"A story doesn't need a theme in order to be good" I'm only saying this once but a theme isn't some secret coded message an author weaves into a piece so that your English teacher can talk about Death or Family. A theme is a summary of an idea in the work. If the story is "Susan went grocery shopping and saw a weird bird" then it might have themes like 'birds don't belong in grocery stores' or 'nature is interesting and worth paying attention to' or 'small things can be worth hearing about.' Those could be the themes of the work. It doesn't matter if the author intended them or not, because reading is collaborative and the text gets its meaning from the reader (this is what "death of the author" means).

Every work has themes in it, and not just the ones your teachers made you read in high school. Stories that are bad or clearly not intended to have deep messages still have themes. It is inherent in being a story. All stories have themes, even if those themes are shallow, because stories are sentences connected together for the purpose of expressing ideas, and ideas are all that themes are.

So I went and had a look at how old Mikbell is for Reasons and because it’s very funny to me

He’s 22

“Oh 7 year age difference isn’t that long” it is when it’s almost 20% of your life, but isn’t when you’re unionising

Cuz see here’s the thing: Mikbell’s attitude towards Chilchuck is pretty fucking standard anti-union propaganda that bosses like to spread to workers

“They just want a cut of your money, you don’t need them, why would you share the profits of your hard work”

It’s also a complete and 1000% ignorance of the reason the union was started in the first place: people were literally using half-foots including Chilchuck himself as monster bait

Chilchuck made himself boss of all the half-foots on the island because he has Chronic Dad Disease and no one else was going to stop them from being mulched for profit

This is also why he always demands pay upfront, not after the job is over

Now, we don’t actually know when Mikbell reached the Island relative to Chilchuck, but since Chilchuck worked there as an adventurer long enough to be jaded, start a union, and become ubiquitous? It’s been a while

It’s also been long enough that a good chunk of the other half-foots cannot be original members, because they’d definitely have known about the succubus trap thing; starting unions is fucking hard work and people need to very clearly understand why they need the union, or you just get the Mikbell situation where no one bothers

Those original members would have told Mikbell exactly goddamn why they need that union and why they’re lucky as hell to have Chilchuck

They formed the union. They know exactly why it’s important

Now, we don’t know how much of Mikbell’s continued existence is pure luck of having met Kabru first instead of a succubus hunter party (or similar) vs how much is just the direct result of Chilchuck’s unionising having changed the Island’s work culture so that exploiting half-foots like that is no longer done

But hooooooo-boy does he look like a lucky little shit for having survived blowing off the guild that was specifically and recently formed to stop people mulching them for money long enough to be a dick about it

I think the funniest dynamic for arranged-marriage royalty would be a queen who came here 100% prepared to murder her future husband and rule as a widow queen in her own right, only to discover that the king is autistic as hell and responds to her wish to rule with "oh thank god please do, I don't want to be bothered by these people. I can just tell them to go bother you instead, if you really want that. I've got beetles I wanted to study."

i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return
