Fun Fact
Pressing J while looking at a Tumblr blog or home feed will scroll up on the page, pressing K will scroll down. This is helpful considering a lot of the Tumblrs feature infinite scrolling.

Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn鈥檛 making enough money, so they鈥檙e shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of its customers acquired effective July 1.

Customers will receive refunds.

This puts the difference between DRM-locked media and unencumbered media into sharp contrast. I have bought a lot of MP3s over the years, thousands of them, and many of the retailers I purchased from are long gone, but I still have the MP3s. Likewise, I have bought many books from long-defunct booksellers and even defunct publishers, but I still own those books.

When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn鈥檛 get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash refund for the price you paid.

People sometimes treat me like my decision not to sell my books through Amazon鈥檚 Audible is irrational (Audible will not let writers or publisher opt to sell their books without DRM), but if you think Amazon is immune to this kind of shenanigans, you are sadly mistaken. My books matter a lot to me. I just paid $8,000 to have a container full of books shipped from a storage locker in the UK to our home in LA so I can be closer to them. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some kind of fucking software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary works, they could not have done a better job.

If you鈥檝e got an ereader and want to actually own your books, I heartily recommend using cailbre to scrape the DRM off and so you can backup the files.

Seconding calibre as a brilliant tool for ebook management in general.聽

i gotta write a trope break where the dad鈥檚 favorite daughter gets a bf and instead of being suspicious the dad is like聽鈥榊ES. FINALLY. I HAVE A SON TO GO FISHING WITH鈥櫬犫榙ad i go fishing with you every week鈥櫬犫榠 know and i鈥檒l always enjoy fishing with you more but I WANNA MAKE HIM FEEL WELCOME. COME ON SON LET US FISH鈥櫬

instead of cringing the daughter鈥檚 like聽鈥榠鈥檓 sorry if you feel weirded out by my dad but i love him the way he is and u just gotta man up and deal with my awesome cringy dad鈥

boyfriend, who doesn鈥檛 have a good dad: i know this and i love him

bf: are you going to tell me to not break your daughter鈥檚 heart or you鈥檒l break my legs or something?聽

dad: no i know you wouldn鈥檛 do it on purpose and it鈥檚 stupid to get mad at someone for an accident. also, i trust my daughter鈥檚 taste in men and understand that heartbreak is a natural part of relationships. you will both hurt each other, but what鈥檚 important is being mature, forgiving, and loving through it. now, do you want a hamburger or a hotdog?

bf, crying a little: both, please mr. dad

instead of groaning at the dad jokes everyone is DELIGHTED and the dad stands as the pinnacle of humor, as dad jokes deserve to.聽
