by the people in his life. Tabitha even says "I always knew there was something off about that kid" *that kid* because she only knew Reese when they were children. On top of everything it's an extremely gruesome death, the hardest to stomach in the game so far imo as you're essentially watching a person be tortured for several minutes. I just don't think you can walk away from that without any mental scars on your psyche. And like Joan's death I believe Reese's death will haunt the narrative. Not as obviously as losing the only doctor in town but more the human cost, especially if more people find out, which is likely because Reese has been involved so much. He's the first person Stella tries to introduce you to, when Stella and Kaneeka are at the library they say one thing is missing: Reese. As much as Tabitha might believe that he wasn't important, he was to the people around him. I love the memes about Tabitha being a girlboss as much as the next person but something I think gets lost is that she doesn't want to be that woman. She doesn't want to hurt Stella, she doesn't want to be a cruel boss, she doesn't want to be her mother. But where is she here? Burning a man to death after shooting him with *Pearlanne's gun*.

This seriously needs to be completely redrawn. I really messed up on Stella's look, but I'm happy with the designs for younger Reese and Kaneeka. I only had a teeny tiny photo of them as kids to work with.

The funniest thing from Ep4 is that Reese was so fucking bored with his life that when he saw the Cousin breaking into his house with madness in their eyes, crying about some random wall, his first reaction was "OMG FINALLY SOMETHING IS HAPPENING", followed by gleefully giving an axe to weird stranger he met literally the day before

Everything I love about Kaneeka

Kaneeka gets way too much hate in the Scarlet Hollow fandom and I was going to share some thoughts on her childhood and compare it to Tabitha's and how that affects how they interact, but frankly enough has been said about that. Instead I wanted to talk about some things that I love about Kaneeka:

~ her conversations about aliens are so delightful and I love how much fun she has talking about it even stopping herself if she gets too into it

~ I love that she'll tell off Tabitha for dragging you back to the car on day 2. even though I love Tabitha, Kaneeka is right that dragging a full adult to the car when they're in the middle of a conversation is incredibly disrespectful and I appreciate her saying so.

~ in fact she's the only person in the town to call out Tabitha's mean behavior to anyone. when Tabitha enters Oscar's home and immediately insults him and boasts about the Scarlets owning all the property in town Kaneeka rightfully tells her to cut it out.

~ if you're scared when meeting Wayne during your investigation and want to stop Stella will tell you to keep going and Kaneeka will tell her to respect your boundary and that if you're scared you can stop

~ if you insult Reese's art she sticks up for him and gives him genuine compliments.

~ she's the only person to call out red flags about Joan Kelly's abusive behavior (this one is rare I can't remember how I got this dialogue)

~ when Pastor Daniel asks to speak to you alone she looks out for you and makes sure he knows she is. yeah he might just be cursed but she doesn't know that, she just knows that some guy she doesn't trust wants her friend alone and she's not going to let that happen.

~ when Avery theorizes that you might be a magical catalyst Kaneeka will protect you, knowing full well that if things get worse people might start blaming you

In conclusion Kaneeka is a wonderful character and I wish people would give her more of a chance. There's a reason even Tabitha admits she respects her, she's a sweetheart who will defend her friends to the bitter end.
