Hey so if you destroy the SteelWatch and have Karlach with you when you confront Gortash, he puts the blame almost entirely on her and tells Tav/Durge to call her off so they can still work together

(If you show up without her he just yells at you for breaking all of his things before saying he’s going to murder you)

And now I’m stuck here thinking about how 1. He is absolutely aware of how bad having an angry Karlach in the room is for him and is surprisingly willing to forgive Tav/Durge toppling his empire of murder robots to get her off of himself

And 2. Something about him actively making excuses for a Durge because of course I’m thinking about that

Edit: Just to be clear! You still can’t actually side with him- you can tell Karlach to relax, but she’ll initiate combat regardless of dialogue choices

#yeah that was actually pretty fascinating to me on my first playthru #literally went thru that conversation 3 or 4 times

spoilerssss i guess?? i haven't gone too far in my durge playthrough yet but ive been seeing that them and gortash have some history and ill be honest i think gortash is kind of a loser and i love bullying him but in the context of him and durge being doomed evil ex-lovers... mmm yes im listening very closely nodding my head aggressively i understand i get it yes yes yes

My cat woke me up at 3am and I woke up with this scene in my head:

Gortash beaten, tied up, his netherstone taken. Redeemed Durge standing over him refusing to kill him. Durge vows to free him from Bane’s hold. Gortash scoffs at the idea. Impossible. Durge kneels down and looks the defeated tyrant in the eye. “I was formed from Bhaal’s flesh. His blood ran in my veins. His vile thoughts infected my mind. I was his bloodied blade all my life, but I denied him. Bhaal has no hold over me anymore. If I can deny the god who created me, you can be free of the god who would enslave you.”

What if Gortash never could've raided Mephistopheles without the Dark Urge?

But not because devils are powerful. Not because the Dark Urge is a horrifying, busted ass combination of a paladin and a storm sorceror, no.

What if he was genuinely afraid of who he'd become if he entered the hells again? What if he was terrified of finding that frightened little boy he abandoned so long ago, what if he couldn't bear the thought of resurrecting that pitiful house slave of Raphael's, who died long ago, and good riddance?

but he knew he had to face that fear, or else he'd never be free of it. he just couldn't do it until he met the Dark Urge.

because they made him feel strong.

And they were so fearless, so determined, so eager for devil blood, that he said I'm not going to be brave.

I'm going to be fearless. I'm going to be ruthless. I am going to prove myself worthy of being by their side, as their equal.

As long as they are beside me, I am fearless.

And it's a little private joke of his, when he sees the Dark Urge again.

And says "you can be my equal."

They will never know it, but becoming their equal was something he is very proud of.

Typical breakfast conversation is Gortash fishing out the mornings newspapers and reading the names from the obituary.

Durge just immediately responds: yes, no, no, yes, yes, yes, maybe, to the ones they have & haven’t killed.

Gortash doesn’t even need to ask they just do it automatically based off this sort of unhinged energy they have.
